There are a bunch of free, so-so MMOs (mostly Korean). I play WoW myself, but those are a good distraction :)

how much memory does the Shaiya client take up? and is it safe, + mac friendly?

Do you play the official server or the private ones?

The thing about playing MMO is more or less to join a party and be active in guild; for me who already failed in real life social, this kind of interaction gives me comfort.
