Who here plays the guitar? I've been going on for about 3 years now, and it will hit 4 in a few months. I can pick fairly fast, play some complicated songs, and right now I'm working on sweeping a little.

I love how this is "The" Guitar Thread, despite the existence of several others.

What kind of music do you play? What are 'complicated' songs to you?

I've played for a little bit longer than you, but I get the impression you are more about metal kinda stuff - fast picking, complicated runs, sweep picking appregios etc. I'm not so into that, so does that make me a worse player? Well that's not for me to say, heh. At the moment I don't really learn songs, I just think of a song thats in my head that day, look up a tab and play through it (usually singing as well, so obviously much more of a rythm player) but I forget the chords pretty much straight away. My lead player is pretty rubbish - I know the pentatonic scale and the major scale but I've never sat down with a rythm track and tried to solo over it. That's definately something I need to focus on at some point. Also I really should work on training my ears and learning songs just by hearing them but I'm too lazy. DEFINATELY need to get that sorted!

Actually, I'm a jazz player. I do practice those things you said, but most of the time I am trying to think of good licks to play.

I'm also trying to learn playing the guitar. My focus is on learning music theory and on training my hearing, because I think it's important to have an understanding for music before you can actually do something that is worth listening to.
I actually make little progress in my learnings, I find myself most of the time sitting around and improvising in pentatonic or ionian/aeolian mode or trying different effects on my computer.

I get that feeling too, but when you really look back on it, you can say "Wow, x years ago i couldn't play a single note" and that's nice
