37 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9382 19:17

I used to be really smart, now I think I'm only pretty smart. Definitely slower than before, and increasingly noticing that I have a hard time focusing. I think it's a combination of chronic sleep deprivation, marginal dietary habits, poor self-discipline, Internet-based attention span erosion, and mild lead poisoning from years of soldering without any kind of protective gear or safety precautions other than "wash your hands when you're done".

I wonder if ritalin or something of the sort would help me focus better. I can't just experiment with stuff because my job (which I otherwise like) does drug screening pretty regularly. Then again, being able to focus properly would make probably the single biggest quality-of-life difference I can think of.

Tin/lead solder is still very much standard for soldering (especially hand soldering) in some industries. Lead-free solder varies from "kinda aight" to "such a pain to use" and many of the alloys have potential for whiskering, although in practice that's usually not an issue.

Recovering from surgery earlier today. They gave me vicodin, but so far there's not much pain so I'm gonna try to avoid taking any if possible. There's just some swelling, which I'll try to manage with elevation, ice, and ibuprofen.

Honestly, vicodin scares me. I know I most likely won't have any problem if I take it at the recommended dosage, but man, opioids are no joke.

what is cheating, and what is (ab)using mechanics/glitches?

146 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9391 18:28

>>145
As I see it, mechanics/glitches are equally available to any player and inherent in the game/software. Cheating would imply an unfair advantage, ie many tool assists, wallhacks/whatnot, or an accomplice passing normally-unavailable information.

You can abuse mechanics and glitches with skilled use of the inputs and information available to all players from within one (running) unmodified copy of the game. Anything else is cheating.

Where did that shoddy list of symbols come from, and why can't they just use Unicode for their passwords like an actual professional company? (This is a company that markets very expensive industry-leading equipment, and also very well-regarded software to support it)

actually, i've been at it for about 6 days and had fairly abrupt improvement over the course of today after the first five didn't do much. been taking a rather muscle-headed approach, right eye day, left eye day, rest day--but today they refused to rest. improvements to physical ability can be like that sometimes.

  • i can now read the screen with my right eye (-4.00 prescription) without needing my face over the touchpad
  • the appearance of the blur has changed somewhat, it's more readable
  • (some?) muscles around eyes have DOMS-like pain, but not quite; i don't know how to describe this, it's something like i've been trying to suck my corneas through my retinas shape-wise, and that's sorta how the soreness is patterned
  • it's pretty cool when you feel things pulling into place and you're seeing slightly more clearly as a result, though.
  • if i needed to drive, glasses would be too strong to be bearable but natural vision would be too weak to be safe (or legal for that matter)

so, we can say the initial results are promising, but can easily fall in "newbie gains" territory

>>373 I'm not mad, it was my current thought, and it always stands out to me - they're probably just lazy and not really a dimwit but a bit of netiquette would be nice.

375 Name: RFC 1855 - Netiquette Guidelines : 1993-09-9419 18:27

- Use mixed case. UPPER CASE LOOKS AS IF YOU'RE SHOUTING.
- Use symbols for emphasis. That *is* what I meant. Use
underscores for underlining. _War and Peace_ is my favorite
book.
- Use smileys to indicate tone of voice, but use them sparingly.
:-) is an example of a smiley (Look sideways). Don't assume
that the inclusion of a smiley will make the recipient happy
with what you say or wipe out an otherwise insulting comment.
- Wait overnight to send emotional responses to messages. If you
have really strong feelings about a subject, indicate it via
FLAME ON/OFF enclosures. For example:
FLAME ON: This type of argument is not worth the bandwidth
it takes to send it. It's illogical and poorly
reasoned. The rest of the world agrees with me.
FLAME OFF
- Do not include control characters or non-ASCII attachments in
messages unless they are MIME attachments or unless your mailer
encodes these. If you send encoded messages make sure the
recipient can decode them.
- Limit line length to fewer than 65 characters and end a line
with a carriage return.

When I don't use caps, it's a stylistic choice because a) I feel like there's a distinctly different tone implied, and that tone happens to be more appropriate to the message I'm sending; and/or b) it enhances the anonymity aspect of the board when I don't use a consistent writing style across the posts I submit, and I like that idea.

Prepending a string is easy behind an abstraction, and correct algorithms to do so can be devised by a beginner, but it's not necessarily a performant enough operation depending on your requirements and data structures. I gather that the usual method in practice is to use a standard library's strings and not worry about it too much unless it becomes / contains a foreseeable problem, but I won't pretend to be a professional, just someone with a three-digit rank on a coding contest site.

I'd rather not say, because it would be personally identifying, sorry. But you just find one, start from easy problems and work up to harder problems.

Note that the all-stars of this style of coding are shitting out low quality code because they have to get the answers fast; while you can learn very clever things from analyzing their code, it's not a way to write code that's supposed to be used for real (i.e. someone will have to read it someday).

A lot of the easier problems are variants on things you'd find in any algorithms textbook. A lot of the harder problems are actually too hard for me, but they're usually like multiple layers of the obscure problems found in the doorstopper textbooks programmers only claim to have read to look cool but haven't actually.

It has given me cause for worry, because I translate nerd shit from Japanese and the translator for the new release is currently getting lbg` by people who don't know the language for producing (at least on the lines in question) a more faithful translation than ADV's. It's a teapot's worth of a larger wave, admittedly, and the guy is kinda old and established in Japan so psychologically I figure he's probably okay. But I wouldn't be.

Of course, I do love the series and I refuse to let any dark stain tarnish its majesty; yeah okay if we're being real, in some ways it's a meaningless disaster. But it's a beautiful meaningless disaster, and that's something I value in art.

I'm of two minds about it. Some of the complaints are over dumb shit, but I don't understand how the translator got "worthy of my grace" from "Dӂɒl". That's just not what "grace" means in modern English. My guess is he was trying to make Kaworu sound more... angelic at the expense of accuracy.

Rendering ZNg as "leftists" is also perhaps technically correct but guaranteed to be misinterpreted by anyone who isn't familiar with the postwar Japanese far left. Kind of like describing Ayn Rand as a "liberal" or something.

476 Name: (*゚ー゚) : 1993-09-9433 04:42

I 100% disagree with the premise that it isn't what "grace" means in modern English, although I will permit that going word for word, grace translates to D better than the other way around. It wouldn't have been the word I'd pick, but in context it's medium-alright, and I would say all this of ADV's choice to say "regard", too. No one word is a true winner in this case.

In the script, Shinji responds REC? in katakana, as if unsure of which definition (or which kanji, even). Of course, it's only sure that he's probably asking for clarification. It's ambiguous even with full context and a full understanding of the possible meanings.

ɒl is closer to "worthy of" than "worth", when you look at the highfalutin words it gets used with compared to l or b; that it's a little on the cringeworthy/churchy side is both accurate and consistent with the preceding lines (and Shinji didn't give a fuck anyway). "My" is a word I would not have, since it exposes his meaning one sentence sooner than he gives it up (ADV did it, too).

I do think the reprise of the statement at the end was a poor choice: Shinji was speaking only simple words while wallowing in his grief. Oh well, such problems are a big part of why I started learning the language.

On ZNg... I think you accidentally a word or two. If you meant to s/"leftists"/"sect"/ then yes.

Interesting perspective.

Rather than saying grace doesn't mean what D does in modern English, I should have said I think it refers to that only in Christian contexts, 99% of the time in the set phrase "God's grace." Thus, I still think the use of "grace" is interpreting Kaworu's weird-ass word choices there as an attempt to sound Biblical, which is not evident from the original Japanese. I checked some Japanese bible verses (from whatever translation it is that's freely available online on random Christian websites) and they seem to generally translate "gratia" as or .

Otherwise, it's calling upon an archaic meaning that won't jump first to anyone's mind. If someone said "you're worthy of my grace" to me devoid of context I'd think they were asking me to watch their smooth dance moves. Admittedly, it's not supposed to be obvious what Kaworu means there and Shinji probably doesn't. I think the decision to make the line ambiguous isn't the awkward part.

"Worthy of my good graces" would have been OK. If I was the translator I might have gone with "worthy of favor" or something, so the meaning isn't unclear to watchers but Shinji's repetition can be interpreted as "why the fuck would you put it that way bro?"

As for the leftists thing, not sure how badly our wires got crossed there but I was referring to this. https://img.fireden.net/a/image/1561/68/1561683326861.jpg (Top is the new Netflix sub.)

I don't buy that "grace" in the sense of "goodwill" and "courtesy" as opposed to "elegance" or "divine favor" has fully become the Christianese sense of lately ("had the grace to admit", "grace and diplomacy", "her usual grace"). To humor the idea, though, MJB has D in Genesis 21:23 (NIV: kindness), 26:29 (treated you well), 29:31/33 (loved). I do think it's not a great pick, though.

I am not sure what word I would pick in English; I'd have stewed over it for weeks if it were my job, but only because I know it's long been a topic of discussion in the English NGE fandom (though I have nothing to do with it). I lean towards "care", as it fits both <treating a heart that is fragile like glass with kindness/affection> (handle with care) and <a mild, borderline-euphemistic term for having romantic feelings about someone> (I care for him). But the primary doubt I have is that it's a little too mild in the latter sense. Y'know, despite the next line going straight (ahem) from subtext to text.

On ZNg: Just to clarify, the primary meaning of it is "leftist faction", not "religious splinter". According to the script, it's a j[Xԑg, and without much other context to go on, it's safe to assume it's talking about radicals and not fanatics. ADV's reasons for dropping the word is probably brevity; it was their tendency. Also, the full line in the script continues not { but 펩ɂ铖̑|TvJ܂, so ADV's version of it ("and the government has passed new legislation to prevent another") probably was hastily / unavoidably kikitori'd or something.

Sorry, no clue as to what happened to neither mastro nor eizi 42th Japanese Old Boy. Ask on the IRC maybe, I'm sure someone there will know.

>I am returning to these boards after a prolonged absence and trying to uncover information surrounding past events.

Here's a short summary of some important stuff from post-2014:
The original SAoVQ died sometime late 2014, and was never fully archived, most of its content was lost forever. Capey revived SAoVQ at secretareaofvipquality.org.
Tablecat's lounge died sometime 2016 or 2017, only to be revived another short while and then die again. Both RedCream and Futuripastica went missing shortly before the first death.
World2ch.org died late 2018, after going down a few times, the wiki breaking, and being moved "temporarily" to espeon.info. 0037 probably masturbates to Shii to this very day. Partially archived at w2ch.14get.heliohost.org.
Tokiko ran a wiki for a while on 4x13.net, which filled with memes from #jp from irc.sageru.org, which was kind of fun until it also died.
/prog/rider also died sometime 2017, but was archived and revived on freesoftwarefoundation.org, which also features a full world4ch archive. There was some fun debating over the successor site, with goatfinger.ga being shat on repeatedly. There are still some somewhat dead /prog/s around right now.
Some other stuff happened as well, but this is most of the big site death stuff.

I for one am not at all against the introduction of new symbols to the written form of the English language, nor experimentation to improve its emotional expression, fitness to purpose, speediness, or (dis)ambiguative power.

This Frankenstein's Glyph, however, serves no such cause. May demons drag it back through the crack in the earth whence it came (may Allah forgive me for uttering its name): Madison Ave.

The interrobang does serve a cause, in situations like these it means you can use one character instead of two, and I'd argue it also has a slightly different emotional expression than using !?. Not that I'm arguing for its wider use, but it's not true to say it has no cause...

Yeah, the Kazakhstani government is overreaching but I don't see what Firefox gains by doing that. All it means is people will have to use a different browser and get their web browsing snooped on anyway.

There are presumably cases where developers or w/e would want to add their own certs for testing too, now they're being inconvenienced just so Mozilla can pretend they are more morally upright than their competitors somehow.

Web browser features don't oppress people, governments oppress people.

I can barely understand the dialog, and the laugh track sounds like some bizarre percussion device made from people's voice boxes.

yeah i know how that is. it's not just sitcoms for me, a lot of half-heard shit on TV is mildly disturbing to me. the worst, i think, is that mom watches a lot of korean dramas, the kind where people go ballistic, to reinforce her belief that it's okay to throw over-the-top adult tantrums because it's her culture. so i'm not just sensitive to that sort of conflict and yelling, but it keeps. fucking. happening.

I don't want to alarm you, but you're browsing a CGI-based website RIGHT NOW.
That aside, what exactly is the alternative even supposed to be? I don't know what you're going on about when you say they might "still" be using CGI in 2019. And comparatively, what's supposed to make it better?

With CGI you need a separate server (basically only Apache) to take http requests and format them for the script. It's also one OS process per request; even with mod_perl or mod_php it's still a thread per request. Heavy on server resources. But that doesn't matter for a forum with 3 users.

The alternative (socket bind + listen loop) can be much lighter and doesn't try to abstract away the concept of network sockets (reducing bug surface area). You get to take advantage of green threads and non-blocking IO. You also don't need a separate server unless you don't want to deal with HA or TLS yourself (and then you can just shove it behind nginx). You can use any language, too, basically, since all it needs is a handful of socket functions rather than an entire CGI library. Low OS resource usage per request also raises the bar for DoS attacks like slowloris.

TL;DR CGI works, sure, but the alternative is simpler and therefore faster and safer.

Eh, I'm not really sure of any, I feel like it's sort of folk knowledge now. Maybe there are some "CGI vs TCP socket" articles out there, I don't know.

If you want to try it yourself, I'm sure there are a few "simple TCP socket server" tutorials in your language of choice. Get to the stage where you can print out the incoming data, then point your browser at it to see what an http request looks like, and go from there.

The standard numerals drive me nuts. They're unwieldy to write. They have too many easily confused glyphs, which seems unreasonable considering they're a recombining set of ten, and a lot of shorthand systems don't touch 'em at all because they're already shorthand.

Not sure what to do except kvetch; this is something I simply haven't found a decent way around, and few seem to share my objections. Even conlangs that try to overdo simplicity rarely see a need to fuck with 'em.

Progress report from dumbass trying to fix my vision (myopia) "naturally"

Basically, yeah, it's possible. I'm not good to drive or anything--it's very back and forth throughout the day--but I think it'll get there within a few weeks, the rate things are going. I'm not sure which technique has really helped the most, except that the most dramatic improvement occurred after I started trying to frequently pay attention, using my peripheral vision, to well lit long range parallax effects and (in moderate doses) bright screens. It seems it stimulates some nerve cells towards some process I don't/can't have control over. Also, it's probably the safest thing I'm doing, too.

I try to cover all the bases, so in addition flexing ciliary muscle, using conscious control over the extraocular muscles to reshape the eye (probably a simultaneous tug on opposing recti from the feel of it, with some assistance from the eyelid, like a really hard squint), and stretching them so the range of motion doesn't feel imbalanced.

Unlike claims online that it's all in one thing or the other, I think the various parts of the eye exist the way they are in part because they adjust each other and maintain multiple equilibria, as far as shape is concerned. Even down to the springiness of the eyeball--it seems its natural resting shape/position can be adjusted somewhat by what I'm doing. Binocular vision also helps one eye tell that it's not seeing clearly sometimes, so now and then I can "walk back" the range of depth by squinching the eyes alternately.

Bonus: I figured out how to have a weak orgasm just by thinking about it during this time... odd benefit to trying to find obscure muscles most people don't bother with.

I was just watching pre-Code cartoons on a whim and wow, okay, I guess there'd be plenty of people willing to go moral crusader on that even today.
