You never understood it properly. Nerd originally came from ‘knurd’ which is ‘drunk’ backwards, as in a person so uptight that they are no fun to be around. Which while it applies to people who are studious, generally was just someone who couldn’t have fun and took themselves seriously regardless of actual wit or importance.
