The leading academic theory seems to relate to the belief that conventional sexual orientations and gender identities are often imposed by social pressure on people who don't really fit into them (consider the common example of the churchgoing Republican politician with a wife and five kids who's discovered sucking cocks through a gloryhole in an airport bathroom.)

As autists aren't going to be 'normal' no matter what they do, they're highly resistant to social pressure that pushes them towards normal behavior, and can't be made to find it any more shameful to sexually identify as Sans Undertale than they find their existence in general to be shameful.

There are some alternative theories involving genetic or hormonal links but these are flimsier.

Sure it may seem like a huge outlay of cash to buy a home now, but just think: in the distant future, it will be worth a lot more!

Of course the world will have gone Mad Max by then, so it will be worth half a dog carcass and a shotgun shell. That's still a lot of value.

Taking control away from the user in favor of some "trusted" third party is always user hostile. This is true of extension signing and devaluing self-signed certs compared to other certs as well, let us not forget beacons and shipping with google tracking and open support for EME. Mozilla is hard at war with its own users in a battle of vendor-knows-best. Browser vendors are your enemy and they are lying to you about keeping you safe and the myth that you need to stay current.

the more serious answwer than you wanted is "bethesda is too lazy/cheap to create more than one 3d model of female player torsos"

That's like this pasta, overall it's pretty good but there's one little line, just six words, that makes it one of my favorites.

after 13 of lucky star I myself have come to the realisation that I too am in love with konata izumi. when I was in 8th grade I read love hina and fell head over heals for shinobu maehara. shinobu was a softspoken frail girl who cried alot and easily blushed. at that time I had a similal personality. the sence then I learned that most people are attracted to themselfs only in the form of the opposite sex which might explain why I loved shinobu for soo long. from love hina I moved on to various anime and have watched at least 50 different shows and thouroughly enjoyed them all. I am proficient at japanese and have been told by people who only speak japanese that I should live there.

when I saw konatas room in lucky star I acctually found it quite pathetic for a character who is described as an "otaku". I myself pwn her when it comes to anime merchendice.although I still hold my beleif that I am attracted to her because I she her and a mirror image of myself.

Last night I couldent stop thinking of her. I imagined what It would be like for her to be laying where I sleep(on the floor of my room) as we embace eachother.I imagined the sweet taste of her saliva as we kissed. and the warmth of her skin as we held our bodies close together. the warmth of her thighs as she sits on my lap. and of cource the wonderfull beautifull sex we would have together.

I woke up and imagined her. what if she was here. would she cook breakfast for me? would she hold me as tightly as she could as I left for work? would she kiss me goodbye?

on the bus I had to hide my erection as I sit dazed by the thought of her.I even have a coworker who is a small female who likes anime and games but I payed no attention to her today. Konata Izumi is something else and I would give anthing to find her in real life.

Rozen Maiden has ruined my life, like it has done to so many others.

Less than a week ago, I thought the premise of the show was the stupidest thing I'd ever heard. Suiseiseki was just a meme, and I didn't even know any other characters. But then I watched the first episode. And then the second. And couldn't stop until I was done with Traumend. That was four days ago. By then, I was hopelessly entangled. I was in love with the show and the dolls. I started daydreaming that I was a member of the show's cast, or that I had a Rozen Maiden of my own. I suddenly had a craving for tea, so I went out and bought some, and it's all I've been drinking these past few days. And then it got even worse. Two days ago, I watched Overture. Now, I'm hopelessly in love with Suigintou. All I want from life is to be able to hold Suigintou and be able to cheer her up, make her happy again, so I can see her smile again. I fantasize about her becoming human, so I can go out with her, make sweet, sweet, love to her, and marry her and have a happy life with my dear Suigintou. The show's given me other side effects, too, which keep getting worse. Whenever I see porn or hentai now, all I can think is "no dolljoints, not hot." All I can fap to is Suigintou doujins. I see Shinku's face and get in a bloodcurdling rage like I've never felt before. She made my Suigintou cry! I've stopped caring about my car, which for years was everything to me. I've stopped caring about what I eat, except for a craving for Flowery Hamburger. I don't care about any other anime, manga, or any video games. My only realistic desire right now is for an accurate Suigintou doll that I can cuddle while I sleep. I get jealous when I see anyone talk about her or post her picture, and pissed off when I hear the word junk.

Come to me, Suigintou! I'll love you, let me make you happy! You're not junk, let me give you my devotion and love and you'll see that you don't need to be so sad!

I'm crying as I type this.

Used to be a small BBS where pro devs and talented amateurs shot the shit about game programming. Some kid named himself The Game Designer and proceeded to act like he knew what he was talking about. Half a post in it was clear he didn't know a fucking thing.

I think in the torrential downpour of "shut the fuck up, retard" posts that resulted, we killed his dream. I feel no guilt for that.

Some people just ain't got it.

I hate to be the guy that brings out the dictionary definition, but I feel that it's actually pretty relevant considering it's about usage of a word, so here goes:

sin noun (1)
\ˈsin\
1
a : an offense against religious or moral law

b : an action that is or is felt to be highly reprehensible it's a sin to waste food

c : an often serious shortcoming : fault

So there you go, there's evidence for usage outside of a religion.

I think it's worth adding that christianity and christian eschatology has a deep influence on what we deem is "western culture", including secular lifestyle, so you not only have secular people using the word "sin" outside of a strictly religious context, you also have atheists celebrating Christmas, of all things, because who doesn't like getting presents?

erm, though I do want to point out it is odd how people focused on the connotations of the word "sin" instead of the implication that there is some mechanism of fate that makes some sorta retribution happen... didn't want to shut down that sort of discussion, though.

after all, that's not how they taught us to play with others at shortbus school ヽ( ゚ヮ・)ノ

The problem with that sort of advice is that the students who need it most won't bother to read it. Although I'm probably being too cynical, it will probably help at least a few kids and that's better than nothing.

When I was a student I loved the teachers that were cynical, smart, and eccentric. I probably would have liked the teacher you are describing. But now I think back on those teachers and find them shallow and a bit cringe-worthy. The sign "our sins catch up to us eventually" would have probably seemed profound and edgy to my teenager self, but it seems kind of bland and lame now.

As for the truth of the statement, it seems pretty reasonable regardless of your religious beliefs. Even if there is no such thing as karma, you're likely to get caught eventually if you have a habit of doing bad things. And even if you never get caught, you will probably end up punishing yourself in one way or another.

A man was arrested in Yulee Monday after deputies say he stabbed a woman in the head with a fork in a dispute over a baked potato.

Kenneth David Crumpton Jr., 36, has been charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon after Nassau County deputies say he stabbed victim Angela Gullion Sunday at 78040 Susi Ln.

Upon deputies' arrival at the scene, Gullion refused to give them information but deputies soon recovered a fork and a bloody, white T-shirt from a vehicle the victim was sitting in. Deputies reported multiple stab wounds and blood to both sides of Gullion's head.

A woman who called police told deputies that Crumpton had stabbed Gullion during an altercation over a baked potato.

Crumpton was arrested and confirmed to police that the dispute was over a baked potato but that he had only thrown the fork, thinking it "glanced off her head."

Crumpton is due to appear at the Nassau County Courthouse, though his date has not yet been set.

Group projects always suck. I had to make the actual thing work in the last 2 weeks (it was a whole-term project) because Chinese Dave promised he'd take care of most of it and his "friend" would help him (i.e. he got someone to lift some prior art off the streets of Shanghai and then do a crappy mechanical translation from C++ to Java, which obviously wasn't going to run).

It's always the weirdest thing to explain. People love hard and fast rules for something as complex as human language; y'know, that thing where usage of a very simple grammatical point could take like one page of explanation and another page of examples to actually give you the picture. "Words are the daughters of earth, and things are the sons of heaven." (Sammy J gon squint at me for that one)

There are terms of abuse which should often get translated to swears but you can show them on TV no problem as long as it's in the right time slot (and boy howdy does Asian TV have tantrums that put Donald Duck to shame). There are un-PC/fukinshin words that do get censored, but they are exactly that, not swears like some idiots claim.

They inconsistently do the p0n0s and vag00 thing, though. AFAICT that has to do with the equally inconsistently enforced porn laws. I mean, even they can't explain that shit.

True enough, in my personal experience plenty of incompetent people get hired, although I've never been forced to work with them. They usually just harmlessly surf the internet all day and collect a paycheck while I do the real work. Even then, most days I can finish everything in a few hours and spend the rest of my day mindlessly browsing the net or reading ebooks.

Occasionally I am tasked with fixing one of the incompetent people's code, in which case it's usually easiest to just throw it all out and start over from scratch, which at least gives me something to keep me occupied for a few days.

If you only hire people who know what they're doing they'll work under the assumption that people in general know what they're doing. Nothing produced this way can have mass appeal because people don't want Death at a Funeral (UK) they want Death at a Funeral (US) with Tyler Perry and a laugh track. You'll end up with something like DQN here, instead of a trash heap of barely functional JS like tiktok. The market cannot abide by sensible decisions made via a rational thought process to produce a working product, it needs self driving cars that run node.js to actuate machine learning on the market this quarter.

IOSYS put out a music video this year, a medium-low catchy song about -squint- reuploads and pirates and not getting money from songs and how what people say and what they really think (tatemae and honne) are different.

The kickstarter came out at just the right time. It was around the peak of the Oatmeal's popularity, when Millennials everywhere were still Liking and Sharing the comics because it was the Voice of their Generation. "Yes! I too, love Sriracha Rooster Sauce! SO TRUE."

Around the same time, non-digital games were growing in popularity. College dorms around the country were already stocked with Cards Against Humanity. Everyone was eager to add a new wacky faux-edgy party game to their collection.

And so households everywhere ended up with this crappy card game. Whenever I come across it, I like to ask about it as if I've never heard of it. The owner invariably replies something like, "Oh, that game? I got it from kickstarter...it's kinda fun, I guess." Their tone makes it clear that they've already outgrown the game.

they always seem to be ranked above some actually decent replies unless the actually decent replies were that uproariously funny.

twitter might be a better place if they focused their efforts on putting the half-buried technique on these instead of on people with wrongthink or who just happened to drop an f bomb.

I am making this post to prove to Wikipedia that the year "1993" listed is a joke. Also 4-ch isn't 4chan, which didn't exist in 1993 anyway.

Hello, people from the year 1993. I come from the future, where Japan has taken over the world, as was expected in 1993. At least, anime took over the internet.

Speaking of Japan, a magnitude 9.1 earthquake with an epicenter at 38.3 N 142.4 E and a hypocenter 29 km undersea will occur at 14:46 JST on 11 March 2011 and cause a 40 meter high tsunami to hit the coast. キタ━━━━━━(゚∀゚)━━━━━━!!!!!

Along the road, there was a half-mile-or-so deserted stretch. About half of the streetlights went dead as I walked under them (give or take a few feet). For one group, it was four in a row.

When I looked back, many of them had come back on. It would have been much cooler if they'd stayed dead. I hear that, back in the 90s, street lamps would cycle like that as they were dying.

The original experimental treatment for "pernicious anemia," a deadly affliction that occurs when cells in your stomach lining stop being able to secrete a protein critical for absorbing Vitamin B12, was having a healthy person eat something (usually raw meat but I'm not sure if that was important), vomit it up and then feed the vomit to the sick person. They would then absorb the necessary protein from the vomit.

I bring this up because humans are animals.

and because that crowd is simultaneously medium-high in INT and extremely low in WIS, i thought the infomercial-like incompetence would be a bit amusing, but i think actually it would just be like a normal season of Survivor, except it doesn't end. so in my scenario nobody misses them not because nobody would, but because they are clones.

Read lots of books, 80/20 style; record anything you want to keep remembering in SRS software like Anki (this is a thing you have to meta-study), don't forget to apply things practically or you'll just be a consumer and not a producer. don't get discouraged by the puffery you see on places like Hacker News or from the superstar open-source devs, a lot of these people are in fact better than lots of others at programming, but the degree to which this is true seems like pure vanity to me. "the complete software developer's career guide" is one of several books that can give you some pointers on how to get started, but there's no be-all end-all out there.

(source: I am still struggling to find a job after graduating years ago and programming since childhood in the 90s; every rejection has so far vindicated of my abusive parents in regards to my worthlessness, and I live with those narcissists, so my brain comes up with the counterproductive solution, "well, we're just not going to apply that much")

I have to fight for every moment of clarity so hard and I want to help you because I feel this pain so keenly).

Today you can just choose a curriculum like teachyourselfcs.com and be on your way. Many people (unlike my parents and many educators) claim the diploma doesn't matter, I don't know to what extent they are telling the truth. I have the slip of paper, did very well at an interview at a tech giant, and they still decided "no hire".

If you are serious, you do have to keep in mind that professional game journalists, that is, the game journalists that are paid to write about video games, are first and foremost communication and journalism majors and "gamers" second. I don't think general incompetence at common tasks is that characteristic for most of them.

Also at least some them must feel stuck in some sort of game journo rut and being virtually kidnapped must get them off a little bit since surely it must make for some good reporting, right? That's assuming they're not aware they are replicas.

How to become a programmer? Depends when you're asking.
If you haven't tried anything yet, follow some "learn [language] from scratch" tutorials. You'll have to find them yourself, but you might like to start with something like Python, Ruby, or Clojure. They're popular with hobbyists and professionals alike, so a good tutorial can help you feel like you're getting somewhere useful quickly.

If you've already done that though, and can write a small program by yourself, I recommend learning a completely different language. Seriously. The more languages you know, the more you can tell whether you're learning how to write programs (good) or just how to use that specific language (not so good). If your language describes itself as "object-oriented", learn one that describes itself as "functional", and vice-versa. Or swap "dynamic" with "static" types.
Specifically, http://learnyouahaskell.com/ is a great from-scratch tutorial for a statically-typed functional language.
And https://docs.racket-lang.org/ assumes you know some basic concepts of programming but is a very good learning resource for a dynamically-typed language.
(These are not particularly popular languages but you may appreciate what you can learn from them, even if you never use them again).
There are obviously other languages, but hopefully some searching around will give you other avenues to search.

Finally, if you're asking with a couple of months of experience under your belt and are still wondering what to do next in order to turn programming into a career, practice. Write programs for yourself. Write programs that solve problems you have, or automate tasks, or do something interesting you've never programmed before (e.g. use a SQLite database or a TCP socket or an FFI for a C library, or a GUI). Write text games or graphical games. Pick a simple utility program on your computer and replicate it. Write medium-sized programs with multiple moving parts -- programs like that might seem daunting at first, but you'll be fine.
Importantly, don't be afraid to drop a project and go on to something else. Think of programming as art, and programs as sketches. Every failed program taught you something. If you want, try writing it again, but do something different. Different language? Different architecture? Different libraries?

After that, you'll only get better at it. The nature of the puzzles in programming naturally help you become a self-directed learner, so you only have to rely on your patience, curiosity, and google-fu to learn more. At this point, if you don't feel ready to apply for a job, do it anyway. A junior position at a larger company will show you the low bar your peers are meeting (seriously) and the high bar the seniors can help you reach (they will want to help you).

It's one thing to think, "I hate my life, I'll never be happy." It's another to remember, "wait a minute, I was happy last week, when the sun was out and that stranger smiled at me." If you make a habit of noticing your happiness, you have something to fall back on when you're feeling hopeless.

fuck me, i understood what was said perfectly, but the distinctions they want you to draw on these standardized tests can get way too subtle. the correct answer could be more than one of these options depending on how much of a rat's ass the listener gives, or how good they are at small talk kind of thinking, etc.

not terribly different from reading comprehension sections of standardized tests i took in grade school, though. i always either got 95-100% or ~75%, not much in-between. it was always like you were trying to outsmart the test-maker instead of just understanding what the freakin words do or don't say.

bonus: those two verbs both have a definition meaning "to arrange words" (as in a poem) and the immediate context makes that the most applicable interpretation. but the meaning goes deeper than that, as the other definitions mean that they could apply to mending scraps / organizing junk (patch and line up), the actual process of using vocaloid (spelling words alphabetically and lining them up on a piano roll), or (with a lot of stretching) people doing things in unison.

> With this Thaumast, with great toil and vexation of spirit, rose up, but in rising let a great baker's fart, for the bran came after, and pissing withal very strong vinegar, stunk like all the devils in hell. The company began to stop their noses; for he had conskited himself with mere anguish and perplexity. Then lifted he up his right hand, clunching it in such sort that he brought the ends of all his fingers to meet together, and his left hand he laid flat upon his breast. Whereat Panurge drew out his long codpiece with his tuff, and stretched it forth a cubit and a half, holding it in the air with his right hand, and with his left took out his orange, and, casting it up into the air seven times, at the eighth he hid it in the fist of his right hand, holding it steadily up on high, and then began to shake his fair codpiece, showing it to Thaumast.

Catching cold and... windiness at the same time is the worst. You either suffer from a clogged nose or a terrible stench. Open a window to let some fresh air in, and suddenly it's uncomfortably chilly, aggravating the muscle pain. Double points when snot "captures" the smell in the nose and you suffer from both.

You're not wrong? 4 of those 15 letters don't represent a sound in "proper" speech of the past 2 or so centuries, the kind of diction in which we'd expect the word to appear. 3 if we insist the silent e matters and should stay (e.g. to indicate soft g). That still leaves 20% of it as bullshit. Furthermore, it is 30 minims wide, and removing said 3 letters, which account for 7 of them, would mean the word is approximately 23.3% bullshit in the typical proportional font.

I shall leave aside how "know" won out over "wit", or "w" over "ƿ", or other simple coulda-beens whereby we might have had less unwieldy-looking constructions.

The fact that so many books still name the Beatles as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" rock band ever only tells you how far rock music still is from becoming a serious art.

>>929 I know this is ancient kopipe, but it makes the mistake of assuming the ideal goal that rock music strives for is to be regarded as "a serious art" when it's actually foundationally about the opposite - letting your primal self take over and losing yourself in the moment, going wild and getting fucked up. Since the days of the Beatles, other music styles have appeared for this purpose, whether it was disco or house or trance or dubstep or whatever, and in all cases it's a bit silly to view them as the "serious art" efforts they were not intended as, no matter how timeless a tune it might be.

Saying that, the Beatles really did change a lot with their later albums, from a young band playing rhythm 'n' blues rockers to opening their third eyes and making double albums overloaded with musical ideas. They opened the door (no pun intended) for that shift to AOR that desolated the 70s - after Sgt. Peppers (and also Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys) suddenly everyone wanted to make flabby overwrought timeless albums for the critics. And if that never happened, there'd have been nothing to burn down when the punks came along to return to the spirit of rock 'n' roll. And without that dying breath that punk brought, we wouldn't have got to the REAL interesting stuff the post-punk scene brought to the table.

I think you're wrong in the sense of purpose The Beatles placed into their music. The aim evidently goes beyond just mere sensorial enjoyment, else they wouldn't have bothered searching for technical innovations of the art form if they weren't yearning for some sort of transcendence from traditional rock and roll. The psychedelic themes are also a huge hint here, transcendental spirituality was the goal all along. Lifting the soul to reach some sort of higher truth, I guess.

That is also why punk is so antithetical to whatever the beatles did, they reject spiritual truisms and religious navel-gazing and fully embrace the grit and pathos of the real, modern world and incorporated it into their music. You're right here when saying that punk couldn't have existed without the beatles though, an opposition movement couldn't have being given birth without something to oppose

Anyway, I like the copypasta because it's made by the same guy that called a fucking eurobeat ripoff called dubi dubi doo or some shit "a demented dance-pop anthem" and that's hilarious

946 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9277 12:03

>>939 Sorry, I wasn't very clear, that's what I meant when talking about their later stuff - their early stuff was simpler rock 'n' roll and covers in the vein of their rock 'n' roll and blues heroes, and then later (after Paul died ;) ) they got more inventive and adventurous, aiming for something higher, as you say. I'd also say it wasn't so much "The Beatles" that punk rebelled against, but the whole flabby AOR dinosaur scene that the Beatles made way for - by the time of the proper mainstream punk explosion, the Beatles had been gone for nearly a decade. A lot of proto-punk bands you could say were doing the same kind of thing as the Beatles did when they were starting out as well.
