Illiterate but native speaker of Russian.
What's the best way to learn how to read?
(for someone in my situation)
So far I've just been browsing the chans, learning it from motivational posters and pro-communist media, with some random jpg I found that roughly translates Russian letters to English sounds. Pretty pathetic but for the time I put in, the rewards have been great.
What kind of results can I expect in 6 months? (I've got a whole library of Russian literature that I'd like to get into.)

Ha! I love the Lipson book! We used it in my high school Russian classes occasionally. It was invariably amusing, all the more so when I heard an old lady in Moscow accuse my friends of committing 'bezobrazie takoe' for climbing on the pedestal of a Lenin statue.
I assume you can learn Russian the same way you learned how to write in English. Learn their alphabet, the sounds they make, and blam. You're good.
I'm in a similiar situation (native speaker) but I know the alphabet. I just read very slowly, so I just need to read more, but my vocabulary is lacking. What should I do?

Almost. The alphabet is phonetic and thus much easier than English. So it really is

Does anyone have any tips on easy to read books? And I don't mean children books, but things like scifi, horror, detective stories, you know books that aim to be simple easy entertainment for the masses and not art works.
