I Admit it.

I used to play Pokemon cards from about 8th to 11th grade, and I enjoyed it. I've played in quite a few tournaments, was part of the original leauge (Still have that DCI card) and own pretty much all of the first 30 or so promo cards (along with a quite a few besides that... and I actually got these from the leauges/movies/packages they came from... not buying them.)

I've also played Yu-Gi-Oh as well (only for a few months though, around when the second set first came out.) And I own some DragonBall Z cards (played in one tournament) and a CCS Card game deck (It's useless.)

I've probably spent about $600 on cards... orz.

I'm in my third year of college now, BTW, so it's been a while. If I was challaged today I probably wouldn't know their new-fangeled rules. grumbles

I used to play Yugioh DM alot, I always played in the Japanese CGI version of it

I still remember getting raped by the same guy who used Hinokagutsuchi to empty my hand and then Yatakarasu to peck me to death OTL

I played Magic:TG from 9th to about 12th grade. I stopped around the time of 4th edition and Homelands. I had a look at a casual match recently, and all the gimmick effects one needs to keep track of now make me think maybe it's good I got out when I did.
I still have all my cards, and a starter deck of some flash in the pan Marvel CCG(useless).

I wonder if anyone still remembers Grey Ogres or the Icatians.

Not really, Fallen Empires & Homelands were pretty lame sets.
Ice Age was the best.

6 Name: Enthusiast : 2005-12-01 02:00 ID:pBgryo6v

How are the new expansions(blocks?) Do they still come with their own lands like Ice Age? It looks like they put out a new one every year so they look like they're pretty disposable. If I wanted to get back in, would I be better off sticking to the core sets? Are those "theme" decks any better than a regular starter deck?

Cardboard crack owns. MTG is a lot of fricking fun, but I got tired of playing against people with broken cheater decks with 10+ year old cards. I have my own favorites among the old cards, but I hate broken decks - I don't like playing against them, and it's boring as shit to play WITH them.

I don't see the point in beating someone with some lame 3 card trick that recursively deals damage to them to the point that they're at -5,000 life by the time you're done. Fucking waste of time.

>>6
All expansions come with new lands in the first set of the three they release. Kamigawa has really wicked cool lands with Japanese architecture and scenery. You should check out the lands for Unglued and Unhinged, too. Those are some schweet premium artwork cards, really beautiful.

Hey MTG fans! Do you remember Ovinomancers? I liked to use them when my opponent had a few big creatures. For some reason such a lame card really worked.

Good old blue creature-fuck card. I love that kind of stuff - presently my two best decks are my blue counterspell/unsummon deck, and my newer blue ninja deck. Pisses people off (especially those who play with really expensive creatures) to bounce them for a piddly one or two blue mana.

It's even more fun to cast a counterspell when they play that one (usually really lame and broken) card that makes their deck's "trick" go off. I can't tell you how satisfying it is to watch my opponent build up their carefully crafted trick to decisively win the game, while I sit on a bunch of counterspells. To make it even more delicious, grab some counterspells that let you discard or sacrifice to cast them - just in case your cocky opponent thinks he's got you covered by tapping or destroying all your islands.

\(^^)/ Hooray for blue!

I played Magic too for a year or 2 around when Ice Age was new. But it got too expensive for me then (i was some little boy) :(
Today i rarely play cards :x

We still have a ton of MTG cards and some half-formed decks from back before 2000 (me and my siblings that is). One day we'll get bored and probably play a few games... Viashivan dragon go

15 Name: Enthusiast : 2005-12-15 03:40 ID:XDwPGO7h

MTG is still going strong over here in Hawaii, unlike that
unhumaly stupid yugioh game. but most of the people who play
here pay type 1 which sux for me because i play type 2 and get
owned.

I used to play MTG online with gccg. But these days I rarely play anymore, I sucked anyway ^^.

17 Name: Enthusiast : 2006-01-02 10:05 ID:n+fisXQe

I have a pretty sweet Boros deck (Ravnica). I didn't really like Kamigawa that much, mechanics-wise.

18 Name: Covenant : 2006-01-22 21:14 ID:8dXrgqkc

Used to play MTG for many years, since 4th Edition. Stopped after Ice Age, the game started to loose it's "Magic"

Hey, >>18, I kind of liked Weatherlight! But that long sage that came afterwards, the one with slivers, was so tedious.

Actually, Yugioh is a very interested game. Very structured. I've being playing since the game came out, so that's six years. I've heard numerous people rave about MTG. I never fully understood it. I guess because no one around here plays it. =\

22 Name: Anonymous Enthusiast : 2006-04-24 11:01 ID:BT/GkqvV

Yugioh is not a structured game. In a structured game, a good player wins and a bad player loses. That's not how it was at all for Yugioh

When I started playing around 5-6 years ago, there wasn't much to complain about because everyone used Rush/Revival decks and Scapegoat/Cannon Soldier if they wanted to be cute

Then Magic Ruler came out, and so did all those Magic burn cards, so people started putting them in their side-decks to counter off Big Bang Girl and Cannon Soldier decks. Thus, the age of the Yu-Gi-Oh Prick had began. So, all we have left is Rush decks, right? We have 1900 basics, Spear Dragon, Platoon Commander, Psycho Shocker, ect, ect. All Scapegoat is good for now is to be eaten by Selket or for a Power of Unity trick. This isn't bad, right?

Wrong. Vampire Lord and freaking Pyramid Turtle rush decks were everywhere now. Plus everyone was using Fiber Pod to re-start the game if their cheese failed. This went right up until Konami decided to restrict Vampire Lord to 1 per deck.

Okay, so we're even now, right? No. Champion of Black Magician was released and so we got a little card named Magic Warrior Breaker. Nobody paid much attention to him at first, but then a psycho in a Japanese tourney decided to use 3 of them, and then Konami noticed how broken it really was. It was too late, though. Everyone caught on, and it was Breaker x3 in every fucking deck

So, they restrict to 1 per deck. It's okay, right?

No, then Chaos Soldier and Chaos Dragon get released. Clear the field, whack with Chaos Soldier twice, GG. Chaos Dragon was worse, but it took a bit more skill to use (just barely enough to exclude the kid who just figured out how to play yesterday and hasn't figured out that maybe dumping your creatures could be a GOOD thing)

O.K. then they BOTH get restricted. We're cool now, right?

Of course not. Magical Scientist and every fucking Fusion creature ever created in the history of the world went into everyone's deck (and don't forget the Catapult Turtle + Guessing Game!)

Then Konami restricts that shit, and this is around where I just quit playing. It's simply astounding how a game with only 2 or 3 deck worthy cards released per expansion can be so incredibly gay. It got to the point where if I couldn't flip open my Killer Snake then chain it with a Tidal Wave in the opening move, then there was literally no other time that I could ever think about attacking the other guy with his Dragon/Soldier/Scientist/whatever the hell

And so this was my adventure into the world of the YuGiOh OCG. I never played the English version of it, but I'm not one of those retards who think they're better than people who play the English version. In fact, I sucked hard at the OCG, too.

23 Name: Anonymous Enthusiast : 2006-04-24 11:05 ID:BT/GkqvV

And there was also the increasingly stupid and almost non-coherent ruling changes made every other day.

I still remember all of us chaining Destruction Ring to Psycho Shocker and paying MULTIPLE times to make Injection Angel Lily bigger to rush the other guy to death faster. And these weren't minor things at all. Who could tell us they were wrong, tho? This was before we realized that logic played no part in YGO rules, only very vague and stupidly worded card effects

After we found out the real rulings, we didn't really know what to do anymore other than just sit and wait to be rushed to death during the time when the game was already decided by the guy who just spent 6000+ LP to Lily. This wouldn't be the last time when we'd be left wondering WTF is going on after we found out a new rule that contradicted everything that everyone ever did in any games ever

24 Name: Ulrich : 2006-04-25 02:24 ID:HPCwu6GH

Well, the rulings do become a bit complex, and I don't agree with the ban list either. But, the ban list actually brings some challenge to the game. Restriction of various cards make one build a different type of deck focused on particular "non-banned" cards, and duke it out. Traditional format has no restricted cards, since it is technically the original format. I play the English version. Can't read Japanese. >.> The best thing about the Konami here is America is that if they put something on the banned/restriction list, they can take it off. Japan on the other hand, cannot. Once they put something on the list, it stays on. We have a somewhat better advantage here. The rules may boggle ones mind and become frustrating at times, but the complexity and gameplay are what make it an interesting game nonetheless.

25 Name: Anonymous Enthusiast : 2006-04-26 06:05 ID:BT/GkqvV

Yugioh does have alot of charming qualities and complexity (when I started playing, the OCG had the ugliest card art of any game I'd seen, but stuff like setting traps was an appeal)

Then you start playing with other people. And this is where the problems come from. The game would be GREAT if it weren't retards and pricks who only care about winning (As if its their fucking livelihood) In tournaments, this can be forgiven. But tell me, what is the fun is Yatakarasu locking your opponent in every game? There's literally a billion other cards and deck types that can be created, but no one used them because they don't want to have fun. In Yugioh, Fun = Getting the shit raped out of you

Have you been around YGO for very long? Even though I look back at the game with alot of anger and sadness, I still think that in the end, I had a good time. I'd love to meet those people I hung out with at message boards back then. Did you ever post on any boards? If so, which ones? I may have seen you around

Yes, I fully understand what you mean. Most people get arrogant and just care about victory, not having fun. But some people are different. I would like to win, but losses teach lessons, so, It's nothing to be angry about. Yata Garasu was very annoying. T.T

Yes, although I've been playing for 6 years, I live in an area with no Duelist League or Tournaments. It is just my three friends and I. My childhood friend, who was the first one I got into the game, quit about a year or two ago. We were pretty even. With staggering defeats, draws(sometimes), and wins. He said he quit because he was getting too old. He's only 13 at the moment. Lol. I guess he didn't want his schoolmates thinking he was a TCG nerd or whatnot. Peer pressure. =\

Actually, I joined three boards a long time ago. I was an Administrator on two. I went to Kaibacorp first, then Yugioh Beach, then Newseason(where I stayed for the duration of my forum days). I left because I was bored of forums. I had been playing Endless Online, an MMORPG at the time as well. I was a bit fanatical about that, so I wasn't on the forums as much. And that's when I left. I had fun whilst I was there though, especially at Newseason. I was Yami Yugi there. It was interesting to compete with fellow Admins in postting. Ah, the good days. =)

I also played M:tG, and the Highlander CCG. Yeah... <-- Dork

I play yugioh, but I stopped buying cards and downloaded the online YVD program (kinda like yugioh online cept free).

Anyone else play YVD?

I was once a fond player of Yu-Gi-Oh but I was getting fed up of the tournament atmosphere, that and good new cards where hard to find (the designers must have been in a slump or something). Also my friends didn't really want to play it, so the game was dieing to me. Luckily 2 of my friends are still interested in the game so I can play casually, but my days of buying cards are over.

I'll just stick to casual and the DS game for now, fun ways of playing. Plus i'll still browse its forums every now and then. TCG nerd I shall remain! But the spark I found when I started the game is gone now. It was fun while it lasted I guess.

I used to play Pokemon, but then moved on to Yugioh. I had DBZ cards, but I had no idea how to play them. lol I am now playing FMA.

I used to be really into magic, but looking back, I had the most fun playing Rage (the card game about werewolves). Mostly, it was because of the shit-talking in funny voices, while windmilling cards on the board.

Later, we cut out the cards and kept the shit-talking.

Pokemon is the most blatantly marketing-centric concept ever. a show in which you have to collect ALL of something. The slogan is "Gotta Catch 'em All!" Come on, now.

The only thing worse is Yu-Gi-Oh! aka You-Gay-Ho!
A show about a card game? Come on now. Jeezus.

I was into magic during middle school. I never really had enough money to buy many cards, so I was always the one with a totally random ass deck thrown together at the last minute. I stopped playing magic around ice age, but that was only because I moved in to star wars. Hell yeah that game dominated magic at the local gaming/fantasy shop for a while.

I've played MTG, Yugioh, Pokemon, Duelmasters, UFS, and Zatchbell/Gashbell all at one time or another I still have the cards in a shoebox right now. It is sad realizing how much money I dumped into it while rarely gaining anything of value.
