I've been doing some research on ways to style my hair since I got an invite to a facebook group on jrocker style hair. I started to grow out my hair this summer and last month I tried using wax after seeing a gatsby video.

A lot of people say hair-irons are essential, but I don't think my hair is long enough to get its full benifit.

I'm not azn or japanese but I can usually get my hair to do cool styles without ironing it. I have a flat iron but almost never use it these days. Blow dry it the right way and u may not need an iron. And pick a wax that suits your hair texture. Work wax in from the bottom out (don't start on top of your head or at the tips of your hair). Tease your hair for volume and lightly comb the top to make it look smooth.

What's the difference between those wax and pomades? I hesitate to pick one on an impulse by since they seem to go for 12-15 $.

A pomade is a bit more pliable than a wax. Softer and lighter, I suppose, and can blend with other products. So if you want to do a really radical hairstyle that you hope to hold all day, I'd suggest going for a wax or hairspray rather than a pomade, which is better for just adding some texture.

I've been using gatsby wax, 3 kinds. I used to use it pretty effectively with shorter hair, but since I've grown it out more, I'm having less and less control with it. Not sure if it's the wax, applying technique, cut, or other factors.

Hairspray is my best friend. Aerosol. It's your best friend and worst enemy (well, for the environment) but it works THE BEST. Trust me on this, I'm a makeup and wig major in Theatre Design and Production. Always spray underneath the hair, not on top. You'll get that nasty heavy look if you spray it directly onto the spikes or whatever you're doing with your hair. When finshed styling, gently mist it all around your head at about a on foot radius. That'll help hold the hair in place. Teasing can also help but you always want to do it under the layers wehere it won't be seen.

If you wanna go for the spiky JRock/anime style, it really helps when you have a good cut for the purpose. Most Asians who want to achieve that look get a lot of layers, sometimes kind of choppy or shaggy. I know a lot of hairstylist use razors to get that look. Using this can thin your hair out a bit, which makes it easier to spike up and separate. I watched a video that said hair about between about 6 cm to 12 cm is easy to spike without being too short.
