From >>1's link
He decided to conduct his experiment at the peak of Mt. Bernina, which happened to be the location of his very tragic death. He set up camp at the top of the mountain for a whole week awaiting the perfect wind conditions, and when he was provided with them, he decided to get as close to the edge as possible to further the flgiht distance of the plane. However a sudden gust of wind caused Augustus to lose his balance and he then plummeted to his death. Many days passed before anyone actually reported him missing, however, when when his camp was located, he was nowhere to be found, and to this very day, his body has never been found.

I think his plane was really a wonderful craft, and the gust of wind flew it way above the clouds, with him still hanging under. He landed into a wonderous land and never came back. End.

Okay, I don't really think that's what happened, but it would have made a good ending if this had been a children tale.
