4-ch is a failed experiment (171)

I think the problem is that the board members have too narrow of interests. I've tried a few times to post news items that aren't Japan-related. No one replies to them. Post something remotely Japanese, and the board lights up like Christmas.

Now, I like Japan, Japanese culture, Anime and all that, but it seems that most people here have no interest in anything beyond their Japanophilia. More people would visit if we had news dicussions about Iraq, the Presidential Elections, technology, American TV, Science Fiction (the real stuff -- Isimov, Clarke, and Heinlin). Instead, we get Japan, Japan, Japan -- and not even a braod discussion of Japanese culture -- It's Japanese pop-culture -- anime, games, and occasionally politics. Why would anyone without a Japan Fetish bother?

I don't think it's the set-up. Slashdot is similar in look, and in allowing random anonymous troll posts. But Slashdot has something 4-ch doesn't -- content that people want to read. Slashdot covers everything technology and a lot of interesting stories in which politics crosses the path of technology. Sites like Daily Kos or Free Republic allow pretty free reign in dicussion of politics, so if you want to follow that, you go there. We have ... Japan. I live in America, for the most part Japan is just a place that makes Anime and Video Games.

If you want 4-ch to grow, get more interesting content. I don't think we'll devolve to troll-land, if the content is smart, people will comment more intelligently.
