Cattywampus. Everything was cattywampus.
We need to start a thread called "words in mainstream society that should fuck off and die".
In that case, I would be voting for anything with "blog".
Ignomoron
I'd reccomend anything with over three syllables, actually...
Sometimes it's good to have an esoteric word now and again. It seperates the fans from the poseurs and the geniuses from the ignoramuses.
Speaking of: "esoteric", "poseur", and "ignoramus" should be used more often. I know "poseur" is used a lot but people always spell it "poser" which is technically correct but just sort of lazy and blasé.
>I know "poseur" is used a lot but people always spell it "poser" which is technically correct but just sort of lazy and blasé.
In other words, it's not pretentious enough? Oh the horror.
"sesquipedalian"
works well when followed by "motherfucker" and preceded by either "gtfo" or "stfu" and then a comma
I've always been partial to "niggardly", if only for the off-hand juvenile troll aspect.
flotsam
fjord
picaresque
miasma
indelible
melancholy
alabaster
chambarral
destitute
scourge
cad

"Fnord" is actually useful. I'm pretty sure that in your life you've sometimes felt like referencing 1984 in a political context but couldn't because just naming the Big Brother isn't enough and constructing a sentence in Newspeak is too long and it's difficult to make a funny one. Well, "fnord" comes in handy in that kind of situations.
pungent
Puerile.
Or maybe it's better off being uncommon, because that way, when you use it your contempt is more clearly conveyed.
Macabre
Delectable
Flibbertigibbet
Asinine

smarmy
I think betwixt sounds better than between.

>>22 A world having to use the word "macabre" more...is not a pretty world.
And after looking at all the ridiculous words in this thread, I have to say that being verbose doesn't mean you're smart.
I give my vote to smarmy.
lolilicious
refrobnicate!
"Let's refrobnicate the defoobarizer!"
Vexed
Plasmic
in the uk that has become quite common, mostly among urban kids/teenagers in the poorer areas. and the rich kids who try to copy them.
Taciturn
Verisimilitude and Avaricious. I'm surprised avaricious isn't used too often...
Mastication
vicissitude
Genuflect.
Semen.
persnickety
"scumcunt"
Fuck.
monastic
> asinine
For some reason I hear and see this word way too often among teenagers, and it seems out of place in their otherwise terrible sentences. I wish they wouldn't use it, and I also wish they would stop spelling it 'assinine.'
imho. just as a word.

So you want people advertising their employment status as a prostitute.
Are you some kind of narc?
Gnarly
Cowabunga
Antidisestablishmentarianism
Cromulent
> Antidisestablishmentarianism
This is not really a word in modern English, so it's floccinaucinihilipilification is justified. Please stop using it as an example of a hippopotomonstrosesquipidelian word.

Bitchtits.
It's in circulation, but clearly not used enough.
That and hiatus.
"Malaise" always struck me as pretty neat.
>>86
What about sugartits?
Whither, whence, thence, hence
I third the call for betwixt ('twixt is fine too, of course).
Antidisestablishmentarianism FTW.
Alas.
Cornucopia
>>90
Seconded! I've no idea how to express that meaning without that word.
Many, maybe even most of these words are used in mainstream society enough to make it unfair to claim they 'aren't in it'.
Outwith.
Gnarly.
>>94 What's the difference between "Outwith" and "Out with?"
Here's some examples to illustrate the differences:
"Tonight I'm going out with some friends."
"This discussion is outwith the realms of formal linguistics."
"Outwith" is similar in meaning to "outside of".
>>92
Where I'm from, "well, fuck!" is a perfectly acceptable alternative.
