old games that SHOULD have a remake (270)

1 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2006-09-04 00:13 ID:saZ2CZH8

We all know that lately game companies are running out of/too lazy to come up with original ideas for games and have been chugging remakes and sequels.

I say they should remake Super Smash TV

final fantasy 7!

3 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2006-09-04 12:50 ID:FIka8bwd

FF7 is great as it is. any remake would just destroy it.

4 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2006-09-04 13:37 ID:cFw5h1xT

Yeah, there is a probability.
But did you see remake of FF7 opening on PS3? It’s awesome!

Geometry Wars? Granted it's not the same but it's a similar move with one stick shoot with the other setup.

6 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2006-09-05 08:17 ID:Hxax58PU

Apparently Square-Enix said that to remake FF7 on PS3 would take too long and cost too much for it to be even remotely worthwhile. That worries me, though.

A huge company like SE can't afford to remake FF7, which is guaranteed to sell millions worldwide, and has already been made once - they don't need to worry about design, story, characters, battle system etc, just new pretty graphics.

So it seems like no company will ever be able to produce a PS3 game with FF7's scope unless they ignore next-gen graphics and make it look like a PS2 game. Which is fine by me, but it'd never fly in the current market.

7 Name: 3 : 2006-09-05 14:52 ID:FIka8bwd

I wonder why they can't afford it. I mean, there already are Chara Designs and a Story etc. It cant be much more expensive than a completely new Game / Sequel?
Still, i love the PS Part <3

That suprises me, I would've thought it would be obvious, I can't see how it wouldn't be incredably successful. Just look at how well FF3 on DS is doing in Japan. FF7 is a big game but I don't think its really that much bigger than any of the others.

I can't remember S-E saying anything about it, do you have a source?

i don't have a source, just vague drunken memories. feel free to google and prove me right or wrong.

FF7 for the PS3 i hope that square-enix will remake it, its gonna be a huge hit for sure.. same goes with the FFI-FFVI..

11 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2006-09-10 18:36 ID:0mztcjIY

SE should really consider remaking FF1-6. personally i have never gotten the chance to play either of them. that is probably why i would like to experience the story with more up to date graphics

12 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2006-09-11 12:39 ID:FIka8bwd

so, whats your understanding of a remake?

FF6 (SFC) -> rereleased on PSX and GBA
FF5 (SFC) -> rereleased on PSX and GBA
FF4 (SFC) -> rereleased on PSX, GBA and WSC
FF3 (FC) -> rereleased on DS, PSX, SNES and WSC
FF2 (FC) -> rereleased on GBA, PSX, SNES and WSC
FF1 (FC) -> rereleased on GBA

how much more do you need?
do you need 3D Graphics? Many people say 3D sucks. Just go play the Psx/Snes/Gba versions. these have 16 Bit (like) graphics and that should be really enough to enjoy them.

13 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2006-09-11 14:59 ID:Hxax58PU

>>12

> FF3 (FC) -> rereleased on DS, PSX, SNES and WSC

wait... what? The WSC version was cancelled, and that's the first I've heard of a SNES or PSX release. It's pretty famous for being the only FF game that was never remade until the DS version.

14 Name: 12 : 2006-09-13 13:10 ID:FIka8bwd

hmm.. i have stolen that infos from Gamefaqs.com
as experienced before there is a lot of incorrect data on that site. so it might have never been released. you should not trut my post then ;)

15 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2006-09-13 18:55 ID:FddBfDu4

Other than FF1-3, those are essentially ports, not remakes.

> do you need 3D Graphics? Many people say 3D sucks. Just go play the Psx/Snes/Gba versions. these have 16 Bit (like) graphics and that should be really enough to enjoy them.

Because of the types of games they are they could be improved by 3D graphics and FMVs. The one or two FMVs in the PSX versions don't count. No one wants to play the same games again with hardly any changes.

This thread is about old games, and you bring up this console shit? Dear lord. Says a lot about the lot of you.

Anyway, I'd like to see a remake of the old Melbourne House text adventure (aka interactive fiction) game Kwah. Old crusties like me will remember it, it's the one with the three-squares-at-a-time comic book style visualization thing for the C64, with the main character being a superman-style ordinary nerd with a Secret Superhero Identity as Redhawk.

Well, actually I'd just like to see the comic book "paradigm" go somewhere else than the cheesy-ass visual novel sequences in the Max Payne games. Pretty, rendered comic book representations of the player's progress through a 3D jump'n'run game for instance.

I think the entire text adventure genre is due for a resurgence. Granted, it's a niche genre, and nothing would sell all that well, but it'd be great to see people like Neil Gaiman tackle the genre. Sort of how Douglas Adams cooperated in writing the HGTTG game.

Skies of Arcadia is recent enough that a remake would be mostly pointless - all it'd add is extra polygons, higher resolution, better textures and a few flashy effects. Far as I'm concerned a remake would only be worthwhile from PS1 era or earlier, because PS1-era 3D is balls-ugly by today's standards. PS2/Dreamcast 3D still holds up reasonably well.

Heh, graphically clunky? Frankly, being in 3D allowed Square to tell that story in a way that couldn't be done on the SNES. And face it, nearly every game up to and beyond FFVII was "graphically clunky" to a fault. it's just how games were back then. But look on the bright side. ... They (gaming industry as a whole) did get better about it. Does FFVII need a remake? Of course not. What could a remake to a modern game like that do that would enhance it? I think Final Fantasy VII would really do well from a graphical update, since most players these days would find it hard to play this game as its graphics are so bad now.

112 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2007-09-14 14:53 ID:Heaven

Isn't FF just a few hours of FMV with a few minutes of gameplay? And perhaps 10 seconds of unique gameplay, which is to say that once you've seen one menu you've seen them all.

>>112
Heh, a few hours of Square's FMV would be fantastic, they really are skilled about it. But alas, that's not the case. I think in the FFs I've played, there probably isn't more than a half hour's worth of actual FMV to watch, though there's tons of cutscenes. And menu-based combat is old like you suggest, but Square does change it up every game as of late, to keep it from getting boring. FF7 had the Limit Breaks and the materia system, FF8 had that Draw system, and so on. Personally, FF has never been about the gameplay in the first place.

One thing is sure, we all dreamed of fighting along with Sephiroth. Now we can!

>>117

it's called Crisis Core, I think it's out in Japan, but not the US. And you don't get Sephiroth, you play as the Turks -- Reno and Rude.

>>109

I think FF7 as well as a lot of other games got more credit than they deserve because they were 3D. FF7 wasn't all that. After you leave Midgar, 80% of the quests were "Hey dumbass, Sephiroth went thataway!" "ZOMG We have to get Sephiroth". That isn't a mindblowing story. Shinra and the Turks were much more interesting, but they were dropped for the most part after the first 5 hours.

The cast of characters were pretty bad.

I don't see what everybody likes Aeris for. She's one of those sickeningly sweet characters that have no thoughts of their own. She existed to be cute, and if Sephy hadn't killed her, I think I'd have wanted to. Josef (FF2j), Tellah (FF4), and General Leo (FF6) were better. They had actual thoughts and opinions, they had a reason for being around.

Barret came off like a Stormfag's wetdream -- a jive-talking dumbass negro stereotype with questionable parenting skills (Hey 4-year old Marlene, watch my bar. I'll be back... someday), poor self-control, and a gun welded to his arm. Way to go Square.

Tifa had no personality, and neither did Cloud. They had a nice little acid trip backstory, but even then, Cloud just never seems to have a personality. He doesn't seem too upset to find out his life is a lie. He's pretty matter-of-fact even after his supposed girlfriend is stabbed through the heart.

I never said that you play Sephiroth, I heard that you fight along with Sephiroth as Zack. But anyway a friend told me that, so I guess you know better.

As for all the rest. I kind of agree with you but I also think that you have a prejudice for FF7. Yes FF7 was one of the first "3D" and it also had those FMV videos (I am not sure about the name) I also think that FF7 became so popular because it was one of the first rpgs all those people ever played. Usually the first thing you play you get attached to it. Furthermore, FF7 may not had the most interesting cast of characters but it definately had fun gameplay because of the awesome materia system and the battles, which also was so different of the repetitive class system the previous had. Anyway FF7 was great and there is no doubt about it.

> 3D allowed Square to tell that story in a way that couldn't be done on the SNES.

It wasn't actually in 3D (besides the over world), that's was just marketing. The backgrounds were all low-res pictures.
There is nothing that couldn't have been done just as well on the SNES, besides FMV. Why was it on the PS? Exclusivity.
>>113

What was FF: Spirits Within? Besides a financial failure.

That linear goose chase is what bothered me the most. So dull, but at least it ended before the game did.

I hated it and it pushed me over the edge in my opinion of the game. I'd rather build a character's strengths, not a green orb's.

Of course I knew that most of the game had rendered backgrounds. But you could also move across a z-axis in those environment. The SNES had it's sprite scaling and all, but if they tried that with FF7, and their dynamic angles and areas, it would've looked awful.

You actually missed the point of my "A few hours of FMV would be fantastic" bit. >>112 had suggested that the games consisted of several hours of FMV, when there's really only a little bit. I was merely suggesting that'd be nice if that were the case. But since you brought up Spirits Within, I will say that I thought it was an awful movie, but damn it looked gorgeous. Seriously, Square's CGI team rivals Pixar in terms of technical prowess, and that movie proved it.

125 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2007-10-04 02:37 ID:S5EqvrVs

>>124

True, but I think the FMVs miss the point entirely. I'm playing a game, not watching a movie. And the sad thing about SE's FMV team is that it takes away from other aspects of the game.

FF10 was pretty much a movie. A decent movie, but the gameplay was dumbed down to the point where you walked down straight line roads and mashed X. If you took away all the "shiney things" in FF10, it would be a shit game. No real challenge, it's practically impossible to explore or get lost. If FFX had been released as a 32-bit SNES title, SE would have failed.

Games should not be turned into movies. A good story is important, but remember that the player is buying a game to play not watch. I want to explore a huge cave, slay a few dragons. I want to feel like I'm the hero. I don't want to set my controller down for hours while I watch a movie.

Alright, for the record, What I was saying was that the FF games, while they have their fare share of cutscenes, had very small amounts FMV in it. In fact, having just completed FFX, I can't think of any scene where I wasn't playing anything for more than 5 minutes that didn't involve the ending.

I'll agree that FFX was a little too easy though. The team switching mid battle didn't have a lot of opportunities to be really taken advantage of in the main game, though the sidequests kept it interesting.

Honestly though, there's very few games these days that wouldn't be a "shit game" without it's shiny bits.

Axelay and Einhander should have a remake. If not that, then at least a shooter with a similiar play style to either. Weapon switching, screen scrolling in other directions besides "forward".

Also, there should be a graphically updated Monster Party. Though, with how censorship in some countries are nowadays, it would be toned down or otherwise banned.

Kirby Super Star. Needs updated (not necessarily 3D) graphics and online mode so you/your friends can play as a helper. I haven't had more fun in a single Kirby game between Revenge of Metaknight, Great Cave Offensive, and Milky Way Wishes. Actually, I did have more fun, when I played through the game again with a friend over ZSNES's netplay.

As for the people who are going on about a Chrono Trigger update/remake, how about asking for another sequel instead! I liked Chrono Cross almost as much as Chrono Trigger, I can only imagine how awesome Chrono-style time travelling/parallel universes/what-have-you would be with current-gen graphics.

I mean, as long as Tetsuya Nomura wasn't involved or at least discreet about character design and avoiding over-the-topness. I liked FF8 and then every other game he's chara designed for since has just been FF8 character parodies.

j/k, i tend to agree. I can see from their standpoint, though, that new games these days cost a metric f-ton of money to make, and they probably won't even get it back with the massive graphics expectations as they are. Basically, we want them to make a lord of the rings trilogy on the budget of a Uwe Boll film. So, they do the next best thing and dally about our nostalgia factor (not to mention re-introduce their tried and true franchises to the new gamers).

at least, that's how I see it.

There should be a decent Doom remake. While I'm a aware that Doom 3 was essentially a remake, well, it's essence was anything but lost.

games like Serious Sam, Will Rock and Painkiller have tried (Painkiller being the closest and better of the bunch), but it would be fantastic to have all the creeps we saw in Doom like they were in Doom: Dumb, by the millions and weak, so we can pwn their asses. Just that this time, in glorious parallax-mapped 3D.

But that's a minor wish. I guess in the current times, that kind of gameplay wouldn't succeed.

So, i'm gonna stick with a remake of either the System Shock series, Deus Ex series or Quake 1.

A Quake remake has all the potential to be REAL creepy ^^

How can you say it has magic, then call it retarded in the same sentence? If you want to make a point, at least have 2% the understanding of a normal person would normally have when speaking. Another reason you appear stupid is because if you want to say "no" multiple times, at least put an odd number of them, because an even number of "no"s equates out to a "yes."

Besides, from their point of view, making remakes gets them cash. I would be willing to spend cash on the remake, hell I would buy it for $200. There are many fans like me, so for them the only problem would be the time it takes to actually remake such an amazing game.

I agree, There has been a lot of DS remakes of the classic Final Fantasy games for the DS, and FFVI was probably the best Final Fantasy of all time, I'm definately looking forward to seeing how that turns out. But I do hope they retain those moments from the original that were omitted or changed in the GBA version. :)

212 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2009-01-07 20:25 ID:zlOdjpya

>>211

They didn't actually change anything that affects gameplay. But I heard there were a few scenes which were edited, I guess to make it more appropriate. When you first see the character Shadow, there was a quote that went something like "He'd slit his own mother's throat for a nickel." This was removed in the GBA version, but I think it was a great line and should have been left in.

I just didn't like it. I thought it was "meh". This comes from someone who LOVED the VI. And seeing people blabbering about FFVII all day long when it was, well, "mostly okay", made me hate it. Also OLOL FFVII IS THE FIRST FF BECUZ THE PLAYSTATION IS THE FIRST CONSOLE EVER AMIRITE? Fucking all great-public-marketing and console starting to mix with computer games (not in the right way) started at that time.

FFVII had the materia system for it, and that's about it. It wasn't that great. Get over it. FFVIII, however cliche'd and short it was, had better writing and a more interesting universe.

214 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2009-01-08 12:34 ID:zlOdjpya

>>213

You're right that FFVII is kind of over-hyped. Despite that it was a good game. It had a really engaging story, great characters, and of course the gameplay and graphics was revolutionary. Credit where it is deserved, y'know?

FFVIII was good, and original (first time to ever try portray photo-realistic humans in a RPG, I believe), but for whatever reason, albeit the confusing plot or the junction system, it just wasn't popular, and only in recent years have people come to realise what a great game it was.

And, I see what your getting at with that little "FFVII IS THE FIRST FF BUCUZ..." thing, but for alot of people it was the first game, Europe didn't get any FF games until VII came along, because Square just didn't see it as being profitable to release those earlier RPGs.

215 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2009-01-08 15:26 ID:0NeToL1R

>>213-214 I suppose I can see your points of view about the game. It can be really annoying when you come accross ignorance, especially about your favourite series or pasttime. FFVII did make a lot of great leaps for the series, including upped production values, more modern settings, magic customization, a plot Hideo Kojima could have written, etc... But it did lack some things that made VI great, like that fantastic 20 minute ending.

(yeah, i'd have been pissed if I'd seen some fav lines taken out of a remake, >>212 . They left "You spoony bard!" in IV for just that reason.)

I like VIII, more than I did when I first played it, but You have to admit the plot of "LOL, I FORGOT EVERYTHING THAT IS IMPORTANT UNTIL AFTER IT BECOMES RELEVANT FOR SHOCK VALUE" is a little contrived. I mean, you don't learn why radio transmissions don't work until the end of the game - AND ANY JERK OFF THE STREET COULD HAVE OLD YOU.

218 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2009-03-21 08:18 ID:B4DhtD1B

I did like FFVIII and except the remake of the dance scene for the PS2, nothing else was made from FFVIII. Nonetheless, I'd say a remake of FFVIII would be worth trying although I HATE the damn junction system especially for stocking magic. Sure, Refining magic out of items is cool and quick but nonetheless, it was a pain to refill the spells to keep your stats high sometimes by the DRAW command, also, the object that were not available (except cheat) through pocketstation would have been great to have in the PS1 version although on my PC version, i can get those with no great hassle.

Also, Ultimecia's background should have been MUCH MUCH more integrated and develloped instead of a LOLOLOLOLOL I'M EVIL AND I POSSESS PEOPLE LOLOL. I would have truly enjoy seeing the R=U theory in the game. That would have been IMO a great twist in the plot with all the time paradoxes and all...

tl;dr, I'd give a shot for the remake of FFVIII, let alone an animation movie to see how thing would turn out. (Yes, I did saw Dead Fantasy)

>>218
I highly suggest you read the Faq on Time/Ultimecia on GameFAQs. It makes a lot of sense, and in fact, you'd see that Ultimecia has a background, mostly through Edea. Even though I'm all for tragedies and such, the R=U theory just doesn't sound like a good idea to me. I'm replaying the game right now, and I did pick some things up... but there are a lot of more subtle stuff happening that you might miss on your first play, although it's all under your eyes.

Simply put: Ultimecia know what is going to happen all along (events from the past from her POV, so probably well documented in the future), but she stills has no choice but try to escape her fate; in doing so, she dooms herself.

>>215
FFVII didn't bring "upped production values". The fact that it had cinematics and 3D is more likely the result of it being on a new and more powerful system, isn't it? FFVI was quite huge for a SNES game, on a production point of view. It had the materia system - which is great - but customisation already was in FFs (job system? espers?). The modern setting... well the Empire in VI was quite modern already (they have mechas, tanks, trains...), and also in older titles. FF since a long time have incoporated at least some steampunk elements.

And nope, nobody could have told you about the radio waves except in Esthar, but they basically removed themselves from the face of the world. They are the ones who disrupted radio waves to prevent Adel from communicating with the outside. Also, the static in the TV screen in Timber.. if you're attentive, you can guess that it is related to something evil ("Bring me back I am alive I will never let you forget me", quite creepy), especially if you noticed that the dates the radios stopped working and the end of the second Witch War match.

The only bad writing in this game in my opinion is the fact that the TC happens way too fast and abruptly. I liked the orphanage part. But I agree that this is merely opinion.

Okay, let's stop the derailing on FFVIII and my rants on FFVII, okay?

Back to topic: I wish Sonic 3 & Knuckles (when you comboed the cartridges) had a remake, KEEPING IT A 2D scroller as Sonic games should have stayed, with classic Sonic characters and storyline, but with improved graphics with all the modern effect and image post-treatment our modern systems can do. Maybe incorporating characters in a 3D/2D way, as seen on New SMB on DS. Basically a lifting of the game. No change to the awesome level design.

As much as I love the Wild ARMs series, the first one really really sucked in my opinion. It has nothing to do with the graphics, I can play games with bad graphics. I can't even remember why I didn't like the game, I just remember hating it to no end.

However, for some reason I believe that had I played the remake instead, I probably would haveenjoyed it more. I personally haven't played Alter Code F, but something about it makes me want to play it, despite hating the original.

...Well, sometimes moving from place to place might not have been obvious, but the overall story should have been pretty easy to figure out.

Anyway, I would like a remake for Earthbound as well, but I'm afraid that it might lose it's charm. - especially considering that they can't even release it to VC because of all the songs/references/audio samples they didn't pay for and don't want to get sued for NOW in this litigious society.

Ever played Age of Wonder? It had similar gameplay, and is considered a sort of spiritual sequel by fans.

Lords of Magic was of similar vein, though the combat system was more of a RTS system.

And Disciples is similar, except its battle which is more RPG based.

Each of the games I listed are fun, but yeah, a real honest-to-goodness remake of Master of Magic would definitely be fuckwin!

AoW II was an awesome game and is still located on my hard drive to this day. It featured "parallel turn mode" for LAN multiplayer, which was at the same time hilarious, strategic and fun. Basically it was still turn-based except all the turns happened at once, and the first to react were the first served, so you had to pick in which order you'd give your orders VERY carefully. I once had a battle of portal locks/dispels until mana exhaustion so the guy couldn't come out of the dark world with his gazillion troops stocked one portal and 6 squares away from my main town. Then I managed to smuggle an upgraded dragon across the ocean and burnt 4 of his main cities before he could even react. One of my best memories of multiplayer games of that style, and I'm a huge HoMM fan.

It has awful AI. And that's a HUGE problem considering that it's such a huge part of the game (it is squad based after all... if it was just a solo shooter, like halo, it wouldn't really matter to me, but in R6 you kinda need good friendly AI).

UBI Just fucked it all up. And they made it so hard to mod, there's barely any community for the game (R63 would have been massively improved by the mod community if Ubi hadn't taken a dump on UE2).
