Strategy RPGs for DS (16)

i tried out Rondo of Swords today, had a go on the tutorial, and i thought... well, it has a sort of interesting gimmick, but these are some horribly generic characters aren't they? my brief foray into story mode didn't do much to change my mind before i had to give the cart back.

so, i mean, are there any decent ones, in english, with a reasonably interesting, original story and characters? i'm not after a masterpiece or anything, just something better than Luminous Arc for christ's sake.

further to the above post, pretty much i want something that isn't set in a generic fantasy-pseudo-mediaeval world. and if that really isn't an option, at least something where i'm not saving a princess, preventing something from destroying the world, preventing the world from destroying itself, overthrowing a corrupt/evil king or church official, or collecting seven of something. and a main character who isn't a teenage knight accompanied by a female magician who refers to herself in the third person... that would be nice as well.

actually, fuck it, i'm going to expand that beyond the DS, i'm really jonesing for a good strategy rpg at the moment. so yeah anything on the DS, PS1, PS2, GBA, or any reasonably well emulated console prior to that (SNES/MD/NES/GB etc), as long as its in english (fan translations acceptable) and fulfils the above criteria. and don't say disgaea, i've played that.

oh yeah AND if it's for the PS2 it has to have been released in PAL format and not be insanely expensive/difficult to get hold of now, because my PS2 isn't modded.

front mission series
super robot wars series

only those two come to mind... a lot of older "classic" SRPGs really are rather bland in terms of plot. it took nippon ichi to break the mold, and they're pretty much the only ones who make SRPGs these days outside the long-running series, too. (i take it you've played every game by them, and not just disgaea? though the others may not have gotten an european release)

actually i haven't played the other nippon ichi games apart from disgaea 1 and 2, i was under the impression that the pal versions are ridiculous expensive (especially makai kingdom, which is the one i'd probably get first). but i just looked on ebay, and it turns out they're quite reasonably priced. so. awesome!

i'll check out super robot wars as well, never played one of those.

yeah but

> in japan

i'm sure it'll come out in the US and Europe eventually, but i'd like to play it in a language i understand.

They should make a Heroes of Might and Magic game for the DS. That would kick ass.

Is Advance Wars too obvious? :)
You could try the latest Yu-Gi-Oh. CCGs have lots of good strategic thinking.

FFIII and FFCC Ring of Fates are good. Highly advise Advance Wars Dark Cronicle. Front Mission on DS is nice too. Also you might like the Summon Night games on DS and GBA. There are hundreds of good rpgs out there. Those are just an example and what came to mind first when I though handheld.

Yeah, FRONT MISSION is pretty cheap right now.

I've played a few Front Mission games and all have been worthy of my time. ^_^

You should try (a few hours and you'll know if you like it or not) of Hoshigami Remix.
It is NOT for everyone.
But for the people who it is for... love it.
