I'm reading Train Man, taken from 2-Channel at the moment; its very amusing... the translation is imaginative and I love the fact that it stuck directly to the forum format; I was supprised at how enaging it was to read. Has anyone else read and enjoyed this book? Isnt it cute :)
I've read the Project Densha translation, but not in book form. As my japanese isn't good enough for me to read everyday books, I must make due with translations. Although, if you know 2ch memes and phrases, it's not too hard to "understand" the translation.

Yeahs no my Japanese is non-existant so the copy i purchased was an english translation, but i thought it was really well done. I have almosed finished Train Man now, really enjoyed it. I have to say though, comparing the Densha translation with that in my copy that i would advise you to buy it if you really want to read the whole thing, Bonnie Elliots translation really brings the language to life with good alternatives to coloquial banter rather than straight translation which might not be understandable to a westerner.

Could someone tell me a bit more about this book? I know what it's about and the like, but is there an actual novel (As in, bound in a book and sold to people)? All I can seem to find anything besides what seems to be manga on it. :o
I know there is the book in Japanese, and that's what I have. by "Nakano Hitori". It's about 1300 yen. I didn't know there was an english translated book, though. cool.

Yeah its a real book, bound and everything :) It is presented in exactly the same format as the BBS (basically) with the posts of train man himself made obvious. It includes all the ASCII art too. It is the edited version which was compiled with the help of "One of us", who followed the original threads. I found it in a book store in Eton, England.

I believe in fact the translation is done by an English/Japanese although dont hold me to that. Anyway i understand your worries, and not knowing japanese i have no way of telling if the translation is at all good... but i have not once found a stupid Americanisation so it seems quite true; rather than being made mushy and paletable for that audience.

I'm reading it now aswell, the translations are damn good! From my limited experience. Tho I don't quite understand most of the ASCII art that they use, especially the smileys!
Regardsless its still a really good read, mostly because i can relate to Train so much =)

In english...no. Not that I could find, anyways. I found the japanese version in Kinokuniya in San Fransisco, CA, USA and they might have one copy left. Funny thing is, when I asked her for it, she knew exactly what I was talking about, and didn't look at me funny. (I don't look very otaku...in fact, I was wearing a nice suit, because I was meeting some people there ^_^;; )
Yeah, some of the art __ is really confusing... my personal favourite has to be __| |O .... Not that i am very good at reproducing it! It's quite amazing how engaging the book is really.

Thats true, naturally because its all taken from what happened on the internet the original version of the text is the abridged collection of postings from 2-ch. However I have read through the densha site and i recon the english in the book is a lot better. At least in the copy i have. Generally its a lovely story and well worth a read in whatever format!
There has been an English translation for the UK, but not for the US. I live in the US and after a string of google searches found an online bookstore in Maryland that had a copy of the english version.
It was a very fun read but it is obviously a "london" translation. With words like "mate", "loo", "pissed"(drunk), and "anorak"

I've read the book and the online translation. I liked the online translation more because it showed more... densha(?)
Though that's not to say the book wasn't good because it was. I enjoyed both. The story is one of my favorites.

That was a nice review. I agree completely with the author. It's a great story and if you haven't read it you should which ever version you choose.
Also, check out the TV series if you can find it. I heard that it was recently liscenced though I don't know by whom. It is worthwhile and adds some extra depth to the story.
