I'm relatively new to playing the bass or any instrument that requires a bit of maintenance and I just got my 4th string replaced and when ever I play any note it vibrates and makes a buzzing sound. However this only occurs when I press the fretboard and it doesn't happen when playing an open note.
I do not know whether it's the string or not seeing as as soon as I got it, while trying to tune it I snapped the 4th string.
Can anyone help?
WHat you're describing is 'fret buzz'. Basically it means that the string is vibrating against a fret when it shouldn't be. What you can do is try playing different notes up the string and find where the string doesn't vibrate. That will be around the problem fret. One solution could be to get slightly thinner strings, or alternatively get the action of the string raised. I would suggest try the first route, as a new set of strings is relatively cheap. If the problem persists, take the bass into a guitar shop that does repairs and explain your problem. Also, it could be that you are playing the string a bit too hard. Also, are the strings new on? could be that they just need a bit of breaking in.
Yes the new string is on, I only replaced the 4th and what is 'breaking in'?
Strings have to work a little before getting to the good tension. Like a week or so. If after this it always buzzes, try what >>2 said. If after replacement there is still that problem, a guitar shop will fix that.
I've been playing it for a while and the buzzing noise has been gradually disapearing.

I want to try my hand at bass. I have played guitar before and know the basics but I want to play the bass more. I'm thinking of getting lessons but before that I want to try and learn on my own first, the basics at least. Where do I start? (can borrow bass from someone)
