People take these two authors way too seriously. You know how many censorship debates are won purely by saying IT'S JUST LIEK 1984!@? Way the fuck too many. It's long past time to recognize that these are works of fiction representing fears rather than definitive fact. Overstimulation and autocratic centralization are trends of the modern world, but this doesn't mean we have to call it a HUXLEY-ORWELL FUTURE, because life is far too complex to classify into superficial blankets.
Also, I think people need to recognize that utopia and Dystopia are present within all societies simultaneously. Authoritarianism and decadence are not the worst of evils by any means.
Meh. Remember East Germany? They continually monitored their citizens, controlled the media 100%, and terrorized their people with a brutal secret police force. Even after all that effort, they couldn't stop a revolution. That's Orwell taken care of.
As for Huxley, I think the idea that the masses aren't paying attention is blown out of proportion. Super Bowl vs. State of the Union? Come on. Some of us prefer to read the full text online to avoid those long awkward pauses for applause. The Super Bowl is a live sport. Reading transcripts of football would be more brain dead than actually watching it.
