A interesting thing about Avatar is that the animators where required by the director to buy and watch all of FLCL before working on the project. If you watch Avatar you will notice tons of moments that are very reminiscent with FLCL.

It's considered an anime in Japan, but not in America, since the Japanese word アニメ is not limited to Japanese animation.

Actually Japanese animation is in fact classified (by the viewers and reviewers if not the producers and TV stations) as shounen, shoujo etc, though there are obviously a large number of shows that defy this classification system. Are you going to argue that anime is never targeted to a specific audience? If so, I will have to laugh in your face.
