This thread is for discussion of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, easily the best show of the season, if not the year!

Strange ass anime. Did you notice that some of the episodes seem out of order?

8 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-05-07 12:33 ID:2/nYCDkn

They don't "seem" out of order, they are out of order.

Watch the previews!

I did watch the previews. That's why I said they seemed out of order. If I didn't see the previews, I would've blamed the subber.

Some group calling itself "Animanda" has started subbing the show too, but apparently they're just a bunch of idiots whose only claim for the value of their translation is that it's higher res than a.f.k.'s. I didn't check to make sure, but I'm fairly certain their translation is nowhere near the same quality, especially after having spoken to them on IRC.

Avoid.

I'm basing it on the fact that a.f.k.'s translation is one of the very best fan translations I've seen in years, and I highly doubt some random warez-scene group is going to beat that, especially after having talked to them about it and found out that the thing they think is most important about their release is the high resolution.

27 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-05-20 14:22 ID:2/nYCDkn

Sigh. I tried posting on the sos-dan.com forums, but man, that sure was a waste of time. It's the worst kind of inane phpBB-style forum.

Let's get some discussion going in here instead! About issues such as:

  • Does the manga just plain suck, or is it just the translation that's bad? (http://shana.imouto.org/asdf/%5Bk-e%5Dsuzumiya_v01_ch001.rar, http://s9.invisionfree.com/KawaruEnishi/)
  • The out-of-order storytelling seems to be doing quite a complex dance around the climax of the first storyline - first we get confused flashbacks to this event, and "closed space", and now we get an episode that takes place in something that is "like" closed space, but isn't really. It's obviously using the later episodes to build up tension for the events that would otherwise chronlogically preceed it. Clever!
  • Episode 7 has a lot of references. There are the obvious "Fumoffu" and "Second Raid" ones, referring to FMP series that Kyoto Animation produced, but there's also the book shelf that has a bunch of hilarious stuff like "Dentaku Otoko" ("Calculator Man"), "Emmangelivion", and also "The NEET Revolution". Anybody get the other references in there? Like "Ashita e PIN-PON DASH" or the Disappearance Diary thing?

>>24

There's the fact that the put SOS Group in Ep 1 and SOS Brigade in EP 2. Then the fact that they basically copied a.f.k.'s translation "Save the world by overloading it with fun" except they put "our world" instead of "the world." Then the fact that they make so many tense errors in episode 2 that the meaning of what's being said is lost.

The manga was cancelled after the first volume, wasn't it? I read somewhere that the novel author didn't have much involvement with it.

31 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-05-21 03:43 ID:9cPcqaMk

There are two manga adaptions. >>27 refers to the better one.

> or is it just the translation that's bad?

It seems accurate enough, but some of the dialogue sounds unnatural and disjointed. They need good proofreaders.

>"Ashita e PIN-PON DASH"

33 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-05-21 11:19 ID:2/nYCDkn

>>31

It's not proofreading, they need a translator with who has some facility with the English language. The actual translating is only half the work - you need to be able to write fluent and natural prose in English too, and this translation kind of fails that.

(It's definitely not alone in this, though.)

In episode 8 Haruhi quoted "Elementary, my dear Watson" line from Sherlock Holms series.

And I really need to try reading Hyperion now.

55 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-05-31 11:55 ID:elGtosmU

So, how about the signficance of episode 9?

By all reports, the show will be 14 episode, and that was the 14th episode. If the producers are really planning on airing all the intervening episodes (which might be a bit of a risk assumption), they're essentially saying they won't make a big climax to the story to end it. The final episode might be a climax of some sort, but it will be set earlier in the story.

There were also reference to a sequel to the movie from the first episode. So, speculation: Are we being told there will be a second season? Or will the producers do something even more strange?

Overall, lot of people seem to have though the episode was boring, but I enjoyed it, because I got the joke that the producers were once again messing with the viewers, just like in the first episode.

58 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-06-15 17:42 ID:bdkmHOGZ

I must say the episode 11 is one of the best anime episode in the past few years. Not to mention the massive of palodies, Ravel's, Shostakovich's, and espicially Tchaikovsky's symphonies are inserted in PERFECT timing. Seeing Nagato's emotional cues is also wonderful. Simply great.

59 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-06-16 03:07 ID:T2M2Enyt

I really love that episode, especially the part where Haruhi wants a gundam rx-78!

60 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-06-16 12:14 ID:elGtosmU

Yuki's "Permission?" scene was a real masterpiece of directing.

It's also worth noting that the episode is nothing but filler and totally predictable, but it's still utterly awesome.

A fan read out the source code seen in Nagato's typing scene, and compiled it.

http://blog.proj.jp/ituki/data/2006/20060615.SimInject.cc (minor fix)

compiled file
http://blog.proj.jp/ituki/data/2006/20060615.SimInject.exe

Wow... It worked...

63 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-06-17 10:14 ID:bdkmHOGZ

Yes it is filler, but there is one very important scene in this episode. I mean...

We witnessed the historical moment when a machine(humanoid interface) gained "emotion"!
She couldn't express it clearly yet, but Kyon could sense it.

For some reason, this reminds me of the scene when Rachel finds out that she doesn't have true emotinos.

64 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-06-17 12:15 ID:Heaven

>>62

Well, I've been impressed with the handling of computer stuff in the series up until now, but that's pretty impressive.

However, that source code is obviously from a half-finished version of Nagato's hack: She's only scanning for the correct process to inject code in, and the scanning doesn't seem to be complete either. The hack code itself is not there yet!

65 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-06-17 13:07 ID:Heaven

>>62
What does it do? Too lazy to read the code, and as a programmer, I'm not just going to download a random exe since someone says it's based off of a cartoon. :p

66 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-06-17 16:52 ID:Heaven

>>65

If the exe is really just the compiled version of the code, it'll pop up a message box, then scan through some system internals, and do nothing (except print some debug data, which was apparently added by the person who copied the source from the anime).

67 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2006-06-21 01:36 ID:2/nYCDkn

Wow. Episode 12 features what is probably the first ever reference by an anime show to Rosencrantz and Guildestern are Dead.

That is mighty impressive, as is the fact that the translator caught the reference and got the lines out of the script.

According to some infomation sites, it seems episode 12 was done by 21 genga-men (key animators). That's quite exceptional. I've rarely heard any TV anime episode that more than 20 key animators involved in. Haruhi's live performance may possibly be one of the most money consuming scene in TV anime history.

>>88 but that scene really did a good job of outdoing the infamous Rei and Asuka standing in an elevator with nothing happening scene from Eva.

You watched that far, and you still can't tell that the producers like to mess with the viewers?

The information quantity of that episode is pretty larg,e but I think most of them are mere junk info for non-Japanese.

I've found that this show is best if you don't expect humor. It seems to me, as it progresses, it become more art than humor, especially in "Some Day in the Rain."

Also, the light novels are great.
