So, 4-ch, what do you think about Strauss and Howe's Generational Theory? Do you believe that it is a great theory, or is it just another form of pseudoscience? It is a pretty complex theory, but in short, they believe that history has been driven by generations and their place in history. They also say that these generations are divided into four archetypes, the visionary Prophets (Baby Boomers), the pragmatic Nomads (Generation X), rationalist Heroes (Greatest Generation and Generation Y [AKA "Millenials"]), and diplomatic Artists (Silent Generation). Nice, but it seems short-lived and America-centric. What about most of Western civilization which consisted of two classes (starving serfs & nobles) and two generations (living (>40) and dead (<40)). History still happened back then as far as I can tell...
I remember this, It struck me as incredibly short-sighted and melodramatic. I do not doubt that human behavior is cyclical and follows clearly recognizable patterns, I also think this kind of attempt at recognizing these patterns is a step in the right direction. However, It seems to me this is a massive over-simplication of much more nuanced historical trends. Much more data and a much less trendy way of identifying what is happening would be a significant improvement over this model
