100 Name: ( ˃ ヮ˂) : 1993-09-6539 14:17

( ・-・) I have no Facebook page, nor Myspace, nor Twitter account, nor a blog of any kind.

This is not because I am some pre-Internet technophobe who fears what he does not understand.

Rather, it is because I am old enough to remember when the WWW was just another competitor to FTP. I remember when colleges and universities would lease one single phone line at 9600 baud for their entire faculty and all their students. I remember BITNET and the online world that existed back when it was a secret a few math and comp sci majors furtively shared. Back when if you put something online, that meant it was important, that people would be interested in it, that it was, perhaps, data pertaining to some cutting-edge research that a group of scientists on different continents were collaborating to perform.

And I still have enough respect for the medium, for the bandwidth that other people are paying for. Email is a one-to-one medium, a personal medium. Email can be as personal and as silly as you and the recipient want, though always recall that email isn't really private and bored sysadmins have been known to read other people's mail.

But the Web is one-to-many, not one-to-one, and that means that it has to be important. It has to be interesting. And nothing in my life is important enough or entertaining enough to justify getting a Livejournal or a Myspace page to blather about my job or my vegetable garden or my new shoes to the whole of civilization. If any of my friends or relatives cares enough they'll ask me in an email. I have that much respect for the medium.

Is it hypocritical to talk about this on an anonymous board? Possibly. But at least I don't have up a Geocities page in which I ramble at great length for page after page about the inaccuracies in translated dialogue from some 1970s anime that was only shown in the US as filler before the Sunday morning church services on some little independent UHF stations in the 1980s. And that must count for something, doesn't it, fellow dokyuns?

Well, I'm not so upset about Geocities now.
So, I'd love to state my opinion on this matter.

As the internet traffic and storage capacity grow
the value of a single byte deprecates.

Uncontrolled emission of new hard disk drives,
memory cards and other mediums allow users
(including developers, designers, etc -
whose products are used by other people) to be wasteful.
Which they happily become.

People love to mock an infamous quote by William Gates
from early 90s. Even this genius didn't expect the crash
of the byte value. It's a shame that the company
of which he was a leader is particularly responsible
for this.

Similar thing applies for computational resources.
This is why I use BOINC. All those watts hertz
won't go unused. Hopefully, they will help scientists
to build a better world.

In conclusion, >>100, with today's mass availability
of the net access and vast space that various online
services (i.e. blog platforms) offer you for free,
it won't make a difference if you claim it. The deed
is already done. You won't ruin the WWW by posting
photos of your dirty socks, etc. You won't make it
better by not doing it. It's just a matter of choice.
Currently, you're like a vegan.

( ・-・) Autism, ADD, ADHD, and bipolar disorder are all vastly overdiagnosed, possibly by 2-3 orders of magnitude. They have ceased to be useful diagnostic labels and become the stuff of pop psychology.

( ・-・) On the other hand, schizotypal personality disorder is underdiagnosed, probably because it can be considered to be a set of trendy affectations that is quite fashionable in some portions of the Western world--except that it still cripples the person and makes him quite unable to cope with reality, especially if circumstances should conspire to move him out of his comfortable little bubble of like-minded moneyed postmodern urbanites.

( ・-・) Actually, the diagnosis of all mental illness involves some subjectivity. For one thing, it's sometimes required for a person to have a diagnosis to receive treatment, thus putting pressure on treatment providers to come up with one even if they aren't entirely sure. It's also common to prescribe medication based on a hunch, just to see what works.

Therefore, a lot of hyperactive children will be diagnosed as ADHD just so they can be given drugs like methylphenidate.

Diagnosis of autism and Asperger's syndrome is still pretty rare. Most people online who claim to be "aspies" really aren't.

But what is worse is the fact that almost as many Jews live in the US as in Israel. Which means that US has a very strong Jewish lobby. Thus Israel can break whatever laws, rules and resolutions it wants.

What I would like to see is not people suffering, but USA and Israel governments being put where they belong by the international community.

( ・-・) I think they're extrapolating their own self doubt, trying to absolve themselves by convincing themselves that they DO love it and that they should spare others like themselves a little grief. Or trying to save all those fools (a majority of art majors for instance) who don't understand that they're not really that good and they won't be paying the bills with it so wise up now.
( ・-・) In actuality, though, love is not about being intoxicated by a thing 100% of the time, and some of the best artists are full of crippling self-doubt and having nervous breakdowns about it all the time, but will never be optimally good at anything else. a lot of people say it still because a lot of people aren't educated well and think communism means evil USSR rather than what it actually means

their current set-up, although fairly socialist (gov owns companies), is still much more like what one would call capitalism rather than communism, just people don't get angry when lawmakers tell their company what to do

In most current capitalist societies in the west (especially the US), the government is just less involved with companies (until it's too late), and still does a lot of work controlling and limiting them (which is good, because full on laissez faire is pants-on-head retarded)

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/10/world/asia/state-enterprises-pose-test-for-chinas-new-leaders.html?_r=0

and since 1978, the allowance of private owned businesses in china has grown a large amount (and do note that some of that article and it's statistics at the end might not be the best as the gov is a minority holder in some companies)

I'd call it, moving towards the right spectrum of modern economic structure and definitely not within communism.

Communism's definition is overly strong though, and shouldn't really be thrown around as almost no actual large-scale society can manage what the idea entails.

I feel like I'm being fed a war, but they're letting the interns from college do the propaganda. It's vaguely irritating. There should be bold posters everywhere, showing well-drawn relief portraits of soldiers and crying women and farmers and stuff, with captions like "ARE YOU DOING YOUR PART?" or "FACE THE GREAT BEAR WITH COURAGE, YOUNG MAN."

You see, these little countries that spent most of their history under somebody else's rule strive to have those "national icons" to show how deep, proud and independent are their roots. Emokids, basically.

During the "collectivization of the kulaks" during the 1930s, the USSR killed between ten and thirty million Ukrainians--about 25% of of the nation's population. I am not sure how one can reasonably expect the descendants of the survivors to just forget about it--even if the Azarov regime attempts to ban public discussion of the topic and teach denial of the Holodomor in Ukrainian public schools--and welcome a return to Russian rule. This would be a bit like expecting the Chinese to silently accept a foreign dictator whom all knew to be a Japanese puppet.

The Russians are displeased because Putin meddled in the affairs of a neighboring nation and did so in a crude, ham-handed manner, and got caught, and it blew up in his face embarrassingly. Everyone knew the Azarov regime was a Russian puppet, a creation of the FSB, or whatever the old KGB calls itself this week. One need not be a "fascist," whatever that word even means in 2014 (and if it means "ruthless militaristic dictator who wishes to invade and conquer his neighbors," Mr. Putin and his fan club should look in the mirror and think carefully before flinging such a term around, or accusing others of "whitewashing WWII criminals"), to sympathize with the popular uprising that drove Azarov from power and drove him to seek exile in Russia. Perhaps this will result in a chastened Russia, whose power abroad and influence are yet further diminished.

Please ponder the meaning of the term "blowback." It doesn't just happen to the USA.

( ・-・) Holodomor has nothing to do with current events on Ukraine unlike "fascism" which might have a bit of relevance to far-right government that rose to power. If you were following the uprising, you probably noticed that its leaders were pretty much the same people who are responsible for the Orange Revolution. Police should have actually shot at protesters.

Current problem is that Eastern Ukraine doesn't want to be under new rule, but Putin chickened out instead of helping it, which is highly illogical after his annexation of Crimea by force when he promised to protect anyone speaking Russian. Unfortunately, he isn't "ruthless militaristic dictator who wishes to invade and conquer neighbours" despite of being portrayed as such in some mass media. Crimea was sought after by Russia, Turkey and NATO as it gives a strategic control over Russia's access to the Black Sea.

I'd also like to remind you that Ukraine was an integral part of Russian Empire and USSR and as such there are deep ties between two peoples effects of which on general population you might not perceive through political news.

( ・-・) The only "far right" government in Eastern Europe today is the Putin regime in Russia. We are aware of the Russian state propaganda organs' propensity to use the words "Nazi" and "fascist" for anyone, anywhere, who opposes Russian jingoism, revanchism, and irridentism. As a result the terms have lost all meaning and become empty obscenities, not even political.

And yes, we are also aware that Ukraine was once an integral part of Russian Empire and USSR, in exactly the same sense that Manchuria, Korea, Indochina, and the Philippines were once integral parts of the Japanese Empire. "Deep ties," indeed.

Why are Russians so tone-deaf, so unwilling to consider that centuries of brutal occupation, rape, looting, and mass murder of their neighbors might have left their neighbors a bit resentful, that their neighbors might not fully share in their enthusiasm and nostalgia for "the good old days" of the USSR?

Even the Japanese are better at taking a hint. The Japanese at least comprehend that their neighbors resent them and are suspicious of their motives, and that it has something to do with Twentieth Century history, though they still do not seem to grasp exactly why.

But this is becoming excessively serious.

Palestinian politics is bullshit. People have the choice between Fatah, which is composed of corrupt assholes, or Hamas, which is composed of violent assholes. There are other factors that pushed Hamas into power in Gaza, namely that it's a tiny shithole ghetto state that contains 2 million people who have fuck all for resources and can't better their circumstances because of political reasons. Likely people felt frustrated with Fatah there, though I can't imagine they'll be itching to put Hamas back in power after the latest war. Yes, however capitalism has one major flaw, and that is the construct of employment, which in practice is usually merely slavery with just enough pay to keep alive. The emancipation which the workers of the world need is self-employment.

Self-employment may only work because sufficiently few other people do the same. Probably, I don't know. Just thought of it. May be economics 101, mea culpa.
But if everyone were self-employed, there would be orders of magnitude more choice if you were in need of a chargeable service. Say, plumbers.
Then the market is essentially diluted, and a couple of things could happen: no plumber can make a living because of the extreme competition (in a world where each plumber is of roughly equal value). Plumbing becomes a cutthroat, penniless business and the world of plumbing self-destructs.
Or, a small number of plumbers are better than the rest, and people learn this and start taking their business to the best plumbers. They get more business, are more profitable, and eventually start having to employ in order to meet demand. Mediocre plumbers are put out of business.
Either way, the dissolution of the wholly self-employed market is inevitable.

Sounds terrible. Why the fuck would the workers democratically make decisions when more than half of them most likely have no experience in management or accounting? Privately run organizations allow people who have specialized in their field to do what they know best without the hindrance of people whose good intentions blind them from negative consequences.

> Privately run organizations allow people who have specialized in their field

Except that's not true at all. Control is arbitrarily given on the basis of ownership, not specialized knowledge and definitely not skill. The people "specialized on their field" who "do what they know best" get the short stick invariably. Which is more longer than the stick given to people without specializaed skill; nonetheless they both get shafted.

It's mostly that in practice it's used as an excuse to either exclude other people or actively make their lives worse, in the absence of any philosophically or factually sound argument. As such, it comes off as a sort of view espoused primarily by individuals who are either ignorant (they don't intend to cause damage or understand how it does) or evil (they do).

While there are many genetic predispositions common to certain ethnic populations, melanin level has essentially nothing to do with the value or potential of a human, all other things being equal. That last part is important, because people born into circumstances tend to perpetuate those circumstances unless acted upon by significant outside factors (which is how you get people both into and out of ghettos). If you don't know what it is to be a scientist, how can you be expected to desire to become one, and take any of the necessary steps?

829 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-8823 15:27

>>828 On the other hand, it's clearly true. Everyone wants to move into our neighborhoods, not the other way around. They move in, crime goes up, we move out, they follow us, crime goes up, we move out, and so on. Ergo, whitey be better. I suspect it's related to our willingness to do basic maintenance.

Japanese are even better then we are from a running basic civilization standpoint, but they mostly keep to themselves these days.

Because it's not an argument worth countering. It's just deranged rambling. Easy counters to anything like this are abound like dead fish in a bucket. White supremacists arbitrary choose Europe as their root heritage when it's well-established that everyone is from sub-Saharan Africa. White supremacy is also a very American phenomenon - other countries have just as bad a history of racism (ever wondered about the etymology of the word "slave"?) but often without a black person in sight. There is exactly as much "logic" in white supremacist arguments as there is in those of conspiracy theorists, and it's all ignorant bunk.

"Nerds" are repulsive. Bad looks, bad personalities, bad taste. Nerds think they're smarter than they actually are. Nerds like awful media like super hero movies or video games. Nerds let consumerism define their identity.

Nerds get obsessed with countries like Japan even though it's nowhere near as good as they think it is. Paris Syndrome can be applied to other countries too. It's the "things suck here, so surely they must be better elsewhere" kind of mentality. Or maybe people just don't grow up and actually still like cartoons even when they're adults. But I hope that's not the case.

When someone says they're "such a nerd" or something, they usually have a way to show it, don't they? They collect video games. They have a mountain of Xbox discs, or a huge Steam library. Fucking dumb and worthless plastic figures that they paid out the ass for. Or they collect anime DVDs or marvel movies. Or they buy extra hard drives to pirate it from torrent trackers. Sometimes a dude will try and tell other people that a piece of cardboard (from some stupid card game only losers care about) is worth thousands of dollars. In your fucking dreams. Artificial scarcity. And besides, what a fucking dumb investment to make anyway. Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is they think partaking is mass media makes them smart and different from everyone else. As if spending most of your free time on entertainment somehow makes you intelligent. Smart people don't make idiotic financial decisions either.

Then there are the STEM types who study majors where a lot of people work outside of their degree. I'm talking biology or physics. I personally know people with these types of degrees who do not work in the field they studied. If they were so smart, why couldn't they do research and figure out a more economically viable major? Yet these people would always look down on people who did trades, like welding or something. Newflash: Gamestop is retail, not a good career!

And video games. Ick. Don't even get me started. Shit like gamergate just shows how pathetic most gamerdudes are. It's a stupid issue and these guys basically admit that they hate women, but it's more than that. It's that they get upset over made-up internet bullshit about a shallow, consumerism-centric form of leisure/hedonism.

I once went drinking with some people I recently met and this one dude was talking about watching a Twitch stream when he was on an expensive trip. Just staying in the fucking hotel room instead of exploring the country. I called him out on his stupid shit and the other people agreed with me but they wanted me to chill out since they were conflict-avoidant (and I was a bit belligerent because I drank a lot). Imagine paying thousands of dollars to go somewhere cool just to sit on your ass and watch a livestream about video games. None of us hang out with the gamerdude anymore. If, for nothing else, because he's antisocial and doesn't even like hanging out. He'd rather stay indoors and play fucking games. But now I'm good friends with one of the other guys who wasn't into that lame shit though. We get food and drink together and I'm teaching him how to code now.

But you know what? People lump me in with that group of human garbage. As if someone who is passionate about software development is the same as a loser who memorizes trivia about dungeons and dragons or some shit. What the fuck is wrong with people? Don't associate me with that subhuman filth.

Yeah dude, getting a high score in a video game is totally the same as someone who focuses on their career and continued education. We're totally on the same wavelength. Give me a fucking break.

But it's more than the lack of culture or their lack of ties to any important group or community (aside from online shit). The problem is more than the self-centered gluttony. The other issue is how most nerds don't have any sense of morals. Usually atheist, often liberal or egalitarian, pro-degeneracy. Usually cookie cutter reddit views. Pathetic.

I find less and less of a logical argument against pedophilia. I would still shame anyone who did the behavior, since most people of that age would not have the mental capabilities to consent. There are many of lower IQ that we do allow to breed with whoever they want, though, so that curses that understanding of it. One would also argue that combining an individual that could not reciprocate the emotional development that would happen from oldest to youngest would also be a reason why such a relationship would go against the point of a relationship, but that feels weak and soon to crumble. I need to re-define my ethics on an almost daily basis.
