2-ch is much more mainstream and has many adults in it while here, majority of posters are internet superheroes who are growing up and some kids who managed to get here, but over the past year the number of posts that are worth the read is decreasing. i mean what we have here is usually 20ish, mostly anti-social or weird in some way.

I think 4-ch is probably offputting to many because of its heavy focus on Japanese culture and Japan in general. Of course, it's derived from a Japanese concept, so naturally it attracts people interested in Japan, but the kind of mainstream audience that's the western equivalent of 2channel's userbase would probably look at it and think "oh, it's an otaku board".
There's a board for anime and manga, but nothing for non-Japanese animation and comics. Over half of the threads in the music board are about Japanese music.
I think having a connection with 2ch and the Japanese users can be valuable for 4-ch (except the vippers trolling about korea everywhere) but on the other hand, it could definitely benefit from more western users who aren't obsessed with Japanese pop culture.
Actually to say "more western users" is a bit too specific of me. not just western, but English speaking.
Anonymous BBS-en (is there a proper plural for that?) work best with a very large userbase. This is because the incentive to visit the BBS must derive entirely from thread quality, not the sort of "I'm going to see my friends" feeling that named BBSs can rely on.
Unlike 2ch, 4-ch can't really utilize a vacuum of internet communities; most western users already frequent some moderate-size BBS. And until boards stop having a thread turnover so slow that some boards still contain threads last updated in 2005, there isn't enough content being generated to attract people who aren't just interested in Anonymous BBSs in general.

In my opinion, I'd say 4-ch is smarter as it does some minimal moderation. Both 2ch and 4ch have their fair share of juvenile posts and posters. 2ch remains as moronic as 4ch. 4ch remains as insightful as 2ch. Since there are far more posters to 2ch, the threads do seem be "more intense" than they do here in 4ch, probably because of the turnover rate of the threads. In the less populated 2ch style boards that are not part of 2ch, I'd say the ratio of great to mediocre to bad posts are lower than 4ch as they are often hit by spam (at least the BBSs that I visit) and people seem to be idiotic for some reason.
I guess several people discover 4ch after 4chan, because of the name, or they discover BBS and want to see what other ones there is. That's my case. 4ch is the bigger discussion (not images) one I found, and moves a little (unlike some image boards that are never posted on). So I came back.
The thing is there's a tendancy to post stupidities just because that's like this on 4chan. As soon as you think of something, anything, you post it before the thread disappears or someone else posts it ("in b4"). When people get here and see some idiotic posts, even a few, they'll think you can do it here too.
As for the japanese side, it's true that 4ch is very much oriented towards this, and seriously. See the "japanese culture and tradition" thread in AA. That's why I'm coming less, because I'm not really into this and don't know much.
/b/ seems to be getting less instant turnover. I see a lot of threads with replies in the hundreds. Granted, many of them are one person using directory dump and many suck, but that's beside the point. Threads take longer to disappear now.

2ch has a much larger user base, and thus a higher number of people who make an effort to keep intelligent discussion alive. There are a number of stupid posts, but there are also enough smart posts to make up for it and push the stupid posts off the board. This doesn't work as well on 4ch, where there aren't enough good posts to make the bad ones drop off the board.

2ch has a lot of scholastic forums like physics, biology, medicine, computer science, law, etc. that are frequented by many graduate students, college faculties, researchers, and other sorts of highly educated folks on the subjects. 2ch also doesn't censor political content like this place does.

The only posts that really ever get deleted are posts that blatantly violate the rules (Which mostly means they're illegal under aussie law), are in the wrong board, are outright spam ("Hey check out my web site blah blah blah"), or are by a known spammer / troll.
