2ch actually has some boards foreigners can post on. for example yomogi.2ch.net/english , although there's only a thread or two in full english. there were a ton more boards added after they got 8ch.
as far as I can tell, most people here seem to think 4ct and progrider are shit, although they're pretty good funposting-wise.
freech just added a textboard
freech's textboard is pretty good even though it's just tinyib without images
I wish to setup a textboard myself.
I've noticed that kareha requires a lot of individual configuration options and needs to be copied for different boards.
Is there no over-arching system?

I tried them. They seem really buggy and you can't seem to sage, and SJIS is broken. Am I doing something doing?

I can't really say because I don't really use them because most of them are slower than even here.
The only somewhat active one is vip 8, and that's just people posting porn.
