I have a question - (forgive me, i am t3h new) but once you have fairly well defined boundaries, why can't you fill your opponent's areas with singular groups, making him surround them with four (optimally) new stones, thus depriving him of 2 points?

I guess I ask, since a friend of mine that I play with - we have a hard time with life and death so we just resolve everything. this usually ends up us being jerks and filling in the opponent's side like i said above. example:

..xo..... x = black boundary
..xoo.... o = white boundary
..xxo....
...xo....
...xo....
...xxxo..
.....xo..
...xxxo..
...xooo..

white = 29 + 6.5 = 35.5
black = 26

turns into this: (note that i leave caputred pieces there for demonstration)

x.xooxoo. x = black boundary
oxxooooxo o = white boundary
xxxxo.oo.
xoxxooxoo
xx.xo.oox
oxxxxxooo
xxox.xoxo
.xxxxxooo
xoxxoooox

white = 10 + 6.5 + 6 = 22.5
black = 4 + 5 = 9

this results in lower scores and a higher difference in scores.

so, please commence explaining to me my foolishness.

I think you want the wakamark code modifier for that.

I think it's 4 spaces at the start of each line.

Another test

..xo..... x = black boundary
..xoo.... o = white boundary
..xxo....
...xo....
...xo....
...xxxo..
.....xo..
...xxxo..
...xooo..

white = 29 + 6.5 = 35.5
black = 26

turns into this: (note that i leave caputred pieces there for demonstration)

x.xooxoo. x = black boundary
oxxooooxo o = white boundary
xxxxo.oo.
xoxxooxoo
xx.xo.oox
oxxxxxooo
xxox.xoxo
.xxxxxooo
xoxxoooox

white = 10 + 6.5 + 6 = 22.5
black = 4 + 5 = 9

You don't have to surround his pieces so gradually like that.
If black goes here:

      ___there
V
..xo.x...
..xoo....
..xxo....
...xo....
...xo*...
...xxxo.. <--
.....xo.. <--
...xxxo.. <--
...xooo..

You don't have to do anything. He hasn't threatened you in any way, and there's no way for you to gain more territory, so you might as well pass. So long as you can connect to the right side of the board at one of those places I'm pointing, you can still make two eyes and insure that your wall is indestructable. Also, the point I marked with a star is an area where black could cut your wall and start invading your territory, perhaps even trying to capture your pieces.

Basically, if you have a big territory like that well defined, don't respond unless he threatens your ability to make eyes. He's just giving you free points. A black stone played where I put a black stone up there would be considered "dead" and give you an extra point.
