Were I a beginner or intending on making my code interface-able with, Python. Otherwise I'd pick Lisp (Scheme) because it is super nice and general purpose.
I don't know Haskell but I'd probably learn it just to understand its core ideas (I'm currently picking up OCaml and it is great).
