I'm trying to learn guitar.

Personally, I think bass should be hella easy once you know regular guitar. Maybe different spacing.

every instrument is easy to play but it's hard to master. Dont aim to the best in the world play becouse it's fun and it will come by it self :)

Good luck!

>>6 Yeah thats the idea. I want to learn for the fun and simply so i can sit on the beach and play. (acustic guitar that is)

Bass looks so funky with the slapping/popping, i'd love to 'get da funk down' or some popular in term.

Yeah, bass is much easier to learn then guitar. Just need really butch fingers coz of the really thick strings.

You probably already know this but the bass is more about rhythm then melody. So try not to go all crazy on the bass.

bass is easier to learn than guitar, but more difficult to master

Seconded, my fingers hurt like hell when I play for any long period of time. Going from bass to guitar, the difference in strings makes it feel like you are playing the freaking air.

If you're a decent guitar player, you'll have a pretty good sense of where to "find the notes" on a bass. Playing bass also gives you a generally better sense of where the scales and intervals are on a guitar, and it makes you more conscious of the bass notes in your guitar chords. It's worth it to play both, I think. Plus, bass is generally less complicated. Less pedals and knobs and cords (and chords) and buttons...simpler, and fun to play.

You should see my pedalboard...

I've played both, now playing bass exclusively, and I'd say that bass is harder to play well.

I've been playing bass for a couple of months now but there's a problem that pops up every now and again.

When I try to play on the E-string, sometimes there will be a buzz which I can hear when my amp is turned down.

Could somebody please tell me how to stop the buzzing?

I'm playing finger style and just teaching myself at this stage. I'm hoping to go for lessons later down the track.

If you can't hear it through the amp, that sounds like some loose part resonating somewhere. Try fastening every single screw in your bass.

"my boyfriend plays both. He said bass isn't as hard as e-guitar. :)"

That would be true only if you're playing the typical MTV stuff, with single notes being played repeatedly, and endlessly, over a four-chord progression. Try listening to other stuff; e.g. Jaco Pastorius, John Patitucci, Billy Sheehan, Marcus Miller, etc. or the old school jazz greats, and you'll discover that the bass is not really a "simple" instrument -- it's just as difficult as any other instrument, and just as lovely, so long as you put practice into playing it.

I personally play the guitar. I've been at at it for about 6 years, and I tackle lead guitar stuff usually. I play metal (In Flames, Children of Bodom, old Metallica, etc.) and jazz (though I'm still trying to, because improvising's pretty difficult; I like Frank Gambale, Greg Howe, John Mclaughlin, Al Dimeola, Charlie Parker (he's on saxophone, BTW), etc.

So if you've any questions on the guitar, feel free to ask. If I can help, I will.

What's more important, creativity or technicality?

Bass is indeed much easier to start with but sooner or later you're going to hit a wall whitch seperates the 'good' players from the 'talented' ones.

Just try to play stuff you like. I mainly play hardcore punk but I also experiment with R&B and Jazz and even hiphop. If you want to get really good I suggest find someone to teach you some jazz stuff.

Or pick up slapping, it's not my cup of tea personally but it looks pretty flashy.

dear if u r really willing to learn the bass, u gotta work on rythems and only rythems in the beginning. Then after mastering some of the famous rythems and fills, u can enjoy practicing solos...try to take lessons to avoid the most common mistakes that most ppl do when they first play the bass, cuz when u learn or use a wrong technique u face a hard time trying to change it afterward... and always remember that playing the bass is about having fun and sharing the music with other people.

good luck all.
