Got to know a Japanese exchange student, a music major, in college. We talked a lot about music, and one day she asked me if I had some good jazzy music she could listen to. I looked down at the screen, and the album was "Tokimeki Memorial Piano Album 2"...and I deliberated for a moment as it occured to me what effect it might have if I said it was from a dating sim. no, not at all i do like some changes. But a lot of the time the changes just f-it up in my opinion. I like love hina, but the manga is so much better...and it actually ends. Thats the only example i can think of right now, but i have yet to see major changes to an anime from manga that is good. That could be just me of course.
Kare Kano, Cromartie, at least some parts on NHK, off the top of my head. This is of course not counting the many cases of manga based on anime, where the manga is usually significantly worse.

The Nodame Cantabile anime is coming up this winter season. If it's as good as the drama it'll be a must-see.
The Animation Runner Kuromi OVAs also come to mind, although they lean towards exagerrated slapstick.
Are you too lazy to read manga in general? The genre is a lot less popular in animation, so there's a lot more of this type of story in print. For example, Living Game, about a guy in a struggling small company and his eccentric co-workers. The whole story has been scanlated.

This season, there's also a new You're Under Arrest TV anime. Workplace comedy about eccentric traffic cops.
Mahoraba (a series superficially similar to Love Hina) might be worth checking out. It's not wholly realistic but is considerably more down to earth then most comedies of its type. Also has very nice slice-of-life moments.
Character age is questionable though. Some characters are 20, some characters are 16, but all of them look 12.

Inspired by the "What anime really surprised you and why?" thread, I think it's time we fess up and say that that one series we always insult, belittle, or just ignore is actually the one that touched us deep in our heart.
For me the main one that pops into mind is Gravitation. It and couple episodes of Loveless are the only two shōnen-ai animes I've ever seen, but I ended up really liking this to the point that I even read the manga too. I don't even remember why I started watching it, but the drama and dynamics between Shuichi and Eiri kept me hooked. Of course I'll never admit this and have on more than one occasion made fun of Gravitation with my friends, but somewhere deep in my closest is a box with all 12 manga volumes and the anime boxset lovingly packed away.
Hetalia is the other one that I've recently become pretty obsessed with but hide from others. Enough of my friends have seen the anime that I feel comfortable admitting that I like to watch it, but if anyone asks if I've read the web comic I pretend like I don't even know there is a web comic.
So yeah, please share your secret anime loves or better yet, any stories you may have about being caught or something. It'll be cool to read and who knows, you it may even inspire us to watch something we normally would not.

Mysterious romance.
Yuck, the anime laid the cross-eyed style real hard. But ok, it was better later in the episode. Same for the voice actors, it took a while before they went into their role.
The manga was originally a one-shot which turned into a series later, and is still ongoing. The problem is, the manga never explored the questions the one-shot raised, and just tumbled round and round. I dropped the manga at one point when I realized it was limping around.
Should I stop watching this, now that I have seen the "good" one-shot animated? Let's see... 12 episodes planned. Maybe I'll watch a couple more to see how it goes.

Anyway, I could stomach all the blood and death in this first episode, because I didn't care for any of the characters. It was like watching a war game.

First Part was somewhat interesting, Second Part was booooring to death. I wonder if the director swapped the two parts? Doing the Second Part first, when the Voice Actors were still not used to their roles the anime, and doing the First Part second, when the VAs finally got settled into their roles? But the difference is too big... Maybe they recorded the whole 12 episodes, and -then- redid the First Part?
