OK we here at 4-ch need to start a movement to rescue the word wotaku. there are far tommany people using it. we need to create some way to findout if the person is a true fan or a poser. I dont use the word myself but I think It should be a pride word. the problem Is there are many small fans who try to assosiate with us when there is no reasont to. It makes finding other hardcore anime fans difficult.

I don't necessarily agree that taking the word back would be a good solution or even possible for that matter. Bringing the culture into the mainstream destroyed alot of what it means to be an otaku. I mean, did any of you older than 16 believe way back when that good(well sorta)anime would be shown on tv every night and that everyday weekend children's shows would be flooded with it also. To a point the culture here has changed drastically and dedicated otaku should just sit back and be happy that they don't have to search so hard to find a certain series here or a figure there and so on.

...It was weird today, one of my semi-friends (I don't hang out with him often, but I'll talk to him if he's there) asked about Fullmetal Alchemist (He'll watch anime, but he's more into american comics and stuffs).
...I proceeded to tell him that I had bawled my eyes out at the movie at AX 06, and my other friend was like O_O;;, because she's never seen me cry before (Okay, maybe once), much less in public, and she's my best friend that I've known for forever.

Personally I'd rather call myself weeaboo, but I partly blame 4chan for that, making me use that word and turing me into one.
Also Otaku just makes me think of 14 year olds with Naruto headbands using Japanese words like sugar on their chocolate frosted breakfast.

This whole thing is just as pointless as arguing about the proper definition of "anime." It doesn't matter what you call yourself. It doesn't matter if you call yourself anything at all. It's more important that you actually enjoy the hobby, instead of joining meaningless cliques and arguing about who's cooler like most of the other status-obessed superficial social animals of the world. We're all nerds with a nerdy hobby, and most of us are wasting time overcompensating by making fun of the nerdier ones -- a distinction totally lost on normal people, who see us all as basically the same. Nobody's impressed. Nobody even cares. We're all worrying about our own shit.
Use of the word weeaboo is intentionally self-deprecating, which is the point, I think.
white people already distorted the word otaku. In Japan otaku=anti-social misfits too embarassed face the world. Over there it's just pasty nerds who watches anime. No one gets insulted here when you use this world. In Japan people will kill themselve over it.

Otaku, weeaboo call your self what ever you want too, it doesn't change the fact that were nerds. It also doesn't change the fact that nobody (other than other otakus) will ever call us otakus.

Anyway, I got into this stuff in the 90's, but I'm only 19... I grew up using the word "otaku", so I'll stick with "otaku".
