Leiji Matsumoto - A Fucking Legend (5)

1 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2017-08-12 06:08 ID:zEeFDG2C

It kills my how underrated Leiji Matsumoto is in the west (well, the USA and anglosphere mostly, considering that Harlock is a legend in the francophone sphere, along with shit like Queen Millennia in Germany and shows in Italy).

I can't stand fags who think anime like Cowboy Bebop is ancient, when Matsumoto's space operas from the 70s are fucking great. Galaxy Express 999 was questioning the eternal life that transhumanists want now - deep, disturbing shit that really sticks with you, with tales of the ennui and horror of machine immortality. GE999 TV is amazing shit, and people FFS get over the prejudice against Leiji's "potato head" way of drawing people (his women are beautiful anyways - hello Maetel!).

If they ever carve a Mount Rushmore of anime, it will have Tezuka, Miyazaki, and Matsumoto for sure.

2 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2017-10-02 01:29 ID:r7FvYBvY

I've said similar before. He's one of the classics, which is the very reason they don't know him. Consider that a good amount if not a majority haven't seen ANY series from the 1970s, and these tended to have certain themes that are different from what a modern audience is used to, even if some of them are akin to blueprints for what followed. It feels anachronistic, take for example Gun Frontier, or Endless Odyssey. These while being modern anime still remain old-fashioned. Only a certain type of person is attracted to that, very much the classic otaku.

The potatohead style was mostly a product of the era, when artists were still drawing after a certain comic aesthetic.

I've got a huge backlog of his works, perhaps I'll return and post my thoughts when the time comes.

Let's replace Miyazaki with Nagai.
Anyway, the only Matsumoto show I've seen so far is Space Battleship Yamato, but it's awesome. One of my all-time favorites.

Why is English Dub so annoying? (12)

1 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2016-11-14 17:24 ID:OSYlhpG3

So I rewatched the first episode of Azumanga Daioh english dub for a personal project the other day, and I can't believe my younger self stood this! The voices were annoying and nasal, and the characters used all sorts of weird expressions that didn't sound at all like natural speech. It did have a cheesy sort of charm to it though. But you know that saying, that "once you go black you never go back"? Well, somebody should make a rhyming saying to the same effect about watching subbed.

3 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2016-11-21 19:28 ID:31NCzIQW

It's not the original.

4 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2016-11-26 02:24 ID:5l+opUyC

If it makes you feel better, japanese voice acting for most anime doesn't sound that natural either; it's usually full of animeisms (it's the best word I could think of), exaggerated reactions and the like, for comedic or dramatic purposes. Dubbing makes it more noticeable because

a) You understand the language better, and
b) Dubs usually localise these speech quirks and mannerisms, along with wordplay/language gags and cultural references into something that makes sense for their audience, which can stick out like a sore thumb if there's no sort of cross-cultural equivalent. For example... have you ever seen someone do the 'EHHHHH?!!?!??' that shows up in Azumanga all the time when someone is surprised in real life, or even in a live-action comedy show?

Listening to jap radio shows and watching their news/talk shows is actually pretty eye-opening (or maybe ear-opening)

I don't think so Tim.

12 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2017-11-14 17:44 ID:QF/6G8yl

Dubs are annoying because anime is bad. You just don't realize it, but Miyazaki was right. The Miyazaki dubs are good not because they were done by Disney, but that the Miyazaki movies had good dialogue. Most anime has dialogue that is totally removed from how people actually talk or act. i.e. accidentally touching a girls boob and then screaming and fainting. I get that that is an extreme example, but really the vast majority of anime dialogue suffers from the same problem.

Anime is largely written by people who don't know anything about people. Just reclusive mangaka and otaku, so they can't write good dialogue to save their life. It seems passable in Japanese because when you read subtitles, you are really only understanding the main thoughts that are being conveyed. When it is actually redubbed in your native language, the intricacies become more obvious and you can tell how cringe-worthy the dialogue actually is. It's unsettling in the same way that Comic Sans MS is unsettling: you don't really know why it looks wrong, it just does.

Anime with good dubs like Cowboy Bebop (at least the main characters have a good performance) have dialogue that isn't garbage, so they actually sound natural. You'll notice most dub companies use the same voice actors over and over, so if you don't believe me, what's your reasoning?

Moe is the answer you are looking for. Catering to pedobear otaku is profitable, so anime studios have forsaken the model of broad appeal that gave us stuff like Macross and Cowboy Bebop back in the good old days of the 80s-90s.

It's anything but now. The golden age of cute anime was 2007-2011-ish. Shows like Moetan or Skygirls? There's nothing modern and comparable to that.

All relevant modern animes (think No Game No Life, or Re:zero...) have a loli as a stock character, but there's no single anime purely dedicated to the trope.

All you get is politically correct, C+ cup moeshit.

My Plea To Fansubbers (24)

1 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-08-27 12:48 ID:2ecuSdbR

Please pay more attention to the importance of DVD RAWS.

The industry is currently changing to including more incentives for the Japanese to purchase DVDs, things like uncensoring, bonus episodes, and animation fixes are very commonplace nowadays. In that sense, the tv broadcast is not where the show ends.

Particularly for shows that aren't likely to be licensed, I beg that you release DVD versions, or retimed scripts for the DVD RAWS, and I thank everyone who has done so thus far. Bear in mind that I am not talking about R1 DVD rips, but am referring soley to R2 DVD rips of unlicensed series. This will not negatively impact the industry in anyway that fansubbing already doesn't.

It's time to start changing.

Yes yes. I've heard all this before. Perhaps the next thing you'll say is that they will cease production, throw their toys out of the pram and fuck the hell off back home where they'll take up jobs sweeping streets.

Nopes. I'm going to continue as I was before -- waiting for the first lawsuit, kind of like I "waited" for the Phantom game console. (har.) Unless I'm sorely mistaken, well nigh all anime is produced for the Japanese market first and licensed on the initiative of the importing company. Is the importing company going to care? Yes? No? I say fansubs are an important marketing tool for them. If someone goes to the trouble of producing quality subs for a show, there's a good chance that DVDs pressed of it will sell to the "I has 50 shelf meters of animu" crowd. Not that I actually give two shits for an import company, but what on earth have they done to deserve such frothing at the mouth loyalty?

>>14
The noble fansubber goes to tens of hours of trouble for no tangible gain to make good shit watchable to non-devotees like myself. Reputation, you say? That's ephemeral at best, actionable at worst. I see little difference between downloading fansubs and downloading television series on which the local telly is years behind if it is shown at all.

[Chat] What are you watching and how do you like it? (7)

1 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2016-10-29 18:59 ID:41HDcQw4

This season I'm watching:
- Occultic;Nine
- Flip Flappers
- Keijo
- Shuumatsu no Izetta

Occultic is really fun so far, I like the fast-paced mystery and demon stuff that's going on. Of course, Ryo-tas is a delightful and dumb titty monster beyond belief, but she's cute.
Flip Flappers is great, very well animated and very cute. Papika's an adorable dummy. Pure Illusion and the fight scenes are cool.
Keijo is what it is: a show where women fight with their butts.
I haven't started Izetta yet, but I heard it's quite nice.

So, what are you watching?

2 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2016-11-01 17:09 ID:m7RXF3jv

Admittedly I'm still getting caught up on the classics. I started Cowboy Bebop and it's really great so far. Sorry if you were more interested in talking about things this season.

That's fine. I watched Bebop years ago and, admittedly, the show as a whole never stuck with me. I'm normally not too big on episodic shows unless I'm watching them as they come out. I should give it another go sometime.

I haven't watched a ton of anime but something about the characters and setting is really neat to me. I feel like it stands out against a lot of shows that try to be way brighter I guess? It's hard to explain, maybe I'll be able to articulate a little better once I watch more.

All good selectionn.

Flip Flappers is probably top of the season for me, it's refreshing to see visually loaded, ballsy abstract anime, so out of the line from the usual cookiecutter moeblob. Although the main plot thread could use less obscurity in favor of more sophistication, everything else about this anime is so ridiculously good I can't really fault it.

As for my current watchlist:

Little Witch Academia - we expected Harry Potter anime adaption, and we're getting a really good one. The only fault is that the plot is kind of less than original...

Gi(a)rlish Number - Akira Kogami from Lucky Star got her own slice of life anime, and it's awesome exactly as it sounds.

Some older series I started from my backlog:
