Catcher in the Rye is a pretty awesome book. Basically it's about this 17 year old kid, who gets expelled from high school. He goes home to New York City and bums around for a few days, and he always says darn it or something around those lines. It's basically about all these girls he meets and stuff, and about what he does with them.

The book sucks. Its lame. If you want a good read, try 1984 or a clock work orange. Battlefield Earth was a book i thought would suck due to seeing the ove turned out to be great. Its an exquisite read but the movie blows donkey dick. You would figure that seeing as how John Travolta is a Scientology-fag, he woulda done a better job in that movie, seeing as how the book was written by L Ron Hubbard, the founder of his fail religion. The book is good and surprisingly, does not promote scientology. Try it.

I thought I read Catcher in high school. Years later I found a real copy, and discovered that the version I read was so heavily censored that it amounted to "One day I went for a crummy walk. Then I came home. The end."

I'm curious as to how you you came by a censored version of Catcher in the Rye. Salinger doesn't even like artwork on the cover of any of his books and this rule has been held through countless printings, so the man clearly has control over publication. I can't believe there's a cleaned up version.

It seems a little overrated now, but back in the day, it was ground-breaking. It's not so much that it's a great novel, it's more that it suddenly changed the rules. Bear in mind how heavily censored and sugar coated everything was in the 1950s. This book is contemporary with Ozzie and Harriet. Just think about that while you're reading it. It's not happy or positive, the main character is a dumb little jerk, and the setting is far removed from the suburban bliss that was being pushed so hard on America at the time. Basically, it was just honest...

I came by it in a stack on a teacher's desk in another English classroom, and liberated it because it sounded cooler than the Bridge to Faggotry my class was reading.

I remember that the cover art was pretty scant, but not much else, sorry. Long time ago now. But now that I think of it, it may have been titled 'The Something Something's The Catcher in the Rye'. Or something. All of the profanity and practically everything interesting that happens in the real version was edited out.

i actually have 4 copies of that book i happened to acquire over the years. it is a good read, and quick if you get into it, it is supposedly about post traumatic stress syndrome.

I'll wager that Salinger as a whole is a study in post traumatic stress.
