These games are addicting like hell. I mean, seriously, is there a free vial of crack and a needle full of heroin secretly hidden in each disk?

Not as addicting as the doujinshi it inspires. :3

Don't sweat it, it took me around 150 tries to 1cc PCB easy (with Sakuya-A.)
The most critical things to do at that skill level are developing deathbomb reflexes, and getting the hang of stage 4.

Sometimes I can make it past Alice without losing a life. I tend to get caught by the half-ghost girl when she shoots out those ribbon patterns in the middle of the yellow and green balls. So hard to tell where those things are going.

Funny, I always found Alice a cakewalk. The catgirl on stage 2 kills me far more often then she does.

> I tend to get caught by the half-ghost girl when she shoots out those ribbon patterns in the middle of the yellow and green balls.

Youmu's normals are a bitch. I tend to just bomb through them.

What the shit is a 1cc. I keep reading it everywhere. 1cc'ed this, or that. 1 credit-something, that I heared, but what? You completed the game with a continue?

One credit clear, i.e., beating the game without continuing.

Hey, >>24 here, I finally finished easy mode with Reimu A on my last life in my last continue. Bad end, natch. ;_; The last boss was kind of confusing, it took me a minute to realize the pink things were cherry points and not bullets. Wasted a lot of bombs. Oh man, the last patterns were so fast I could barely think. Should I go for the 1cc or move on to normal?

>The catgirl on stage 2 kills me far more often then she does.

The only tough part for me is the card with red bullets turning into white ones. I find it's easy if I try to maneuver above as many red ones as I can before they change but that means sometimes the clock runs out on me and I fail the capture.

I have bought every Touhou PC game except StB, but IN's the only one I've managed to beat. On easy. With a couple of continues. I fucking love STGs, but have never 1cc'd any, despite having played those games for almost a year. :( Some people are hopless, huh?

A Cave employee on the topic of Progear, said that a horizontal shooter simply can't measure up to a good vertical one. Also according ti him, this is because you aren't able to see properly if you are in the path of a bullet, as is possible in vertical games at all times. As >>38 said, try one for yourself, like Progear.

43 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2007-10-19 21:28 ID:Iv8vb+Fu

>>42
I don't understand this reasoning.
My monitor is 33% wider horizontally than it is vertically. I've never seen one that wasn't at this aspect ratio or wider.

(I'd prefer a vertical shooter for top-down aesthetics, but I don't find this reasoning satisfactory)

44 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2007-10-20 06:06 ID:KtZqTUuS

>>43
Go play Progear and compare it to a vertical shmup. You'll see the difference!!

Don't feel bad. I've been beating my ahead against the wall trying to beat PCB on normal without continues. My best so far is 2 continues, both of which were used on the last stage.

The best advice I ever saw for those trying to get good at Touhou games is this: don't cut your teeth on Imperishable Night. If you absolutely have to (i.e. you cant get your hands on EoSD or PCB) then for the love of god don't use Reimu/Yukari. Reimu's border of life and death (the time between getting hit and dying where you can use a bomb to save yourself) is so long that you can nail it in your sleep. This will completely destroy your ability to use bombs effectively since you get into the mind set of "I'll just pop one if I get hit" and think you're invincible as long as you've got a bomb left.

I made the mistake of learning the ropes with Reimu in IN, and I'm still trying to unlearn the bad habit of holding onto my bombs like a miser and coveting each one like its The One Ring. Bombs are not rare commodities, frikin use them.

>>39,43

It's pretty difficult to explain how differently your brain processes information in horizontal and vertical games. That's why >>44 recommanded you try Progear.
For heavy STG players, the difference is self-evident - it's almost as if you asked "what's the difference between first- and third-person shooters? in the end you just have to run, aim and shoot stuff".

Now I have no idea whether the difference is mostly cultural, or if the horizontal perspective is actually harder to process, but what is certain is that the skills acquired in vertical games don't transfer to horizontal games, as Progear makes brutally evident.

I just got PCB with the English translation patch.
Is there a way to change the control scheme? Other shmups I've played like warning forever let me use a mouse/gamepad.
I see a controls menu in PCB, but I can't seem to change anything, and it doesn't list any buttons, just the actions that are bound to some button.

52 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2007-11-01 13:09 ID:2J9tPz00

>>51
Well, you can use gamepads. I've played with both Xbox and PS2 controllers, plus some generic HK USB crap. Don't know about keyboard remapping though, probably doesn't work. Neither does the mouse.

53 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2007-11-02 00:27 ID:x/pTaOH4

Most gamepads come with software that allows mapping of buttons to keyboard keys. There are also some third-party software to fill that function. You'll never get Tohou to work with a mouse though, not without a heck of a lot of buttons on it.

54 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2007-11-02 01:28 ID:XcTBCTX0

You don't want to play shmups with a mouse.

The only advice I have is a general suggestion that works on everything: she aims her barrages at you (particularly Master Spark) so let this work for you. For example, while Marisa's charging up the Master Spark, move to the edge of the screen, and get as far up the screen as possible. This way, after she fires it, most of the beam will be safely offscreen and out of your way. This leaves you as much room as possible to dodge the other crap flying at you.

Basically, think of a spellcard as a dance between you and the boss. You want to be the one leading. Not the other way around. Make the bullets go where you want them to go. This makes things much easier.

I have a question, should anybody have suggestions. Which of the Touhou series is best for a complete novice to curtain shooters to start out on? I've never even played any vertical shooting games, but want to try, so could anybody give me suggestions, please?

75 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2008-02-08 22:28 ID:qPhu7PKk

Most of them are reasonably easy in easy mode. I think the most recent one, Mountain of Faith, should be pretty beginner-friendly.

76 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2008-02-08 22:31 ID:qPhu7PKk

Oh yeah, and don't forget, those games are strongly rooted in the arcade mentality. You are supposed to get assraped after just a few levels, and if you try to continue beyond this point instead of training, you'll just lose lives after lives. People who don't get that rarely enjoy those games.

Thanks for the suggestions. I gave it a shot, been playing for an hour, I can now get to the final boss with 2 lives left on easy but of course then I get owned. I have to admit this is incredibly fun if not VERY challenging, and the graphics+music are awesome. A shame I hadn't tried playing these earlier! Just gotta' keep practicing now [and read up on strategies], some of those screenshots of harder modes look very intimidating!

It's not that hard actually. Worked up from 1cc'ing Imperishable Night on EASY MODE to Normal, then bashed my head until I got my extra stage completion to somewhere in the 95-ish%, took a break from that and went straight to normal PCB. The fucker took me only five tries, but those five tries mentally and physically DRAINED me in the process. Haven't touched a Touhou game in a week now, I'll try it again this weekend.

I finally 1cc'd IN on easy last week. For me, it's an accomplishment. Now I need to start trying normal, and hope it doesn't crush my soul too brutally. Until I can do that, I'm not touching PCB or MoF again...the final bosses just destroy me. I can have 7 lives and still fail miserably.

The full version of SWR will be released at Reitaisai on May 25. However, only the demo of Touhou 11 will be released then. The full version will be released at Comic Market in August.

Spell Practice is your friend while playing IN. Repeat the spells that give you trouble until you can do them with your eyes closed. Then you will be able to breeze through the main game.

IN's Spell practice is quite darn useful, since it also improves your general "dodge that shit"-skills. 1cc'ing PCB on normal feels easier than the same with IN for me, by the way.

96 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2008-05-25 18:35 ID:XmOO7Fs7

So, thoughts on the new games?

SA is okay. Horrible portrait art, but what were we expecting? The youkai partner option is neat, unfortunately all of them suck except Reimu/Yukari and Marisa/Alice. Stages are entertaining enough and look & feel different from any other Touhou game, though they don't set as much as a mood as PCB's did. The game has a ways to go before it achieves PCB's sheer awesome or IN's polish, but it's looking better than MoF, I think.

Can't say much about SRW because I suck at fighting games. Nice roster, the new characters are interesting but that's about it.

I have an annoying feeling of certainty that none of the things wrong with SA (except the invincibility glitch... maybe) will get fixed before the full version, though, because nothing in MoF was. ZUN is really overworking himself, I think. He should start giving himself 2 years for each game and they'd probably turn out really incredible.

97 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2008-05-25 20:41 ID:Heaven

zun cant live on air.

also

SA to me feels interesting lol the stages are very easy almost MoF easy no challange whatsoever
but the bossfights are hard[compared to MoF,IN,even PCB]
the second boss with the follow^you^around attack that u have to avoid for a couple of seconds[then it restarts] AND ITS ONLY THE SECOND BOSS
no other TH game have had such a hard second boss
i dont like the youkai help thing
why not do it all out IN instead

SWR
i get the feeling its not complete
i cant put my finger on it but ...i dont know ...something feels off
and it was not very hard
SWR story mode i 1ccd on my first try with sakuya[normal]
IaMP story mode is ALOT harder i think

98 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2008-05-26 00:53 ID:XmOO7Fs7

> zun cant live on air.

ZUN probably doesn't make much money from selling $10 games. However, he could be rolling in money if he wanted to sell out. (like Higurashi has to a certain extent)

Besides, I think he still has a job.

99 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2008-05-26 11:21 ID:Heaven

do you think he make SSiB for free?

also
he probably sell LOTS of games and music at comiket and reitaisai[thats 3 times a year he can pull in huge amount of cash for his items]
lots and lots of japanese ppl are interested in his games and music
[im not saying he lives like a king but i think he is doing ok]

i dont think he can have a ^real^ job
he have to make chapters for his SSiB every month
he release games every year now
and im guesing he puts down alot of time creating the music for the games

100 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2008-05-27 21:39 ID:Heaven

after playing SWR some more
i have to say
BAH
its too short
takes around 15min tops to beat story mode[depending on how crappy ur char is lol]
and there are no HARD fights
i was very dissapointed with Tenshi
she is...easy...most of her attacks are VERY obvious like the stomp shit bah
compare her to Suika from IaMP and its a sad joke almost
even Suika in SWR is easy

I'm really enjoying SA. My main impression after playing it for a bit is "this is what MOF should have been". I'm just hoping the final boss is some kind of blind mole-loli with big thick glasses. Her meganekko power would be maximum.

SA is as hard as EoSD
ok ok cirno is not as hard as the second boss in SA but
meilin and the 3rd one of SA are about the same

and i agree with>>97 the stages suck
i hope zun try and make hard stages again like his pc98 games and EoSD

The SA bosses seem to be of the "Get assraped, figure out the trick, then become the one handing out the assrape every time" kind.
I don't like those. In the previous games (and most STG I like) patterns are always long-term challenges, that you can theoretically get right on your fist try, but that don't become pushovers once you've nailed them down.

623B/C: as long as the enemy is inside the bubble, you can graze enemy projectiles without dashing/flying

thrown green potion: releases a gas that poisons your opponent (i think)
drunk green potion: increases attack/defense by 20% for 10 seconds
