Post what you consider as classics of Japanese animation produced in the 80's and 90's.

Mobile suit gundam , it's 0079(1979 :P) so almost 80's
And the MSG OYW(one year war) ova's like 08th ms team,0083. And zeta.
Ghost in the shell is also a classic , the movie not SAC.
And Random Anime Otaku now i have to watch Cowboy Bebop because of you , its just the best anime i have watched.

I don't think Cowboy Bebop should be categorized with those kind of typical Shonen Jump-series. And what do you mean with "emotional" animes?

as for that comment about CB - i disagree. bleach is a typical shonen jump show. this would include titles along the lines of naruto, hikaru no go (good), ippo ( i think), etc. now bleach compared to say hng or ippo is trash. but you'd be crazy to compare bleach to a show like bebop. bebop never really redefined a genre - but was quite enjoyable. it was executed very well. both bebop and champloo were amazing in all aspects (animation, music, voice work, etc)

I agree that we should try to keep this thread about lists of significant anime rather than discussions of particular anime.
Having said that, I feel compelled to point out that Cowboy Bebop didn't redefine a genre, but it just might have redefined anime. In every way, from voice acting to original music to artistic standards, it raised the bar and raised people's expectations. In fact I think it is the one that impressed me the most of all the anime I've ever seen. It doesn't have Neon Genesis Evangelion's deeply explored complex characters and complex plot, but otherwise it's as near to a perfect achievement as I've ever seen in a television series, animated or not, Japanese or not.
A lot of other, more recent anime that a lot more people rave about haven't been nearly so significant. Like Full Metal Alchemist. Yeah, the art and animation are beautiful, and the fantasy steampunk world background is cool, but the characters annoy me and the writing feels like it's just generic shonen. Naruto doesn't even have FMA's beautiful visuals going for it, it's just more of the same generic shonen adventure stuff that we've been seeing again and again for thirty years.

Plot Summary: It's the summer of 1945. 3 years have elapsed since the war between Japan and USA began. Gen is a young boy living a struggling yet satisfying life in the city of Hiroshima, that has been strangely spared by the bombing taken in almost every other Japanese City. Food is scarce, and Gen's family is suffering from severe malnutrition, which endangeres his pregnant mother. There isn't much spare time as Gen and his little brother Shinji help their father and mother at work and try to make sure their family survives the tought times. Little do they know, what the Americans have in store for the city of Hiroshima and as of the 6th of August 1945, their lives are about to change dramatically.
