This thread is for discussion of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, easily the best show of the season, if not the year!

Strange ass anime. Did you notice that some of the episodes seem out of order?

8 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-05-07 12:33 ID:2/nYCDkn

They don't "seem" out of order, they are out of order.

Watch the previews!

I did watch the previews. That's why I said they seemed out of order. If I didn't see the previews, I would've blamed the subber.

Some group calling itself "Animanda" has started subbing the show too, but apparently they're just a bunch of idiots whose only claim for the value of their translation is that it's higher res than a.f.k.'s. I didn't check to make sure, but I'm fairly certain their translation is nowhere near the same quality, especially after having spoken to them on IRC.

Avoid.

I'm basing it on the fact that a.f.k.'s translation is one of the very best fan translations I've seen in years, and I highly doubt some random warez-scene group is going to beat that, especially after having talked to them about it and found out that the thing they think is most important about their release is the high resolution.

27 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-05-20 14:22 ID:2/nYCDkn

Sigh. I tried posting on the sos-dan.com forums, but man, that sure was a waste of time. It's the worst kind of inane phpBB-style forum.

Let's get some discussion going in here instead! About issues such as:

  • Does the manga just plain suck, or is it just the translation that's bad? (http://shana.imouto.org/asdf/%5Bk-e%5Dsuzumiya_v01_ch001.rar, http://s9.invisionfree.com/KawaruEnishi/)
  • The out-of-order storytelling seems to be doing quite a complex dance around the climax of the first storyline - first we get confused flashbacks to this event, and "closed space", and now we get an episode that takes place in something that is "like" closed space, but isn't really. It's obviously using the later episodes to build up tension for the events that would otherwise chronlogically preceed it. Clever!
  • Episode 7 has a lot of references. There are the obvious "Fumoffu" and "Second Raid" ones, referring to FMP series that Kyoto Animation produced, but there's also the book shelf that has a bunch of hilarious stuff like "Dentaku Otoko" ("Calculator Man"), "Emmangelivion", and also "The NEET Revolution". Anybody get the other references in there? Like "Ashita e PIN-PON DASH" or the Disappearance Diary thing?

>>24

There's the fact that the put SOS Group in Ep 1 and SOS Brigade in EP 2. Then the fact that they basically copied a.f.k.'s translation "Save the world by overloading it with fun" except they put "our world" instead of "the world." Then the fact that they make so many tense errors in episode 2 that the meaning of what's being said is lost.

The manga was cancelled after the first volume, wasn't it? I read somewhere that the novel author didn't have much involvement with it.

31 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-05-21 03:43 ID:9cPcqaMk

There are two manga adaptions. >>27 refers to the better one.

> or is it just the translation that's bad?

It seems accurate enough, but some of the dialogue sounds unnatural and disjointed. They need good proofreaders.

>"Ashita e PIN-PON DASH"

33 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-05-21 11:19 ID:2/nYCDkn

>>31

It's not proofreading, they need a translator with who has some facility with the English language. The actual translating is only half the work - you need to be able to write fluent and natural prose in English too, and this translation kind of fails that.

(It's definitely not alone in this, though.)

In episode 8 Haruhi quoted "Elementary, my dear Watson" line from Sherlock Holms series.

And I really need to try reading Hyperion now.

55 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-05-31 11:55 ID:elGtosmU

So, how about the signficance of episode 9?

By all reports, the show will be 14 episode, and that was the 14th episode. If the producers are really planning on airing all the intervening episodes (which might be a bit of a risk assumption), they're essentially saying they won't make a big climax to the story to end it. The final episode might be a climax of some sort, but it will be set earlier in the story.

There were also reference to a sequel to the movie from the first episode. So, speculation: Are we being told there will be a second season? Or will the producers do something even more strange?

Overall, lot of people seem to have though the episode was boring, but I enjoyed it, because I got the joke that the producers were once again messing with the viewers, just like in the first episode.

58 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-06-15 17:42 ID:bdkmHOGZ

I must say the episode 11 is one of the best anime episode in the past few years. Not to mention the massive of palodies, Ravel's, Shostakovich's, and espicially Tchaikovsky's symphonies are inserted in PERFECT timing. Seeing Nagato's emotional cues is also wonderful. Simply great.

59 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-06-16 03:07 ID:T2M2Enyt

I really love that episode, especially the part where Haruhi wants a gundam rx-78!

60 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-06-16 12:14 ID:elGtosmU

Yuki's "Permission?" scene was a real masterpiece of directing.

It's also worth noting that the episode is nothing but filler and totally predictable, but it's still utterly awesome.

A fan read out the source code seen in Nagato's typing scene, and compiled it.

http://blog.proj.jp/ituki/data/2006/20060615.SimInject.cc (minor fix)

compiled file
http://blog.proj.jp/ituki/data/2006/20060615.SimInject.exe

Wow... It worked...

63 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-06-17 10:14 ID:bdkmHOGZ

Yes it is filler, but there is one very important scene in this episode. I mean...

We witnessed the historical moment when a machine(humanoid interface) gained "emotion"!
She couldn't express it clearly yet, but Kyon could sense it.

For some reason, this reminds me of the scene when Rachel finds out that she doesn't have true emotinos.

64 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-06-17 12:15 ID:Heaven

>>62

Well, I've been impressed with the handling of computer stuff in the series up until now, but that's pretty impressive.

However, that source code is obviously from a half-finished version of Nagato's hack: She's only scanning for the correct process to inject code in, and the scanning doesn't seem to be complete either. The hack code itself is not there yet!

65 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-06-17 13:07 ID:Heaven

>>62
What does it do? Too lazy to read the code, and as a programmer, I'm not just going to download a random exe since someone says it's based off of a cartoon. :p

66 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-06-17 16:52 ID:Heaven

>>65

If the exe is really just the compiled version of the code, it'll pop up a message box, then scan through some system internals, and do nothing (except print some debug data, which was apparently added by the person who copied the source from the anime).

67 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-06-21 01:36 ID:2/nYCDkn

Wow. Episode 12 features what is probably the first ever reference by an anime show to Rosencrantz and Guildestern are Dead.

That is mighty impressive, as is the fact that the translator caught the reference and got the lines out of the script.

According to some infomation sites, it seems episode 12 was done by 21 genga-men (key animators). That's quite exceptional. I've rarely heard any TV anime episode that more than 20 key animators involved in. Haruhi's live performance may possibly be one of the most money consuming scene in TV anime history.

I've found that this show is best if you don't expect humor. It seems to me, as it progresses, it become more art than humor, especially in "Some Day in the Rain."

Also, the light novels are great.

Having watched the a.f.k. fansub of the whole 14-part series, I'm a little conflicted as to whether I'd like to see another season. Certainly anything of this quality would deserve a continuation, yet I imagine I'd be quite content closing the book and putting it back to its place on the shelf. After all, with indefinitely many seasons after the first it only turns into a waiting game to see how long it takes for yet another furiously good thing to turn into suck.

Them metaphysical themes though? Win!

Sure. That doesn't guarantee nonsuckitude of future seasons though, if there are going to be any -- we all surely know how many ways there are to fuck up a good thing. This is not to say that I wouldn't totally geek out on the second season were it produced and fansubbed as well as the first.

Really, my point was that the first season was plenty complete by itself, regardless of where the manga (which I've completely ignored) goes. It had a beginning, an end and a bunch of non-arc episodes. Maybe I'm just conflicted here given the expectations that the first season would put on a second.

147 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-08-25 15:03 ID:elGtosmU

>>146

Not a manga, a light novel series. And remember, the climax of the first anime season happens right in the middle, chronologically - the pacing of the books work out that way.

an ecchi harem comedy with a complicated (and sort of irrelevant, from the way it ended up) sci-fi premise. it spends far more time with the moemoe stuff than the sci-fi stuff, though, so i would say that's the dominant genre.

People idolize over Haruhi Suzymiya because she acts like a guy. You ever wish you could have a girl as a friend, just to hang out with like one of the guys? A girl that would have the same interests as you, the same enthusiasm, the same keen observations and sense of adventure? How about a girlfriend that you could just hang out with, have fun with, and not have to listen to her whine and complain and leak. Haruhi Suzymiya is that ideal "hang out with" girl. She has fans because she has all the best traits of a guy friend you can hang out with, only she happens to be a girl. Understand that when people idolize over Haruhi Suzymiya, they idolize over the personality of a cool guy friend in a girl's body- an ideal friend/partner who has the best of both worlds, and would be nearly impossible to find.

Haruhi (Aya Hirano), Mikuru (Yuko Goto), and Yuki (Chihara Minori) are coming to Anime Expo 2007 in Long Beach, California, USA.

I am going to cry with happiness (because I get to go see them).

I am so cosplaying as Yuki Nagato for the concert =D

...Words cannot describe the loud screech of happiness I let out when I saw the announcement on ANN.

Someone had better film that for those of us whose expos usually attract Crispin Freeman instead of any worthwhile guests.

www.anime-expo.org might post a video after the con taken by the official staff, but I'm pretty sure filming and recording isn't allowed unless you're the press or something.

Of course, some fan somewhere will sneak a camera in and post it on YouTube I'm sure =P

They're dancing the Hare Hare Yukai dance at the concert =D
I hope the audience all stands up and dances in place... I really want to dance the HHY XD

Today the official "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" DVD LE and Regular Edition Vol. 1 releases in the USA.

I'm not worried about that right now.

No, what concerns me is that I wasn't able to buy Rozen Maiden vol.1 at ACen.

NOT AS PLANNED. DX

Ahhh... Well.

SOS Concert was a disaster. Singing was awesome, but whoever wrote the script for the bits in between the singing didn't do a very good job. Read pretty much any Anime Expo forum topic on the SOS Brigade concert. Concert also started about 2:30 hours late (I was there 1 hour early, 3:30 hours in the sun o_o). They were still filing people in when it started. Techinical difficulties ran rampant.

...The worst thing though?

The timing between what the singer hears and is singing to, and what the audience hears wasn't exact. It was especially obvious when Aya Hirano sings, because she's got such a strong voice. Everyone was singing just a bit slower than what we were hearing, and it drove me nuts.
And everyone in the balcony section (well, my section at least) was a total party pooper, and they just kinda stared at me while I did the Hare Hare Yukai dance. Come on, the freaking translator invited us all to stand and dance >_<

...The autograph session for the SOS. HOO BOY. I waited 7+ hours for nothing. First, AX canceled the session the first day, at about 10:30 AM. 3 hours wasted. Then, AX announced 15 MINUTES AFTER the signing was supposed to start that the SOS Brigade would only be signing posters, and then only 100 of them. Needless to say, I wasn't in the 100. Another 4 hours wasted.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8orMfTGvvns

This video was taken at the line... I'm kinda down in the corner by the person with the red shirt on.

Yeah. If you read pretty much any AX forum topic (especially comments and suggestions) you'll know AX kinda sucked compared to last year.

Okay. Well, now to get that fangirl drive back. Tomorrow's the second season of Haruhi <3
Can't wait =3

198 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2007-07-07 00:03 ID:96xGUYti

Wait a minute.. Are you sure they're not just gonna announce the date of Season 2 tomorrow/(time difference)today? You'd think they wouldn't start airing the sequel to an immensely popular show like that without at least deploying a trailer. I can hardly find any publicity about it at all on google.

199 Name: Flaming Eternity : 2007-07-07 04:21 ID:Wq8UQsNG

O damn!!! U are right! I just re read it! :(( Un-fair! lol. I had a feeling there was something up with that! >:P It does say that the new season will be announced tomorrow. :/ Here is the report. -Second Haruhi Season to be Announced
Posters on the Japanese 2ch board report that the August issue (officially on sale July 10) of Japan's Newtype magazine has revealed the second season of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. The reported coverage of the magazine indicates that the science fiction comedy anime's continuation will be announced on July 7 (07/07/07). Source: Ultimatum-

Site will be updated 9pm japan time.

201 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2007-07-07 12:54 ID:qmV+bm5x

The site is timing out now. Does that mean it's true and half the world are flooding to see it?

202 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2007-07-07 15:15 ID:COP1wCok

Yup... there's one long line to get into that site.

I mean, it was a good show. I really enjoyed it. But does it really need THIS much hype? Kind of ironic, since I tend to look at the show as a kind of self-parody, like Lucky Star.

But I guess when you've got 100+ people dancing the HareHareYukai in Akiba, hype is to be expected.

203 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2007-07-07 15:31 ID:COP1wCok

But... when marketers start cosplaying to pander to fans, like on that website...

shudder

I dunno, I get this uneasy feeling... I guess that's limited to the American market thankfully.

204 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2007-07-09 06:30 ID:qmV+bm5x

Doesn't seem like the site was updated. But then again the magazine hasn't officially gone on sale yet.

205 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2007-07-10 06:52 ID:qmV+bm5x

http://haruhiism.com has the video. But looking at its records the DNS is hosted at Dreamhost so it could easily still be fake. I'm yet to see any solid proof of this whole thing, so I'm flipping between the possibility of it being ingenious viral marketing by the real companies involved, and the possibility of it being a huge conspiracy by vippers with too much time on their hands.

Yutaka Yamamoto is a genius animator who was responsible for most of the greatness of Haruhi 1st season. He had been a staff of Kyoto Animation, but he was fired after he directed only a few episode of Lucky Star. The reason is not clear to this day, but it is rumored that he had a disagreement with KyoAni staff, or he criticized them. The Haruhi 2nd season project had been started at that time. Thus, the project of Haruhi 2nd season took a hiatus.

Last year, KyoAni announced that they quit the production of 2nd season, and they started "New" Haruhi anime project. I think this means KyoAni decided to make new Haruhi without Yamamoto. But honestly, the one who can make the new Haruhi better than the 1st season is only Yamamoto. Maybe KyoAni realized the fact and can do nothing about it now.

266 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2008-05-05 12:07 ID:Heaven

Yamamoto .. Yamamoto .. YamaYamaYamamotomotomoto.

But seriously, I liked the chocolate cornet scene. That and the adjoined discussion on how to properly eat other kinds of food was probably the highlight of Lucky Star, unless you count Minorun-run.

Really? Awesome.
I heard from a number of people that it was cancelled, so false information, I guess.

And I also liked the chocolate cornet scene. It was so pointless a conversation I found it funny.

268 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2008-05-06 13:26 ID:HojzlDeh

Seriously you people all say it's pointless, but within a week of that episode, I found myself buying a chocolate cornet, and the advice helped me decide which end to eat it from. I am deeply grateful to Lucky Star for this.

269 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2008-05-06 13:35 ID:bDczAYdD

I just thought that scene was just too drawn out, it just felt like they attempted to make it like the "Royale" conversation in Pulp Fiction but didn't pull off, but that's me. But enough of Lucky Star.
I had doubts they were going to cancel Haruhi season 2, after how popular it was and still is it would be stupid to not do another season.

> Yamamoto was fired because the first 4 episodes of Lucky Star were boring.

A horrible and amateurish misinformation with absolutely no clue. Fall 08 is also highly unlikely, considering that Kyoani is going to do Clannad 2nd season this fall.

Anyway, it seems the production of the NEW (not 2nd) season has finally started.
http://www.haruhi.tv/fanclub/index.html
The announcement tells the "Surrogate Brigade Leader" is Ishihara Tatsuya (the director of Kannon, Lucky Star, Clannad),
and the "Assistant Brigade Leader" is Takemoto Yasuhiro (of Full Metal Panic series).
This is a kind of dream staff, which is the tag-team of two major Kyoani directors. Kyoani might know that they need to go all out to fill the gap of Yamakan.

And the picture of emotional Nagato may be a reference to The disappearance of HS.

Did you watch it in broadcast order or chronological order?
If in broad cast order, then you need to bear with it because it jumps back and forth through time so it gets confusing. (Though you HAVE to watch it in broadcast order the first time, otherwise the effect is lost.)
If you watched it chronological, then what is wrong with you?? How could you not like it?

"...has since been licensed for release in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Mainland China by Kadokawa Media, in South Korea by Daiwon CI, and in the United States by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers and Yen Press." [emphasis mine]

Per the above articles, it's a joint venture between Little, Brown Books and Yen Press. The first volume is due next April.

They better make their books bigger than the Strawberry Panic ones

298 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2008-08-07 12:42 ID:Heaven

>>296 Now it appears to have been updated. When I posted that earlier, there was no little american flag on the box at all.

>>297 Light novels are supposed to be tiny.

They are best when they keep the same size Kino and Boogiepop have

>>298
I hate to break it to you, but the article history shows that both the flag icon and the above quoted passage have been in the article since 17 April (the date of the linked ANN article). In fact, the current revision of the article dates to 2 Aug. - the day before your post >>291, so it hasn't been updated.

It's not the end of the world to admit you missed something. We all do it from time to time.

See, case in point: I put sage in the name field by accident. We all miss things.

Even Andrew Cunningham admits to have mistranslated certain things

>>303
I suppose that's likely. Even here, the text at the article head notes that an English version will be forthcoming, but not who will be publishing it (though one could glean it from the footnote), and there is no flag icon in any of the info boxes (and that's important if you get linked to an anchor part-way down the page). Somebody was very lazy when they updated the article (nothing less from people maintaining a "list of" page).

<rant>I'm getting really sick of the proliferation of "list of" pages. It's just an excuse to not make the effort to write a proper article, and especially annoying when there's already an article for the subject in question. There's absolutely no reason why that information couldn't be merged into the other article on the light novels. In fact, it should be, but I can almost guarantee that a vote on the issue would keep the pages as they are. Once upon a time, there was supposed to be a policy (or at least a style guideline) against "list of" pages, but now there is a "list of Wikipedia policies and guidlines" page, FFS. Shit like this is why I stopped editing Wikipedia - it's a losing battle.</rant>

They will never let anime have episode articles while sitcoms does

Consistency is not exactly Wikipedia's strong point. Then again, I'm not sure that Wikipedia has a strong point.

307 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2008-08-09 01:42 ID:KvKJ/71a

Neither is citation unless they are willing to dedicate the source

308 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2008-08-09 12:16 ID:Heaven

Wikipedia's strong point is the price you have to pay to access it.

ni paa~

309 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2008-08-09 21:42 ID:KvKJ/71a

Their only merit is when they manage to be more reliable than imdb

310 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2008-08-10 04:10 ID:Heaven

>>308
Which is still more than it's worth.

>>309
That's not a hard feat.

311 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2008-08-10 05:48 ID:KvKJ/71a

Which turns back to the point that their relevance lacks any value

312 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2008-08-10 21:45 ID:Heaven

>>311
And yet so many people not only trust it, but depend on it.

313 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2008-08-31 10:19 ID:Heaven

Well it's at least as accurate as any other encyclopedia anyway.

The key thing is that if someone goes in and finds something which is wrong and doesn't fix it, then it's that person who sucks, not Wikipedia.

Yeah, I watched it in the fucked-up broadcast order first time, but after watching in chronological order I decided that the broadcast order made it much more interesting. Because otherwise the really interesting stuff all happens in the first half of the series.

Big question: Would Haruhi have been so popular if it had been broadcast in chronological order? (Although Haruhi is still an awesome character, whatever order:)

315 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2008-10-03 16:36 ID:NNY9VbaG

Haruhi may have been overrated no matter the order you watch those

316 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2008-10-04 06:31 ID:Heaven

>>315
"More people like X show" != "X show is overrated"

317 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2008-10-04 20:45 ID:NNY9VbaG

Show did not live up to potential nor praise thus became overrated

318 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2008-10-05 15:45 ID:Heaven

>>317 I dunno, I thought they did a reasonable job with the source material, except for leaving some holes in there (intentionally? maybe. Rhapsody does fit better alongside Disappearance...)

Love it.

Lent the dvds to a friend, he fell in love with the series, I don't think I'll be getting the dvds back anytime soon, lol.
He's been begging me to trade him the dvds as well as offering rides to school for next year to sweeten the deal. It's tempting but I don't know if I want to part with my Haruhi dvds. ^^;;;

320 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2008-10-06 18:07 ID:NNY9VbaG

You could part with them since the box set is less than $50 around

Or not. Re-runs of the first season in April, apparently. Here's hoping that they're doing so as a run-up to season two in the summer.

Luckily for you, it has. But it's a good ending.

345 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2009-08-08 07:14 ID:Z7m86Zwn

IT'S FINAL-FUCKING-LY DONE! Geez, sitting through 8 episodes of the same god damn thing over and over again sure was hell, but once that ending came it felt like a giant weight was lifted off your shoulders. We're free of the horrid Endless Eight arc! Hurray! Rejoice!

Also, it's awesome that I guessed right. I knew homework was the answer! Glad I didn't let any of the other subtle hints - like that aeroplane - deviate me from my originally correct assumption. Ego +1.
