Religion: DO YOU HAVE IT? (40)

What's Anon's religion? Or non-religion? Or philosophy? Or religious background? What does Anon think of religion? Etc., etc.

I was not raised in a very religious environment. I don't even know what religion my parents are...My mom was raised Anglican, but she doesn't seem very Angilcan now. I don't know what was with my dad, he said he went to church for the free food. I think my mom believes in the Christian God, though. But she also believes somewhat in divination and astrology. Dunno about pa.

I like going to churches sometimes (I've been to a few of them to see friends at different religous events), and I like the aesthetics of religious ceremonies. I've never felt "sinful" about things, although I do consider myself moral. Lots of my friends are Catholics, and though I don't know much about it, Catholicism really seems to screw with peoples' heads. Many of my friends who went to Cathlic schools are now angry and rebellious, and dress like HS goths even though they should be beyond that by now...They don't seem to respect their religion at all, but they are always feeling guilty about all kinds of weird shit that really has nothing to do with them.

I was not raised religious. I would find it comforting to believe in God, but have been unable to resolve the problem of evil to my satisfaction. As such, I think I'll have to be either a deist, a dystheist, or a gnostic. Or possibly a Buddhist.

I'm a pastafarian. It makes a hell of a lot more sense than any other monotheistic religion I've seen.

I was not raised religious, but I saw the need for a strong philosophy that would guide me in life. I became a Buddhist.

I like the philosophy of Ayn Rand.

There are some threads in /science/ you might like. Even if the discussions have slowed down... lots.

All religions make me wanna throw up
All religions make me sick
All religions make me wanna throw up
All religions suck
They all claim that they have the truth
That'll set you free
Just give 'em all your money and they'll set you free
Free for a fee

They all claim that they have 'the Answer'
When they don't even know the Question
They're just a bunch of liars
They just want your money
They just want your consciousness

All religions suck
All religions make me wanna throw up
All religions suck
All religions make me wanna BLEAH

They really make me sick
They really make me sick
They really make me sick
They really make me sick
They really make me sick
They really make me ILL

I made one up by myself, and all who needs to worship is myself. I call it, "Super Omni God Religion that doesn't need a fucking cult to enjoy". By that, I follow what Shinto says, that there are Gods everywhere residing is everything you could possibly imagine, and I follow some Nihilistic-ism, in which means that living life is about as good as church, and I don't need to persuade people to follow.

Ayn Rand, yecch. Selfish asshole, IMO.

Personally, I admire aspects of many religious philosophies that advocate some form of altruism or kindness to fellow human beings (for I feel this is about the only legitimate moral imperative there is). But I'm a former Marxist and devout, lifelong atheist, with an unshakable conviction that there is no higher power or god of any variety.

Self-interest is rational. And being kind to people (and animals, even) is part of that, according to my judgment. But not sacrificing myself, or eating others. Well, I eat meat... eh. It's not about shitting on other people.

You haven't understood Rand if you think that calling her "selfish" is some kind of charge against her (she proudly called herself that) or that altruism is equivalent to kindness. The whole basis of her moral philosophy was to question these kinds of assumptions.

23 Name: Anonymous : 2007-07-28 18:59 ID:6N4c/bAa

>>22
>>19 may have understood Rand completely, but understanding her idea of altruism not being equivalent to kindness is not the same as agreeing with her. And just because she happily labeled herself "selfish" doesn't mean it carries no negative connotations in general usage anymore.

Musashi was a cool guy. He could kill two people with two swords. At the same time. Now that's religion.

I understand Rand quite well... her work is almost blindingly simple to follow. Her novels in particular offer some of the baldest allegories this side of C.S. Lewis.

I just don't respect or like her very much.
