Hobbies you have tried that just didn't work out and why (70)

Creating electronic music - Not enough attention span to read manual, fucked around for about an hour in fruity loops and got fed up with it.

Standard Musical Instrument - Tried Keyboard and Recorder. I'm not coordinated musically also it didn't appeal to me for some reason.

Skateboarding/Surfboarding - Did this while a kid for sometime but got sick of fucking up my ankles and I wasn't that great. Also Surfboards are expensive.

Skydiving - Extremely fun but ~$200 for a jump if you have no equipment. Way too expensive.

Videogames - Only a few appeal to me, mostly puzzle games and there isn't a huge variety of them. I'm still experimenting with this one.

Graphic Design/Drawing/Art/Sculpture - I'm not creative. I've tried drawing and coming out with things and it usually ends up being either abstract shapes or it just sucks.

Photography - I'm not sure how good my digital camera is and I don't really have anything interesting to take pictures of.

Sports [ Baseball, Wrestling, Soccer/Football, Basketball ] - It's not enjoyable but a good way to get exercise and in shape (esp wrestling). Also not good at these.

Paintballing - Done a few times. Was OK but not entertaining enough to invest at least $500.

CCG (Collectable Card Games) - Played pokemon/magic as a kid but it just seems like a money scam/dick sizing contest.

Making Videos - Took a semester of video/film in HS and hated it. I do not enjoy drawing storyboards and I lack creativity also I don't have many actors/friends to be in the movie.

Drugs - Tried a huge variety of psychedelics both classical and experimental phenethylamines and tryptamines. Sampled opiods, stimulants. Eventually ended up in mental hospital for a month due to sleep depreciation + n,n-DMT. So now I just stick with the rare occassion of oxycodone, small amounts of cannabis, or methamphetamine. All which will not totally fuck my head.

So I'm left with watching films and television shows that I download online while listening to music. Sometimes researching various sociology/psychology topics and wasting a ton of time on imageboards or /b/. The problem with this is I have no social hobbies. Am I fucked? Y/N?

2 Name: Anonymous Enthusiast : 2007-07-01 17:29 ID:XIMTDbWU

I tried Aikido for about a year or more. I eventually gave up because it was just too hard, and I couldn't learn it no matter how hard I tried, and I wasn't enjoying it. Martial arts really just aren't for me.

3 Name: Anonymous Enthusiast : 2007-07-01 19:21 ID:lz6jhuBS

Art - Didn't have any skill and didn't want to learn how to improve.

Video Gaming - Basically the same thing as the OP.

Marital Arts - No discipline...Eventually I got pissed because everyone was better than I was so I gave up.

> last paragraph Am I fucked? Y/N?

You sound somewhat like me. You don't need social hobbies, as long as you spend time with others, even just talking or sharing a meal. Most importantly with family.

I played video games like a drugged korean, but I put them all down and haven't touched a real game since last December. I don't know why.
As for other hobbies, no one has mentioned collections (coins, stamps, insects, other dull things). I tried to start collections in the past, but wasn't committed or interested enough.

5 Name: Anonymous Enthusiast : 2007-07-11 21:07 ID:VXCNKrTx

Photography - Finding anything interesting to photograph was extremely hard for me. Also, I absolutely hate being photographed myself, so I just couldn't make myself take photos of other people.

Digital illustration - I couldn't concentrate on the big picture and ended up endlessly polishing irrelevant small details.

I play guitar and bass, and compose, record and listen to music. Also, I bicycle quite a bit, although I don't really consider it a hobby of mine per se. Also programming, which is my job, doubles as a major hobby.

logic - realized it was best studied in the context of something practical such as math, programming or physics

programming - realized it was a tool for corporate technicians

math - realized the language is antiquated.

physics - realized it is based on math

linguistics - gaaaaaaaaaaaay

i currently do papercraft of pokemon and nge.

Computer, video, and conventional Games. Just about all games. For some reason though I still play, I've never built up any skill. So I really suck even after all this time. Still fun though, but frustrating.

I feel your pain. Years of gaming and I still can't get past the beginning of any game without concerted effort and steel resolve.

13 Name: Anonymous Enthusiast : 2007-10-03 22:26 ID:v0iNL2We

Give up gaming.
All that wasted time could be better spent learning music, sports, social games, gambling, fighting, or building up an alcohol tolerance.
Fun hobbies that also happen to also be somewhat useful in everyday life.

Who are you to decide that video gaming is a less legitimate hobby than all the others? Video gaming develops hand-eye coordination, reaction time, concentration, problem-solving skills, and communication/team skills. Get off your high horse.

16 Name: Anonymous Enthusiast : 2007-10-07 18:27 ID:v0iNL2We

>>15
I decided for myself; that's all that matters.
I have the right to do so, and failed hobbies are what this thread is about.

> hand-eye coordination

Yes, that's why I can't catch a ball.

> reaction time

Granted, as far as pressing buttons goes.

> concentration

To the detriment of all else.

> problem-solving skills

If you want to solve your problems with bullets, L-Shaped blocks, or by casting Ultima, then yes.

> and communication/team skills.

Perhaps if you play Team Fortress clan matches.
For the most part, social skills suffer when not dealing face-to-face with people.

Most importantly I feel it's a waste of my time because it's not going to help me gain capital, gain a family, contribute to humanity or better myself/others. I won't die while regretting time I could have spent building something for myself besides a megalopolis in SimCity XVII.
Invest your own time however you want, I'm not going to judge.

Drawing - what to draw? Another furry? Happy days before I actually knew what furry is all about... Stoped abruptly after learning the truth :) Drawing anime style characters just isn't any fun to me anymore. Drawing anything else even less.

Skinning Windows XP. Seriously, who still does that? Any selfrespecting geek skins Linux systems.

Photography. No pretty ladies to tak photos of and the price of equpement keep me less than enthusiastic about it. Taking photos of bugs and flowers just isn't fun.

Writing a blog. After I learned about /b/ and *chans and discovering the back alleys of internet I really do not wish to contribute anything personal to interent that can be linked to my real identity. Other than work related stuff.

Music. EVERYBODY can do house music and other techno stuff these days. Have the talent but am easily bored with repetitive tump-tump.

So I lurk here for the time beeing and I also picked up an idea that it might not be a bad idea to lose those 10kg of fat I have - if that's a hobby?

Martial Arts - too much work

Programming - too boring

Playing the guitar - too much effort

Meditation - waste of time

21 Name: Anonymous Enthusiast : 2007-11-26 05:34 ID:S2POPZ7Z

Sport - I ended up in a fat lazy lump
Model Railroad - My money ran out.. now its unfinished an standing in the basement
Piano - to difficult

Warhammer. Bought an army, painted it, discovered there was no one in my town to play with.

Piano, cello, violin. Schoolwork took priority.

Online roleplaying. Lost all creativity around the time I began playing MMORPGs.

23 Name: Anonymous Enthusiast : 2007-11-26 09:59 ID:hAIA0iuK

Martial Arts - I'm too poor. Maybe when I'm wealthier.

Piano - My fingers are too short. I can't reach the notes!D:

Programming - I broke a monitor from smashing my head into it in frustration too much.

Sports - Wait, I actually tried this? Oh, wait, that's right, they gave me sticks in hockey, but if you hit people with them you keep getting fouls or something. Pass.

Jigsaw Puzzles - Actually, I liked these. Don't know why I stopped doing them, maybe because I didn't clean my room and ran out of floor to actually do them on.

24 Name: Anonymous Enthusiast : 2007-12-09 08:43 ID:APQWa3Qt

Musical instruments - Recorder (Ha, Fourth grade), Violin (Twice!), Piano, Guitar. I still enjoy Violin, but I am merely mediocre and not devoted enough to really get into it.

Model building - Too obsessive for me. I can't fathom how people manage to build those damn things with parts smaller then half a pinky-nail size.

Airbrushing - Not enough time, although people have told me I have a good hand and make some interesting things - And christ, have you ever seen the price of decent paints? I stuck to dirt-cheap food coloring when I was practicing and playing around (And it makes clean-up a whole lot easier too, as a bonus)

Photography - Not enough money to really fly into it, be it for a DSLR body and lens set, or to constantly develop film for the Film SLR and Rangefinders I have.

Cooking - I can do it, but god, that much effort? I'll stick to frozen and canned food, thanks. I still enjoy breaking out the Wok for a nice stir-fry once or twice a month, though.

Chinese Tea - Not enough time, but you've never experienced tea until you've tried it the Chinese way. I would merrily spend many a day sipping tea and watching the leaves change colors and the snow flutter down, if I could simply sit for many an hour doing nothing.

Target Shooting - In the process of hitting that 'Not Working' point. So much fun. So expensive, even if you stick to Milsurps as I do. Oh sure, there's always .22lr which can be had for a cent and a half a round, but that's no fun - The real fun's at the full power rifle rounds, and the cheapest of those run at ~15 cents each (Might not sound like much, but consider that you're probably shooting off hundreds of them during an extended day at the range)

MMORPGs - Not. Enough. Time. They were great when I was a kid - I spent many, many an hour grinding away during High School in EQ1, but nowadays? The shudder at the thought of spending two hours /sitting and waiting for a rare spawn to get an even rarer drop.

You people suck. You gave up on things and then posted about them on the internet.

Personally, the only hobbies I "gave up" on were due to not having enough time. Most of them I re-pick up from time to time, but doing so little and only every now and then doesn't help me improve them much.

For hobbies, you need to face them with a Naruto/DBZ/YuuYuu hakusho/Yakitate Japan/Beck sort of passion. Like "I'll practice for 25 hours everyday, an I will get stronger than you!"

43 Name: Anonymous Enthusiast : 2008-03-13 23:42 ID:ygxIGHai

45 Name: Anonymous Enthusiast : 2008-03-19 11:16 ID:IqEmDdLN

OP - you sound way too lazy. Too lazy to do drugs? Come on.
Only hobby I've ever give up on was the Violin.
I already play guitar and bass, but the £30 Violin I bought was so shit it couldn't stay in tune for more than 5 minutes at a time. Took about half an hour to re-tune it. So getting half an hour's practice often took me half the day. Fuck that.

My other current hobbies include guitar (as mentioned), making electronic music, /b/, (shit yeah - that reminds me - I gave up on browsing the British site b3ta 'cos I discovered /b/ and realised b3ta was no longer funny 'cos it's "too tame"), weed, mountain biking, art, photography, bitches, and masturbation. LOL!!!11one

You fuckers need to get motivated.

I just tried getting close to a girl. I ended up hurting myself by all the possible things she could have been holding against me instead of how she probably really felt. It's the third day I've hung out with her, but I already know that I'll never be successful with a girl. It's Asperger's, seriously. I've always been terrible with real people.

Such are my hobbies.

Soccer- I never had much passion for it, but the ability to show off my superior fitness to my nerdy group of friends was a big plus. As I progressed in the soccer level skills, people got more arrogant and less intelligent, so I gave up. I still have very good stamina from all my days running on the field, which is a plus.

Martial Arts- Was sort of like soccer. The only thing keeping me going was the knowledge that I was better than those which did not do martial arts, however, I was struck with being very inferior compared to those that do. It was pretty nasty to have to painfully stretch until I could do the splits, or do a 180 degree scissor kick in order to get anywhere in the upper belts. Also conflicted with my studies, so I quite. Someday I might take it up again, when I have more spare time.

Music- An on/off thing. Im not that good at it, and lack any good skills like hearing notes by ear, reading sheet music and composing. I pretty much play songs through muscle memory, a bad habit.

MMORPGS- Got sick of grinding to the detriment of my studies. I now browse iamgeboards and forums and watch anime instead.

52 Name: Anonymous Enthusiast : 2008-03-25 17:46 ID:AaRoBeZk

MMORPG's- Ran out of money, it was fun tho, untill peoole would give you shit for wanting to leave after 9 hours. I have shit to do, sorry, find another mage bitch tits.

General gaming- It was ok, but my husband hogs the system.

Tropical aquariums - I really enjoyed this and had up to 6 tanks running at one time. Unfortunatly I had to move for college so thay had to go. I did get a pair of ryukin goldfish since the move tho, tropicals were a piece of cake compared to these guys XD

Owning a pet rock.

About a year ago, I decided I wanted a pet rock. I made it a house and everything. Then I got very bored of it (as you can imagine).
Worst hobby ever.

I also tried to learn the violin, but i got bored of repetitive songs. I'd probably have enjoyed learning if I'd found anime sheet music for the violin, for example someone gave me sheet music for guilty sky.. I would have loved to learn to play that. Unfortunately, my violin is now way too small and out of tune.

Crocheting - I'm trying to make a scarf for myself, but somehow I started off really wide, and then it got thinner and thinner, and now it looks like a triangle...

Keyboard - My keyboard's AC adapter went missing, and I also rarely ever practice. I also have tiny hands, so it's really difficult for me to play in the first place.

Running - I have no stamina whatsoever when it comes to running, and my knees start to hurt after a while, as well as my ears. Actually, my whole body hurts...I hate running.D:

Martial Arts - Classes are so expensive! I had to quit once I reached yellow belt because I couldn't afford the equipment. It sucked, because I supposedly had talent, too.

Drawing: While I still occasionally draw something, I'm not that good. Although I'm significantly better than when I first started about 3 years ago. Its still crappy weaboo art so meh. It passes the time and I enjoy doing it.

Gym: Just don't have time. I used to go to the campus's gym between classes, but now as soon as class ends I go to work. Just recently I've started doing push-ups, sit-ups, etc in my spare time.

Programming: Too technical, I understood basic, but other languages are way above my head.

Papercraft: I have large hands which makes it harder to fold those smaller pieces.

Videogames: I'll play the occasional video game, and it might take me a week to finish it, and then it'll be at least a month before I play another one. They are fun, but the feeling only lasts so much as the game is interesting and isn't frustrating. I'm definitely a casual gamer.

Bookreading: I can spend hours reading forums, but I just can't get myself to read a physical book. Typically takes a month or so to finish a 200-page book.

Writing: I have so many ideas that seem cool to me in my head, but I can't seem to transfer it to paper without losing everything.

Blogging: Why would anyone give a shit about my life and/or opinions?

Drawing: I can't draw for shit, although if I were drawing furry porn I guess that wouldn't matter.

Photography: There's nothing I could photograph that everyone hasn't already seen, except for my naked body.

Gaming: No matter what game I play, if I get to one part that is too difficult, I stop playing for years, I even did the same thing with pokemon red/blue.

Programming: Still do it once in a blue moon if I get really bored, but then I'll get even more bored and stop.

Web Design: nobody needs a web designer any more.

Chat Rooms: Stopped doing chat rooms because fuck that.

Electronics: I'm far too retarded to remember everything I need to build my own circuits.

Sports: LOLOLOLOL.

Masturbation: Time will tell...

Religion: I already found Jesus, now it's my turn to hide.

Models: Way too boring.
