I'm actually not really interested in who your favorite character is, but rather on the reasons that make you like him/her/it so much. So please don't just leave a name, but list the main reasons that motivate your choice (nice looks, cool powers, interesting personnality, lifestory, etc).
If you are hard pressed to chose an all time favorite, you can also cite some of your favorites.
So, to kick off this thread, here's my favorite character:
Reki, from Haibane Renmei: I like her looks, the multiple layers of her personality, and how these layers show up in details of her everyday behavior, making her more "real" (for instance, the fact that she's a smoking teenager). I also related well to her inner struggles, and enjoyed the way her conflict was brought to a closure.
I tend to have a favourite character in every series I read so it's difficult to define just one character which I love above all the other characters. Generally, in guys I like the vulnerable characters and in girls I like tsundere character types.
I guess I'll give a few of mine from different series I have read recently:
Hikaru from ouran high school - I like his insecurities and his jealousy over haruhi. As a fangirl, Hikaru appeals to me greatly because he is in a real struggle over whether to help Tamaki and Haruhi out and whether to be selfish and let it go on without Tamaki realising. The fact that at the moment he seems to be on the verge of sacrificing his own feelings for the sake of Haruhi is something that I really love about him at the moment. Plus he is the character who has developed the most through the series, so I have grown to like him alot.
Madarame from Genshiken - I liked him from the start of the series, but he became my favourite after he began to develop a crush on one of the other characters, because it was an unrequited thing and the expressions he showed and how he acted kind of won me over. He's an unusual favourite, I admit, but he's so awesome I can't help but like him.
Ryuuji and Taiga from Tora dora - unusually, both the main characters have similar personalities to those which I prefer in main characters. Taiga has to be tsundere. If she isn't, I'll jump off a cliff for getting it so wrong. Ryuuji has an appearance that makes him look like a delinquent but he has actually a gentle personality. They both fit my ideals for characters.

Sorry, me again. I realised that almost all of the characters mentioned and the reasons for liking them are linked to the manga version rather than the anime version. So I've listed my four favourite manga characters. >_< sorry!
Shigure Sohma from Fruits Basket. He's fairly reserved most of the time, and has a zen way of looking at everything. He's also capable of sarcasm of downright hilarious levels. He knows when to quit, though. Usually.
Shinji Ikari... from Evangelion...
He is soo believable as a character.
Johann Liebert because he is hitler, satan and THE EPITOME OF EVIL. He is by far one of the most kick-ass characters in a serious anime.
also, lain, because.... obvious, also: >>44
Kino is not beautiful therefore she is one reverse trap with depth
Kanji Sasahara from Genshiken, i can really empathize with his character. I felt kinda like him in the begining of Genshiken never dated, hiding the fact that his an otaku, kinda shy and outspoken, and I even just started college at the time i first watched Genshiken. The only difference i saw was the fact that i really didn't like doujinshi or hentai games.
Those last two things are for perverts anyway who can't date girls
Ryo Saeba from City Hunter.
He's just awesome. Every night is like a party for him. I want Happy Mokkori with girls!!!!!!!!!!
On side note; an anime character that i hate the most is Suzumiya Haruhi. She's one arrogant bitch (in my opinion). And i would love to bitch-slap her.
Yuki Nagato compensates any retarded moments you spent with Haruhi
So guys... do you guys know many femal Otaku?
Do you even date one??
I got a otaku-girlfriend, she also draws doujinshi.
Shes more like a doujin-otaku.
I'm an Anime, Manga & Game Otaku.
What Otaku-types match the most?? i really wonder...
your turn.

I, for one, welcome our chubby overlords.
Perhaps those hated them are self conscious about their own weight
It is sad to see overweight people sometimes...I mean, it's not about it being un-attractive to most people, but also because they are prone to so many horrible diseases and health problems. However it's not totally untrue that they can't be cute or handsome being a little pudgy, but when it gets to be majorly bad, then it's just sad, and really shows alot about how much the person really cares about things.
They should change knowing it reinforces the overweight otaku idea
Weight is an issue even outside the anime community. It's just a shame that the common stereotype has become that of an overweight geek, often wearing glasses, often male etc. But you can't change yourself for an outside reason. You have to want to do it yourself. Which is a pain.
I'm quite socially inept, myself, and I really don't like the thought of walking into a gym amongst all these other superfit people and ask for a gym card. I can just imagine them looking at me, scrutinising me, laughing at me when I can barely run nonstop for five minutes and they've been running for an hour. And I'm not even fat. Just physically unfit. So for someone who is overweight, it must be a lot worse. It's just a case of whether the will to get fit is greater than the fear of being scrutinised. For me, the fear is much greater and I remain at my computer, happily immersing myself in manga. And life is good and safe and not scary. Until I have to answer the telephone.
>>334
You do. You just don't know it yet.
>>341
I'm actually another what? Uninformed moron?
Hmm. Entirely possible, I guess. I mean, until someone corrects you, you don't actually know that you're wrong/uninformed about something. To be honest. If you're not calling me an uninformed moron, awesome. If you are, correct me so I don't make the same uninformed, stupid comment in the future.
Not only ramble but personal details that must need the compliment
>>377
I sense sarcasm.
I was actually trying to make a point.. And I really wasn't giving out that many personal details. Just trying to express my view by using an analogy. Sorry. Won't happen again. ¬_¬
Oh, and for the record, I meant I was rambling in the last bit. I thought my first point was actually quite coherent. Obviously not.
You mean writing down personal insight would have counted rambling
Ok, now why I think this conversation gets nearer and nearer to a flame war? Please stay cool...
How could one take what any complete stranger has wrote seriously?
For example, assuming >>0's favorite was Looney Tunes: That's not an anime, dumbshit. However, it is crippled by lack of a central plot, nonexistant character development, and inability to focus on a single set of characters.
My fave: Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
No protracted arguments in this thread please, just keep it going.
I hate to break the flow, but if 521 is actually true, it's amazing, not a reason something would suck.
I think of it like this. Anime is a responsibility. it's like a better Spiderman. "With great anime, comes great responsability" You can't waist all of your money on just one thing. I love death note and I have 2 wall hangers, my own death note all the mangas and a super rare action figure, but I don't go on about it every wakin moment. Examples of these are like Naruto. I fucking hate naruto, but people who see it are all freakish about it to the point where its annoying. and If you like something they also like and you dont like it as much as them they say your not a fan. Yes you are. I'm controlled. I relate it sometimes the situations im in to animes, but I dont talk about them and flip out all the time about them. I can be a biggest fan, but Controle myself. 'cause if you don't have self controle then you turn out shitty and everybody hates you and you become a steriotypical anime nerd. With great anime comes great resposibility
controle
Nice except you are forgetting proper grammar and the right thread
http://amcflaws.awardspace.com/
Shinigami no Ballad
weak sympathetic magical all-white "deathgod" girl with pointless scythe and a talking helpful black cat. Obvious all-black antagonist. HERE WE GO AGAIN.
Samurai Pizza Cats
Nobody knows if it's good or not... it was never translated!!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samurai_Pizza_Cats#Translation
Hell Teacher Nube
I don't think it's true, mainly because I have never heard of Adobe Potatoshop™.
>I have never heard of Adobe Potatoshop™
LOLWHUT??!!
I've seen Boogiepop, Lain, Paranoia Agent, NHK, NieA_7, Haibane, BLAME!, Ergo Proxy, Koi Kaze, GITS, Mushishi, various Makoto Shinkai works, Texhnolyze, Ray The Animation, and a few others/various OVA I can't recall. Basically, I'm into more..."intelligent" anime. And I know that sounds really fucking pretentious, but I couldn't think of a better word.
Now, I've been hunting high and low for series that share similar themes (that are which is primarily philosophical to some extent, or touching onto more mature themes rather than shōnen style anime.
This isn't exactly a 'halp me find new anime' thread, as I know there are a lot of those. Rather, it's a question of have I simply watched all anime that exists for, say, people over 18?
Cream Lemon
FLCL.....
Kanashimi no Belladonna
Amazing Nuts! and Alien 9. Have some Superflat anime.
Also, anything by Makoto Shinkai.
Eve no Jikan
>>102
God no. Shinkai's stuff is great and all, but 5cm depressed me so much.
Love can only be so pure in anime form!
Cencoroll
>Have some Superflat anime
YESSS!!!
Ushiro no Shomen Dare
who agrees that flcl kicks ass! its frekin awsome.
wait what?
You could remember having seen something that was more unexpected
NOBODY UNDERSTANDS HARUKO LIKE I DO!!!
Nobody understood what substance abuse was done writing the manga
Music videos may have worked best than whatever story they wanted
i think without the plot and the words (like with interstella) the whole point of the coming of age would be lost and would be more of a focus on haruko and action sequences.
Those have been done enough in better anime making the loss small
Yeah? Well your ass has been done in enough, making your penis small at the sight of women.
Whatever they wanted with that plot was wasted with terrible ideas
Did anyone hear of a Densha Otoko Anime being created? -Thanks!
What else do we expect with story taking visual cues from the BBS?
Huge tits.
Yum.
You have even better drawn nipples watching something like Kanokon
>>39
I dunno, Chizuru's nipples actually look a bit weird.
They care not over such small matters like normal body proportion
Does that mean they must be giants?
I read the manga yesterday. I like it.
They were drawn enough to appeal the average otaku attention span
Lord help me, this show, I love it so. The characters are likeable, the Neuroi designs are cool, and the friendships have a bit of an Azumanga-ish feel to them. Still, I have to ask myself if the fanservice isn't going too far. Although the official same-day streaming sub is nice.
Gonzo may not be winning any awards but their output CAN be decent
Yeah, I don't get all the Gonzo hate...I've watched two shows by them (Blue Sub no. 6 and currently Strike Witches), and loved both of them. Plus they're the most internationally minded Japanese anime studio, what with their BOST ventures in the English-speaking world, and the Singapore stuff, and Witchblade/Afro Samurai.
>>44
Gonzo hate springs from initial great potential and sky high hopes being regularly dashed to pieces over the course of a series. Strike Witches is holding up well so far.
Did Gonzo also do Sky Girls? I have to wonder what is making SW so much more popular. The detailed historical references? The writing and characterization? Uniforms designed for pantyshots?
hm....I wish I got more infos on those..hm...
>Did Gonzo also do Sky Girls?
No, that was JC Staff.
>The detailed historical references? The writing and characterization? Uniforms designed for pantyshots?
All three. Also, the realistic airplane sounds+machinegun fire sounds appeal to one's boyish warlust (that fight scene at the beginning of ep 1 was SWEET).
Gate Keepers 21 does much better than watching the original series
There is no way they could compare other than having the same name
Gate Keepers and Gate Keepers 21 are the exact same thing, which is a combined parody and homage. It's just that the source material and perspective are different.
They're both pretty brilliant, and the way they contrast and complement each other is even better.
Gate Keepers 21 did the same story better without dumb anime humor
ITT, we lay our otaku minds bare and list one hundred things which are moe! It's OK to fail, but remember, you should be aiming for the full hundred! If you run out of steam, feel free to continue in a later post! Here we go!
Catgirls * Maids * Tsundere * Meganekko * Miko * Nurses * Younger sisters who say "nii-san" * Younger sisters who say "onii-sama" * Princesses * Witches * Elves * Space Elves * Sylphs * Undines * Goddesses * Girls who read * Outcast girls * Hikikomori girls * Girls with scars * Girls who climb trees * Girls sleeping in a chair * Girls who wear men's shirts * Girls who are so plain they're invisible * Girls who aren't catgirls but act like cats anyway * Girls who come up to your window on a summer night * Girls with knives * Girls who speak very formally * Long skirts * Uniforms * Naked apron * Noto Mamiko * Chinami Nishimura * Chiyako Shibahara
Turns out I could only manage 33, but I'm sure some of you out there can do better. Feel free to copy from previous people's lists, but it has to be a list of things you, personally, think is moe!
I faint's reading on this thread!
I faints reading on this thread!
Notice my example was Shion rather than some Ichigo Mashimaro meme
>>71
Ahem! pokes
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hidamari_Sketch
Tried reading that but the puns are not translated well in English
lol
Also the character designs were painful but nowhere like usual moe
an attempt to create a new style I suppose??
Those are created knowing readers could be split into two extremes
Tell me your favorite cool looking anime girl here!
Yuki Nagato
Yuki for me too.
Enough of these shitty threads. There are several already, and they're all incredibly boring.
Make threads where people can actually TALK, and not just make long lists of names.
Yuki Nagato!!!
Having recently got tired of anime series such as, naruto, black cat, bleach etc (Shōnen anime). I've tried some Shōjo anime series and loved it. What romance anime series would you recommend? I've only watched: Kanon, Chobits and utawarerumono so far.
accidentally double posted due to my stupid internet speed! sighs....
You are right maybe that should have said it is a harem soap opera
Sentimental Journey is much better among the other dating sim kind
Here is >>7
I am now up to date on Itazura na Kiss and I think it's really wonderful. Best anime I have seen m.3.3.w. do. I will start watching Special A later.
Clannad [Fourthed]
Da Capo is completely romance, especially the first season
EF: A Tale of Memories [seconded]
