I just started to look at this site and decided this place might be a good place to ask a serious question with anonymity. I have a small problem. I'm 23 and my two main interests, video games and anime/manga, are started to become boring to me. After so much exposure, more than enough for a lifetime even, I think I should truly move on and look for something new.
card tricks are always great fun
Maybe you should pick two hobbies: one requiring a lot of exertion, and one that doesn't. The sport keeps you in good shape and additional social ties, while you can do the other if you're sore all over.
BTW, boxing is boring as hell if you're on your own. Go to a gym instead of whacking a bag at home. Even better, they won't let you wimp out and slack off. Also, kickboxing is more interesting than plain boxing.
1) Lift weights.
Make a routine that revolves around 20 rep squats, deadlifts, dips, bent over rows, overhead presses, and chin ups. You'll feel like a new man after a few weeks. Increased energy levels, drive, and strength.
Play go. Most interesting game in the world and you'll never cease to have potential to get better. Nice ppl too. Some sport for the physical side wouldn't do any harm though, als dmpk2k suggested.
Sex!
Archery is pretty cool. See if you can find a kyujutsu teacher for the complete wapanese experience.
On the topic of martial arts, you might wanna try jujutsu, aikido, or another heavy-duty martial art if you can find a decent dojo. Avoid taekwondo, 90% of the places are halfway between summer camps and juvenile recovery programs (at least, near where I live).
I'll second the recommendation for jujitsu.
The dojo really does matter though, because some are pragmatic, while others resemble tai chi. I suppose it depends on what you're looking for.
Being as boards like these have a large weeaboo percentage, you might want to try out kyudo. (Yeah, kyujutsu was already mentioned, but generally kyudo is more readily available.) Look it up on Wikipedia for details, but in a nutshell it's like traditional japanese archery in a ritualized, formal sort of way. The improvement aspect is there, though you'll mostly be tinkering with yourself.
I don't want to derail this thread, but maybe this can become a generic "help anyone choose a new hobby" thread, as I am having the same dilemma. I am quite the hobby jumper, as I have gotten into and then dumped the following hobbies (and their associated gear) over the past four years: manga, anime, Go, Python programming, reading sci-fi / fantasy, WoW, console gaming, learning Japanese, Angband, DJing, pixel art, composing electronica, writing sci-fi / fantasy, imageboards, drawing and competitive fighting games.
Learn some card tricks. It's very cheap and will take lots of free time if you want to be done correctly.
General radio stuff (amateur or not) could be interesting, although I'm not really into it (pretty expensive for anything reasonably interesting too I believe).
Skygazing has the same possible side benefit as radio: excercise. Of course, if you live in any densely populated area (>500 000 people) giving up instantly on this makes the most sense.
All rise for the glorious entrance of Alexander to this unworthy thread!
Boxing
follow your heart
go for Target shooting
i know you like guns.
What do you know! I'm hooked on WoW again! I'll be back when I'm tired of it, whee!
Ultimate Frisbee
I reccomend you start playing Dungeons and Dragons.
How about soccer, or motorsports, either as a spectator or participant in either one. Nothing exhilartes more than driving a car at high speeds, IMO.
But it's not easy to choose a hobby. Generally, the situation is you are fascinated by, not choose that.
If you feel boring to your hobbies, take a break. Maybe the situation will get well soon or later.
I say go for Beer brewing. Even if you mess up you can still drink the shit, and if its good you can set up your own bar.
Grow weed?!?!?
How about airsofting
Try making up a Rock Band with your friends
Dirt BMXing.
Think of the most hardcore thing possible, and do it, no matter what will or might happen.
Papercraft and assembling papermodels. :3
Gotta love photography. Seriously, it's way cool.

Target shooting? With a Mini-14? The only competitive sport they're really suited for is the Practical Rifle portion of 3-Gun. Even then, you might be at a disadvantage to the AR15 crowd, especially out at 300 meters and beyond. A lot of the high-dollar, high-speed-low-drag stuff the AR guys favor (especially in Unlimited Class), like electronic red dot sights, is difficult to adapt to the Mini platform.
Build an RC plane! Archery also sounds cool. I got inspired to try that after watching "Whe Weatherman"
>>10 here again… can anyone recommend some hobbies that involve both being social and being creative? Something like being in a band, or something...
martial arts?
learn something new?
Fencing. Find a good instructor who's willing to really push you, and you can get something out of it.
Requirements:
Good hand-eye coord.
Airsoft is good hobby of mine try it..
bowling, basketball, and paintball all seems like an okay sport to do try one of them and see if u like them
A.I.R.S.O.F.T i love to play this game special in CXG ( close quarter combat) i only have 3 airsoft P90, M1 Carbine, Steyr Aug..
In CXG, are you allowed to buttstroke or bayonet your opponents when you run out of ammo? :p
heheheh its not allowed just a tap at the back will do.. :)
Making art is wonderful. Going out in town and drawing gestures is a very lively activity, and also has a social element from the commenters. It helps breach that shyness toward strangers. I had to man myself up for it (living in a small town) for 6 months, but it really changed me. I already liked drawing, though.
The ruger mini 14 is a good rifle but you can get a great rifle for so much less money. Look into "Curios and Relics" These are rifles that for the most part are 50 years old or more. There are some GREAT CnRs out there for shooters. You can pick up a K31 for $120 or so. These are swiss made rifles that fire a 7.5 mm "swiss" cartrige. GREAT target rifles. Incredible craftsmanship that would cost a grand if it were made today. Mosin Nagants are russian rifles that fire the 7.62x54 cartridge. A few flavors here. M38, m44, m39. A M44 can be had for a little over $100 dollars and milsurp ammo is cheap. You can get an Enfield MK4 for 150 or so. GREAT rifles that shoot the .303 brit. All these rifles are great fun to shoot and able to deliver prety damn good accuracy, then there is the fact that you are literaly shooting a little piece of history as well! If you want to learn more about CnRs a really good website to check out is gunsnet.net. They have a large CnR area with tons of info. Also check out http://www.aimsurplus.com/ for a better idea of what is easily available to you. My suggestion is the K31. Ammo is a little more expensive than some of the others but what an incredible rifle! Dont limit yourself to new models of rifles. You will deny yourself some great values and interesting firearms. Besides, when you buy a Ruger, you are supporting Bill Ruger and HIS support to the bogus AW and high cap mag bans. Both of which are useless moves made by worthless politicians who dont care about actualy doing any good, just pulling the wool over the less informed voter!
Target shooting w/rifles
i used to do that for a while but after a few weeks it got extremly boring i wont recommend this to anyone unless you are planning to shoot in the world finals or sth
marksmanship is a great past time. I have never known anyone who tried it that got bored with it. It is chalenging and requires much in the way of control and practice. It teaches you great discipline and focus too. It is something you can always get beter and beter at. If you are not a "gun person" you may not like it but boring it isnt. There are also lots of groups and such you can get into with a a vast diversity of people in it in which to meet! I have been involved in martial arts as well ( Kali for near 20 years now) It too is fun, but the majority of the people I have met are ninja wanabes who talk far too much about "what I would do to someone if they tried something on me" There is also little camraderie outside the school. You definatly need to give ANYTHING you try more than "A FEW WEEKS" that aproach is imature and will get you no where. Whatever you try, REALLY give it a try, and for gods sake...Dont start writing poetry, next thing you know youll be walking around with a ponytail creeping out women.....
Google it... Good history lesson. They are making a movie about the battle it stems from! What it is TODAY is the battle cry for your rights!
lol a very sophisticated view of poetry indeed
i assume you spent more than just "A FEW WEEKS" with it to achieve these insights.
No never tried writing poetry, not interested. As a voracious reader I have read it quite a bit though, I find it too self involved. It was you who said you gave things a few weeks, not me. Martial arts group diverse? Somewhat, but as I said, too many ninja wanabes. Thats why I stick to Kali, not as much possing. My lack of apreciation for poetry does not indicate lack of sophistication. I just think most of it is silly and not really a hobby.
Why dont u try something something creative like artwork. why not try making a digital artwork, surrealism is fun aswell. since u've been playing games and watching anime u might have some talent on that.
How To Fold A Paper Crane
Cooking.
Men need to cook.
Well dude, you can combine Archery and Target shooting.
If beer brewing is interesting to you and you like to experiment, try growing and breeding rare plants. Orchids, chillies, pot, etc.
Since the time investment isn't too big, you can combine it with a sport. I recommend boxing, too.
i don wanna seen as an idiot or something but it your life. if you are bored of it, then go back home , talk to your freinds & family and walk around alone, enjoy the scenery & stuff.
i mean you live your life once on this world, regardless of what your faith is anyway. if you're buddhish or sort, reincart. x= same people again. if you're muslim, chirstian @ jew, life is short and just once. do your best, earn good point and die happily.
whatt??
my personal favorite thing to do when i'm at home alone and i got nothing else to do i like to take a pig by the hunches and ram right into their flabby asses so i think u should try it...really fun and it's the new in
Beer Brewing - Pro: Fairly cheap. Con: Beer Gut from self-samplings
Boxing - Pro: Comes in handy if someone is hassling your gf. Con: See Con Air
I think >>55 summed up this thread nicely when he said:
i don wanna seen as an idiot or something but it your life. if you are bored of it, then go back home , talk to your freinds & family and walk around alone, enjoy the scenery & stuff.
And if you take up game hunting, like grouse, with a bow, you can combine target shooting, archery and cooking too.
I'm 23 and I just started learning martial arts, even though it's kinda out of the norm for me. You do start to appreciate some of the anime and films better that include martial arts as well.
I think a great new hobby would be subscribing to my channel, watching and commenting on my vids all day and all night. Many people fill their days this way and everyone is very happy.
www.youtube.com/jdrw5
how about filming? posting krap up onto youtube or sumthing...seems like a great past time especially if you have artistic talents
