I am taking an online course in--well, it doesn't really matter what the topic matter is. There is an instructor who communicates with us via a webcam and microphone, and a chatroom in which the students ask questions.

It depresses me very badly to notice that no one else appears to have the faintest interest in the subject matter. They're in the military and new regulations said they had to have technical training in this field, and their commanders told them they had to do it in order to keep their billets. Or they're some other kind of government worker.

And the questions they ask in class, when they can be bothered to notice or take part at all, are generally terrifyingly stupid and indicate to me that they do NOT belong there.

But let me give you an example. Imagine that it's a class for auto mechanics. And there's one guy in the back who keeps interrupting the instructor to say "But I want the car to run on orange juice, isn't there some button I can push to make it do that?" And "If I paint the car a different color that will make it able to fly, right?" And "What's a wrench?" and "What are wheels?" Half the students in the course are asking questions like that. I'm facepalming so hard I now consider myself lucky I didn't accidentally shove my entire arm through my head up to the elbow.

How did they get into the class? I don't know, but the online school is taking the money and cashing their checks just like anyone else's. This makes me wonder whether my certification will be worth anything to any employer when I mention the school.

I'm depressed now, /dqn/.

That sucks >>231-sani= ₯ ƒF₯=)
Something similar happened to me when I was living the NEET life, in order to keep getting my dole the jobcentre forced me to go on a call-centre training course (when I signed up I said I would be happy doing any work, just not a call-centre). It was literally "Okay, this is a computer, and this thing is a mouse, and you use it to move the pointer on the screen. Find the thing called Microsoft Word! We use this program to write letters and things." So it was 3 days of typing example letters from a book into Microsoft Word then printing it.

Now, there were a couple of older guys who I could understand would benefit from this (they asked things like "How do you drag something, do you just click it and hold it?") but on the 4th day of the 5-day course we had to write about what kind of experience we had, and our ambitions etc. The tutor read about my computing degree and work experience and was like "...oh! My god, this all must be quite insulting for you? Why are you even here?"

Everyone on the course automatically got an interview at a call-centre a week later; there was a written test as a sort of formality, and though I tried to do badly I got high marks, so I just said sorry and ran away.

No damn cat, no damn cradle.

238 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-8040 15:11

Ironically, >>236, I am in training in order to un-NEET-ify myself. But if it becomes widely known that a lot of the people in this training finish the week still unable to grasp the most fundamental concepts, and if they pass the written test it will be a feat of rote memorization of what appears to them to be a long list of unrelated facts, because they do not understand the underlying theory that unifies it all and makes it all make sense--arrgh.

Once upon a time, in the information technology field, there was a certification called MSCE, Microsoft Certified Engineer. In the 1990s so many MCSEs got handed to people who went to cram schools, who memorized lists of answers, who cheated on tests, that MCSE has become a joke. "Must Call Someone Else." And now on a resume it's worthless.

My verification word is "duce." Clearly the web page thinks that I am being elitist and fascistic here. ;_;

The demise of SAoVQ brings up an important point: if DQN were to go down, would anyone have a reasonably complete, reasonably recent backup of it, or would everything be lost forever? The future. Just picture it. An infinite span of time, holding infinite possibility, which you stand on the very boundary of. Every action you commit now (right now!) is weaving threads of that future into the immutable reality of the past. It's terrifying, isn't it? There's something visceral about the whole thing, like vertigo. Reality shouldn't change like that, and yet it does, continuously.

We make plans, predictions, as though the future were just like the present - with everything immediate and certain - as though our minds simply can't cope with the nature of the future. Similarly, people still fight the battle of free will vs. determinism as though it makes a difference; either way, the future is the same vast, inscrutable, unknowable abyss it ever was.

And just imagine what might still be to come! Every record broken, every precedent defied, every expectation exceeded. The great wheel of human civilisation spinning ever faster, advancing ever further, leaving ever more crushed in its path. Nothing will ever be the same. The future is right in front of us. It starts at the end of this sentence and it goes on forever.

The future, the future, the future, the future, the future...

A long time ago there were several Christian kingdoms in the north of the Iberian peninsula while the south was ruled by Muslim Moors, and Portugal was just one of them. Over the next few centuries the Christian kingdoms slowly fought their way southward and pushed the Moors out of the peninsula, and a kingdom called Castille came out of it in the best shape and absorbed most of the other kingdoms, eventually becoming Spain, but the Portuguese allied with England and resisted being integrated into Castille.

At my new house I found a folder of notes from a student who must've lived here two years ago, judging by the dates. It has the name Hailie on the inside, and is mostly economics/business stuff, along with some English notes (it seems she was Chinese). I was just flicking through it out of curiosity, and found, towards the bottom of one of the last pages, written in small, neat letters:

Some of us get dipped in flat, some in satin, some in gloss. But every once in a while you find someone who is iridescent, and when you do, nothing will ever compare.

It seemed very poignant until I googled it and it turned out to be from some romance novel.

Also my desk says "MOTT MACDONALD DO NOT REMOVE", which didn't seem poignant before or after being googled.

Also also I have no bedding! Literally just a bare mattress to sleep on. Oh well.

The 2ch pass service was made by Zero Inc. and NT technology.
They secretly stored userfs credit card numbers and users personal information.
And, Crackers leaked those information.

I didn't have any access to the 2ch pass servers.
And Ifve never known that they stored such information on their servers.
After the leaking, they wanted to make 2ch pass again.
But I couldn't trust them so that I declined.

And, they were almost bankrupt.
So, Jim stole 2ch.net domain and systems.
It is what happened.

If they don't tell a lie, they can explain that
"Who gave or sold the domain and system to you?"
"Is there any evidence like a contract?"

There are no such evidence because they stole.

Actually, I have sued them in Japan. The lawsuit starts on Nov.
If I do illegal things, why wouldnft they sue me?
Instead of that, I have sued them because they are liars.

It's mostly my vim that, for whatever reason I can't really be bothered to find and fix, slows down at least proportional to the size of the file. That, and latex renderers also take time proportional to the size of the input (as expected) -- for a (now apparently obsolete) class of device tuned more for battery life than performance, these things add up. Especially at the later stages when you've already split as much as you can into separate files so the cursor can update more than once an hour and you're just tweaking layout and checking every change still gives you enough time to make another coffee.

Yes, I could change CPU scaling and keep the disk spun up for longer and whatnot, but then I'd be changing CPU scaling and keeping the disk spun up for longer for the sake of editing a document. I could just use lower-friction tools, perhaps the kind that doesn't leave a prompt up (presumably for you to input the rest of the file) when "there's no line here to end".

Nah, you're just trying to paint "leftists" with the same brush as the human trash that frequents vox day's blog and vox day himself, since he charmingly took the chance to say "must be gun control!" idea
I have this idea where we make a bbs with an effort system.

effort system
The effort system allows you to exert effort into the post (not by making an elaborate post, but by clicking a lot), and when you exert effort, your mood and intentions are read and it produces an emblem which is associated with that current post. Posts that are similar to each other have similar emblems (these are called sets).

collecting emblems
Users can also collect these emblems. To collect an emblem, you must show your understanding of the post and the poster. You don't need to empathize with him, but you need to understand how he felt while posting and vaguely understand his general attitude towards life. Collecting emblems ranks you up and gets you more control of the website's assets.

value of the emblem
Collecting sets is worth more than collecting individual emblems. This is the only thing that is established about the worth of an emblem. The value of an emblem is subjective unless it is part of a set. Because a real value can't be determined, we can't rank people based off of what emblems they have (unless it is in a set). More often than not, it is the person who has collected the most sets that has the most control of the websites assets. Still, each emblem will be given an associated value. The associated value is like how as humans, we associate a face to things like mountains or cars. Although the objects do not have faces, we can still associate a face with them. And although the emblems have no determinable real value, we can still associate value with them.

virtual pot
To associate value to the emblems, every emblem is mixed up in a 3d virtual pot that can be viewed live once a day for twenty minutes. When the pot is done being stirred, a cute anime girl who is the mascot of the website will remove the lid and begin ranking people based off her findings. If you do not attend the live performance, you're emblems will not be included in the pot. Although they will not contribute in determining the value of their selves or other emblems, they will still receive a value that will determine your ranking.

final thoughts
Really the most exciting part of this idea is the thought that millions of anonymous people could get together everyday for 20 minutes to watch a cute anime girl open up a stirred pot. If I could remove everything but that I would be happy. But the rest of it is kind of the foundation of the pot event. I also think that there needs to be more coherency between certain aspects of this idea since it isn't really well thought through.

Let me know if you're a programmer, artist, someone who can provide funds, or someone else who wants to contribute to this project. Or if you can't and still want to help, you can share this post with a friend or a colleague or a family member. And you can always give us feedback on our project. A release date has not been determined.

I find a bit bothersome when you get to the point that you think loneliness is an essential part of your unique identity. Highly ironic that the simplest course of action to dispell such a myth is to reach out and find that your neighbour is lonely too. But then you would lose an important part of your identity, wouldn't you? So you just don't even try and live purposely separated of the rest, married with the immutable idea that nobody will ever understand you, or that you will be forever incapable to form a significant bond with anyone except, maybe, your internet friends whom in reality you only share a couple of niche interests with... and the crushing loneliness because, let's be honest, we all share that feeling.

If I were to make something similar, I'd just make dictionaries for each mood, like the word cute is young and casual, whereas the word hitherto is polite and more "mature". Sort of like that website analyzer that claims that DQN is written by a girl.
Effort would be measured by length, mood, how many long words are contained within the post, the number of replies and lenght of said replies.
I don't think the emblem should match the post all the time, and the algorithm getting it wrong sometimes would be part of the fun.
Of course, on my website, the emblems would automatically personalize your anime avatar associated to all your posts.

There are many ways to give offense, but the easiest and most effective way is to ignore someone. By doing literally nothing at all, you can send the message to your target that you are better than him and that he is not worth even one second of your time. This works well if your target is trying to greet you or to speak with you, and it works especially well when many other people who you both know are around to witness it.

Pocky is my secret weapon. It helps me focus and keeps me from chewing my nails. It also has a form factor allowing for slow consumption so a box can go quite a long way.

When I need to do anything that'll take more than an hour or so, I like to hit up the library and find a quiet cubicle, which helps reduce distractions and force me to just get it done. I'll often find something interesting I haven't heard in the media section and listen to that while I work\particularly symphonies and other things with a large form factor, because it gives me the chance to sit down and listen to something start to finish that I wouldn't otherwise.

In terms of organization, as soon as I get an assignment I put it on my calendar. It's easier for me to understand my workload and remember to do everything if it's laid out that way. When it gets really heavy/stressful, I write down everything I need to do (school-related and otherwise) individually on sticky notes and then put everything in order of execution, then focus on only one thing at a time and refuse to deviate from that order; this helps keep me from feeling overwhelmed.

And yeah, having been on both sides of the "productivity" curve, I still have to remind myself that the time I spend after I finish stuff is better quality time than the time before I finish stuff. Why not maximize it? (The answer is inertia, which is in the end the biggest foe in our fight to be awesome and rich.)

It's totally fine to want to screw around and waste time. I think that's a more or less universal desire. You just have to recognize that just like with booze, you can control it or it can control you. In the words of Tower of Power, you got to keep your monster on a leash. In the moment it's not fun to put off rewatching Twintails until you finish that assignment, but if you zoom out and look at a bigger perspective, it makes more sense.

Man, I was so good at procastinating at college. I basically mastered the art of doing everything at the last minute. Studying, big programming projects, essays, they were all done right before deadlines.
But kids, don't make a habit out of procastination, or one day you may find yourself in the middle of Hades when you are working.
Also children, if you run an IT company, make sure your programmers are focused on one task only and don't overwhelm them with side projects for fucks sake. Why is this so hard for managers and VPs to understand is beyond me.

If there were a moé anthropomorphism of fluid dynamics, I imagine she'd be a cute girl with long, flowing hair cascading down her shoulders and a lovely stripy dress with swirly frilly bits along the bottom hem. She'd call out to you enticingly, and you'd rush over to her, arms open ready to embrace her, then as soon as you got within range she'd kick you in the nuts as hard as she can.

At first you'd be too shocked and in too much pain to understand what's happening. "But she's such a lovely girl! She couldn't possibly do something like kick me in the nuts." you'd rationalise. She'd smile sweetly at you, and you'd feel momentarily relieved, but then she'd just kick you in the nuts again, and keep kicking you, over and over again, until you either give up and leave her alone or succumb to the Stockholm syndrome and fall in love with her.

SICP is too hard for freshmen and doesn't offer that much for experienced programmers, you're better off just outright learning a LISP yourself. It was a very complete book, though.
But to be honest, I never really did need a "programming" book. Really, the two books I HAD to buy for my major because they were so useful was Cormen's Intro to Algorithms and the Silberschatz dino book cause I like dinos with PDAs. The rest I photocopied or downloaded.

Yes, SICP dives into abstraction even before Chapter 1. I think it was one of the courses where students sat spending much of their effort on making concentrated, understanding faces, but then, years later their brains finally processed the course and they thought, "What a genius lecturer we had!"

Speaking from my personal experience related to "computer science", unrelated to SICP.

Also, who takes that niche between novice programmer and experienced one? How experienced? And how impatient? I had a friend for whom hacking in C and Asm was child's play, yet he greatly recommended reading this book.

I browse reddit unironically. I've been doing it for the past month or so. The quality goes up and down depending on the subbreddit. Some of them are extremely 4chan-ish, in a "culturally homogeneous to the point of the userbase being virtually indistinguishable". If they appended everything with -fag, it would be literally 4chan running on another platform. Also the people at reddit like to jerk each other a bit more than 4chan, and by a bit I mean a whole fucking lot. Stroking it among each other seems to be like their favorite sport.

But really, it's surprising that the folks at 4chan and at reddit don't recognize each other a whole lot more. From a bird's eye view, they are pretty much the same young (and white) audience.

I don't think it matters at all. I don't think Reddit, or 4chan for that matter, are good places to discuss "ideas" to begin with. When it confirms their biases, the userbase takes everything at face value and do no discriminative effort at all, username and upvotes be damned.
Further, anonymity doesn't fix confirmation bias, it just removes one step from dismissing ideas contrary to your beliefs: if everyone is anonymous, in your mind, everyone is potentially a shill. No need to go check their posting history to pin the adjective on someone.

Indeed there's a subculture around beards. Why is it so surprising? If you decide to leave your beard for a long time, it pretty much becomes a part of your personality. I've seen people become nigh unrecognizable when they shave off their facial hair, beards are that big of a deal.

A person complemented my hat. Today is a good day.

852 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-8092 20:28

>>850
Because when I think of a person with a beard significant enough to warrant any kind of discussion about it, I certainly don't think of somebody who is eager to talk about it with others. I think of somebody who just doesn't want to deal with shaving every day and doesn't really care about other people's opinion of their beard. Perhaps it's a California thing.

853 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-8092 20:35

I used to have a pretty big beard; I eventually cut it off after I got tired of people identifying me as 'the beard guy' instead of talking to me like a person and complimenting something I did literally nothing to achieve instead of acknowledging my legitimate skills and hard work. It's unpleasantly like being an attractive female.

I'm terribly afraid of google fiber. That just seems like being directly hooked into the botnet. They currently have no actual competition as far as I can see. Competitors will probably be forced to go out of business. Then they'll start enacting their terrible privacy policies since we have no other option. No VPNs, no peer to peer networks. They'll figure out some lame policy about encryption to maximize their data mining. I'd rather my government run my internet. At least then I'd have small vote in the matter.

Why should society cater almost exclusively to the whims of an out-of-touch imbecilic elite who has inherited fortunes for generations? Why should we perpetuate the lie that magnates have earned said fortune themselves? It's hopefully temporary. The problem with small boards is that when a few bad posters appear, the whole website turns to shit. Unfortunately, I think the word "secret" in SAoVQ attracts some rather elitist trash to it. Of course, the only real cure to this is to lead by example. Post what you think is decent, ignore what you think is trash, and don't try to get in meta-discussions of what should and shouldn't be posted.

Why the hostility? All I'm doing is rhetorically pointing out that the argument

if taken to its logical conclusion, would be an argument for doing things that are obviously idiotic. Therefore, that argument is a bad argument. In fact, I would claim it is very useful to be able to identify, from a far distance, things that you won't enjoy. This will prevent you from wasting more time in the future.

So you should be considering what, exactly, you ended up not liking about Reddit, and wondering whether you can detect those same qualities early on with other sites. For example, many people dislike the way the moderation system in Reddit leads to a strongly-enforced collective opinion within groups of users. If you are one of these people, consider whether there are any characteristics of Tumblr that would lead to the userbase dividing into groups, and those groups then reinforcing their own opinions.

Or, perhaps, you can identify something that you don't like about 4-ch. The world is full of things to do, and it's not as if you'll ever exhaust the possibilities.

It takes some real density to take rhetorical devices to any sort of logical conclusion, just saying pal.

Let's get serious here though, I got tired of reddit because it's mostly a place to splurt out brief witticisms. Mildly long, well-thought out posts are barely even read on that place, let alone replied to (yet a post of mine that is literally 10 words long sits at like a hundred upboats) so I'm wondering if what's essentially a blogging platfrom is more receptive to long entries.
Also take some cool ideas from there since I want to make my own blog from scratch at some point.
And I just want to hang out with different people that are not you guys, don't get me wrong, most of you are cool and stuff, but there's like 50 different people here, tops.

>>981 On Tumblr you choose whose content you see* so if people don't want to read your long thoughts they don't have to follow you. Often I see people criticise it for being full of "dumb feminists" or "special snowflakes" or "SJWs" or whatever, but it's the user's choice to receive content from anyone like that...

*Since it was bought by Yahoo there are much more "recommended blogs" and sponsored posts and shitty adverts which kinda defeats the point I think... I hate David Beckham! I don't care if you're playing soccer around the world for charity! I don't want to see your face! And why would I be interested in following instagram camwhores?

I'm sleeping with a girl I don't even like that much just because I was so excited that somebody came onto ME for once

All this talk about Tumblr and Reddit made me thought I was on 4chan for a few seconds.

A rhetorical question is a way of presenting something which is not a question. In this case, that something was along the lines of eIt is better to try something before saying it's shit.f. This is a claim, an argument, whatever you want to call it. As an argument, we can question whether it's a good argument.

I find it amusing that you don't see this, but instead reply with what looks like an insult(?), and then go on to say that you are looking for ewell thought-out postsf.

Are we really discussing this seriously?. Such an egregious false equivalence should be visible by just about anyone. For what it's worth, I don't think many people would consider calling stuff poopy to be good argumentation. Maybe if you are 5 and on your anal stage. I'm not replying to any of this shit anymore.

You still misunderstand my posts, or perhaps you don't know which poster I am. I wrote only about literal shit, and then only because you had used it figuratively above. If you want to discuss something seriously (as you claim), you might as well do so.

Yes, upon rereading, it is clear that you definitely misunderstand my posts. I am only concerned with the fact that you are using a silly justification for your actions. You defended your choice of websites to browse with a certain reason. That reason was such a bad reason that I was compelled to point it out to you. The example about eating shit was not a comparison to Reddit - it was actually taken from your rhetorical question about etrying shitf (paraphrased).

Rereading the chain of posts with your misconception about comparisons to Reddit cleared up, you should find your posts rather entertaining.

There's like 3 different people responding to you. I don't think you know what's going on. I'm not >>988 and I'm not the guy who said he browsed reddit or tumblr, but let me clear this up for you. Yes, you don't have to try everything to make sure it is not shit. No, you can't say something is shit until you try it. This is not the same as saying "you can't say something is unhealthy or dangerous until you try it" because that is objective and can be known without experiencing it. Saying something is shit is a subjective thing that you can only know through experience. If the guy wants to find out for himself why tumblr and reddit are shit, props to him.

Sometimes its hard to let go of things.

996 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-8109 00:35

Sometimes you got to let it all out and be savage.

But sometimes, by chance, you slip past everything, and when you look back, there was nothing there.

Nah, it's pretty clear who the one-offs are, who are rightfully irritated by the conversation. It's just that the one guy completely misunderstands what he's even being replied to about.
