DENSHA OTOKO (121)

1 Name: Secret Admirer : 2005-11-08 10:31 ID:kVGWhrDs

Densha Otoko isn't just a TV-show! Nothing wrong with taking some inspiration from something that happened!

Allthough, the TV-show added a bit more juice to it, but you get the point.

2 Name: Secret Admirer : 2005-11-10 14:32 ID:XUOg14vc

Okay, giving it the benefit of the doubt that it really did happen (I'm one of those who thinks it was a sham from the start, frankly), it was a one-in-a-million occurrence. Trying to take "inspiration" from it will get you nowhere. You might as well take inspiration from someone struck by lightning.

>>2
What?
There's nothing wrong with getting inspiration from Densha. Why do you think so many people like it? Because they can relate to the main character so very well. He even has the same hobbies and problems as lots of us do. But, he's overcome his problems, the ones that we can't, and found a really sweet girl to be with. While I think this thread is stupid, I still think it's very possible to gain courage from Densha - in fact, I've done it a few times to be honest, when bringing up more touchy subjects with my girlfriend :P.

DIfferent things inspire different people. I admit that I was inspired from this show. /shrug

"Why do you think so many people like it? Because they can relate to the main character so very well." This is why I liked Densha Otoko, and why I stopped watching anime. Everything in anime is so cliche and wacky. The last anime I liked was Please Teacher, and Please Twins made me so disgusted. To go from a somewhat unique anime that was more about the main characters and their emotional evolution, to a cliched incestuous harem turned me off of anime forever.

6 Name: Gordy : 2005-11-11 01:54 ID:Bkf3r59F

Although, I didn't like the whole "it was just a little lie" "sub"plot in the TV show.

7 Name: Secret Admirer : 2005-11-11 03:25 ID:FRm6w+xK

Like Densha was, my "age = years without a girlfriend" and I'm way older then him. For many reasons I expect to die without ever having a girlfriend. I've come to be okay with that. Then I watched the Densha Otoko tv show and read the thread. Now that part of me that says, "I wish I had a girlfriend" came back. It's time for my rational self to smash that feeling down again.

8 Name: Secret Admirer : 2005-11-11 05:18 ID:XUOg14vc

Okay, let me elaborate on what I said in >>2 a bit. Fine, you can be inspired to build up your confidence and find the love of your life or whatever by Densha Otoko, but you should not expect what happened in the show to happen to you. Opportunities to meet members of your preferred gender abound, but do not expect for one to just fall into your arms like that, especially if you're as dorky and unattractive as Densha and the other person is as pretty and rich as Hermes. So I guess it's okay to be "inspired" by it, but spending the rest of your life waiting for something like that to happen to you is folly.

9 Name: 3 : 2005-11-11 05:53 ID:Heaven

>>8
Of course, I don't think anyone is just sitting around waiting, I think they're just wishing and hoping, and being able to more courages things from the show. Honestly, people don't have a chance anyway or are just using densha for their personal inspiration.

10 Name: Secret Admirer : 2005-11-11 08:47 ID:uHbG9Nus

I believe everyone has a chance for everything in his life, but will one have courage enough to get what one wants? It depends on how much effort that you would take or put in to do it. It depends on the worthwhile result that one values and longs for. It depends on oneself.

11 Name: Secret Admirer : 2005-11-12 15:43 ID:sC9uoJhR

After reading (some of -- I have to read them in English, and thus must wait for the translation) the original Densha Otoko thread, I think something a lot of people fail to realize is that Hermes had her sights set on Densha from the beginning.

Yes, women can develop crushes too, guys. And while most Japanese women want a guy who is rich, handsome, or both, what women are really keyed on is Good Provider Behaviors. Densha having the stones to stand up to the guy on the train impressed her; their relationship being a success was mostly him failing to screw it up, with the aid of the nichanners.

I certainly concede that it could be a hoax, but if you take the viewpoint that she was pursuing him, the whole thing is a hell of a lot more plausible.

12 Name: Secret Admirer : 2005-11-12 16:24 ID:Heaven

Pursuing him in that feminine "lead him on but let him think he's the one pursuing" manner?

13 Name: Secret Admirer : 2005-11-13 02:42 ID:3Lb8ReKq

>>11

You also have to remember that in Japanese culture, if you are 25 and still not in a serious relationship / married, you are considered an old maid. That could also have been part of the equation.

The world needs more women like you.

I suck at getting hints (I've been told this by friends) and have missed out on quite a few opportunities because I usually think that there's no way in hell OO-san would like me.

19 Name: Last Renegade : 2005-12-04 07:25 ID:Eub5qQ5n

obbIlUm0: Yeah, trying to read women is very dificult for us akward guys like Densha Otoko.

The one I am currently with had a think for me since I came accross her at a Halloween gathering at the community college and she freaked out since I noticed her Inu Yasha plush while blurting out "INU YASHA!"

This was in 2002 and I dressed up as Tommy Vercetti from Grand Theft Auto Vice City.

Even thought she was a larger woman, she looked kind of cute but didn't think about her much.

In a few months, I saw her again but I was hanging out with another female since I was getting desperate to be a relationship since I thought us nitta have terible luck with women and any old nice female is better than none. She (the girl I was hanging out with) tried to introduce me to somebody she knew and she showed me her friend to me one day near the end of the community college semester.

I noticed that there was a cutish girl sitting accross the girl I was hanging out with and I paid attention to what she was saying. We talked about anime for a good bit and I realized that I want to go out with her but I do not want to upset the person I was trying to court with at the time. Let's say that Christmas has past and not much went on except the exchange of emails.

I saw the anime fan girl in January and I realized that I have a chance to date her but I am not sure if she is interested. I decided to ask her out on a date on the 10th of feburary but school was snowed out so the next day was the 14th.

To make a long story short, we had Chinese, spoiled her with some PSone games, and she had her first kiss. Man that was great memories and we shared more until I moved last year. I still try to meet up with her face to face but with my work and her school, things are preaty bad at the moment.

I miss her so badly despite we talk to each other online every day. I read that she lost some weight too. I just hope not too much.

Lesson for us guys, we need to notice what women are thinking and not just by acting. That's why I clearly stated my intentions in dating my current girlfriend. I made it official during the first date by introducing her at a game store as my girlfriend. Man she was shocked but in a good way.

I just hope there is a happy ending to this story.

BTW
Yes I do own 360teevee.com but I haven't had time or energy to make videos yet.

>>18 I totally agree with you that girls should be more direct.

I sort of share the same problem too, just that I always find myself seeing the hints when I've come home to reflect on what has happened in the day. Thus, I've failed many times when I try to court when the girl has moved on.

Hopefully that's not going to occur with this one girl that's around me currently. Apparently one of my friends ((who is better at seeing hints than me shredding planes in my Flight sims)) says she's hinting at me. I personally am just going to see how she is around me, I won't try anything since it appears I've failed when I have tried ((Maybe I try too hard)).

I LOVED Densha Otoko, but the cynic in me was screaming out how impossible it could be at certain points in the show.

Take the start for eg, Densha's stuttering at a simple thank you call should have caused the warning flags and signals to spring up in Hermes' head.

And Hermes is very often the aggressor in their r/s. how often does that happen WITH AN OTAKU?

BUT, I do agree that we all should draw from Densha's determination and bravery, THOUGH we should not allow his success despite his social inability to cloud our judgment and fill us with illusions of grandeur.

27 Name: Zing : 2005-12-20 22:43 ID:/p2Fk894

That's the problem, isn't it. Guys really require that directness, and geeks/otaku even more so. Not saying anything is like slowly roasting the poor guy over a barbeque, and he ends up missing out on opportunities (true story.)

um ive been a lurker on 4ch for a while so please dont FLAME...seeing that you guys are familiar with Densha i decided to post in this thread rather then the others...sheesh, anyways at Borders book shop today i while looking through some Manga, a young lady approched me and asked what are some good titles. Being very pretty...i was surprised that she even was interested in it...UMMM VERY PRETTY. I thought it may have been a ploy to make me look like a loser, as my self esteem is so low that i am so paranoid at anythought of anyone who approches me...(i always think the worst of people, due to past exp.) She said she had recently gotten to watch an anime that intrigued her Gokusen, on a local channeL, and through research on the net, found out about the Gokusen manga. I am familiar with Gokusen, but Borders is not the kind of store that carries the title (as of i know, no english translations except fan-translations are avalible) so i told her that the only way was to look on the internet, and i told her of a particular site. Looking dismayed she asked if it be possible to send her the link. "Welll of course but i dont know it off hand...do you have myspace or an email account??" "Yes i do "aoilwdaijdad@piajdpaodapd.com"<<<<private of course. ^-^

she then said "you seem to know alot about this could you recommend anymore titles??" i told her that i would be able to tell her and ill send em along with the linkn to the fan...site. She looked as if she wanted me too continue to talk to her...i saw that after an awkward silence...so i blurted out, well i want some coffee would you like some, and i can right them down for you>?" i was surprised at my boldness, i have had relationships before...but for 3 years i have had no contact with women...or the general outside world at all, i go to a book store very late at night or early in the morning........uggh this is going to get long ill wait to see if anyone actually replies.

I just came to this message board yesterday after watching all of Densha Otoko for the first time. I do have to say that some of the events in there are quite impossible to beleive but there are actual people out here on the internet that will support you with your biggest problems if you just trust them. I've been involved in online communities for quite some time now, but none like a love message board or any sort of self help thing. While watching it I was reminded of myself being one of the "flamers" on the internet, putting others down in there worst of times, and maybe that's not the right thing to do if they're being truely sincere and not just looking for attention. So I promise on this board to not be a flamer.

I've heard that a person's true character is the most attractive thing, but I could be wrong about that as it doesn't always work. It's worked relatively okay for me in that I get less of those "uncomfortable silences" XD but that's as far as it's taken me so far.

If we're lucky, it may be the beginning of a trend.

While American comics have traditionally been for a male-only audience, Japanese manga is starting to completely change the views on comics simply because manga also appeals to girls.

Given proper exposure, manga may grow considerably as a part of American culture. And, given the fact that the best sources of information on manga tend to be American otaku like us, we end up as middlemen of sorts. Who says we can't use that to our advantage?

Of course, it's going to take lots of time for the changes to start being noticable, but it's a nice thought nonetheless.

Japanese comics have been made for boys and girls, and to be enjoyed by people of all ages for decades. American comics are usually aimed towards younger audiences and primarily male, or for a more specialized audience (geeks). Manga in Japan is treated the same way as books are here. There are books made specifically for young children, boys, girls, and adults, but even the stories made for young children can be enjoyed by older people. Understand?

Also, I assume you've been under a rock for the last, oh, 6 years or so, but anime and manga is huge in America. You can't fucking turn around without seeing shitty ass Inuyasha and all that fucking crap all over the place. It's cool to be Japanese in the United States, using chopsticks (even though you can't hold shit for more than two seconds) and eating sushi (though you hate it and most likely think it tastes like shit), wearing your goddamn kuroneko hats you got at the mall, carrying around stacks of manga, and pretending you speak Japanese and call yourself -chan.

Also, you aren't better than anyone else because you know how to get crap comics off the interweb.

Has anyone ever considered doing a Densha movie or film project set in the US? I think a lot of American Audiences would like the story, and the characters, but wouldn't get the Japanese references. Like mo-e for example. (Though that was totaly funny when they recorded Hermes saying "mo-e?")

But my point is that parallels do exist here, Geeks for Otaku, and other distinctions. The story is universaly good. I think American audiences would really love to see it in a manner they can relate to.

Of course I think we should all learn more about other cultures, but trying to convince 60 million Americans they have to learn more about Japanese culture would be a bigger challange than an American adaptation, sad as that is.

Whoa, flashback. Did anyone see the movie "Can't Buy Me Love," from the 80's? Totaly reminds me of all this in a way.

sounds funny though but watching Densha Otoko gives me a bit of courage!! I wonder where the real densha is!~ i would be so surprised to see him in this thread again...

66 Name: Secret Admirer : 2006-02-27 04:02 ID:FdGQj4sr

yeah i wonder what happened to the real life Densha, is he still with Hermes

67 Name: benson_2009 : 2006-02-27 07:15 ID:PkNMdC3n

apparently i heard Densha is stil with Hermes according to wikipedia

68 Name: Secret Admirer : 2006-02-27 13:43 ID:Heaven

It was on wikipedia, it must be true! The thing probably never happened in the first place.

69 Name: Secret Admirer : 2006-02-28 02:09 ID:dae++xqM

and if he really is still with Hermes, you know he's finally done playing with the internet as he'd be occupied playing with something else... ;-)

70 Name: benson_2009 : 2006-02-28 07:43 ID:PkNMdC3n

rofl! alot of people dont think its real cos they say its impossible for that to happen, heck i stil think its true!

I wrote that Wikipedia blurb so I know you are misquoting.

"Some attest to the truth of the story, such as the TV series producers who got in contact with Densha Otoko, but it has not been proven that the story was authentic from start to finish."

:v

I've recently started watching Densha Otoko and god help me I ended up seeking out a discussion board like this just because of the show. Just out of curiosity if anything.

As far as the validity of the show is concerned, I really don't care. I'd much rather believe that it happened then that it didn't, and even if it didn't happen, the show is still fun to watch.

It inspires me really, not really romantically (My age dosen't equal my years being single, but I'm not that far ahead of Densha by any means. ^^; ) but as an aspring writer/artist, it does inspire me creatively. It makes me want to both be a better geek and to work hard at my goals in life.

If a mere television show can do that? Then I can't say anything bad about it.

73 Name: dreamerboy : 2006-03-02 09:52 ID:IOB8/KjS

i agree with jstars. i think this show changes peoples perspectives about the way otaku's are being portrayed for the past couple of years. i just hope this trend lasts long :-/

Two more eps and the "Special" left and I'll be finished with Densha, I want to watch more but It's so late... ^^

75 Name: Secret Admirer : 2006-03-04 04:08 ID:ZU19Lgia

i'v seen the last epp but not the movie and the alternate ending, am i missing out??

76 Name: Jstars : 2006-03-04 08:19 ID:/WQLCZCf

The movie was done seperate from the tv show, so you can live without it

The alternate ending isn't an alternate ending, but rather deals with Yamada's friends and the Tigers' Fan. At the very end you get to see Yamada and Saori spending some time with each other on their vacation.

Densha gives those people who cant get a gf the courage to try, one of my friend who has no luck with girls, he watched Densha and was so touched that he siad the show gave him courage to try one more time. although no one knowss if the story is true or not but i beleive its true, so all u OtaKus! go for it!! lol xD

79 Name: Jitensha Otoko : 2006-03-12 02:46 ID:BbLf9A0m

Lol, actually many people think that is actually true, and that densha is still with hermes. In a fansub as a joke they say that you should pay a drunken man to bug a nice lady in the train so you can play hero and say "SSsstop it...."LOL.

I know this is an old thread and I probably shouldn't bump this but I have to say this.

I am/was exactly like Densha was. This was of course before the TV show however. I am/was a huge Otaku who had a ton of Anime, Games, and Toys, My room was like his room when I was 24 (I'm 31 now).

I always had a problem talking to girls because I was shy and feared rejection. I was always turned down by girls when I was in school and I was picked on all the time and got in a ton of fights. Not for being an Otaku but because I was a small kid and henceforth and easy target. But I digress.

I managed to somehow work up the stones to put out an on-line personal ad back when things like Match.com where new and more importantly completely free. I got a few replies but one girl kept replying to me and we E-mailed a lot. Then came the faithful day we met and yes he was exactly like “Hermes”. She was beautiful, refined, and just a very sweet person. I then because nervous because I knew at some point I would have to take her back to my place. And that she would see my wall scrolls, my anime toys on the bookshelf, the bookshelves full of anime and manga, the CD rack full of video games and all the game systems I had hooked to my TV.

I was scared that I would lose what was becoming the best relationship in my life however I also knew that I could/should not hide who and what I am/was. Needless to say she was a bit well… Shocked when she saw my room. I saw this and my heart sunk. So I just came out with it. “Umm I know my room is a bit much” she just looked back and said “I think it’s nice” and things went well from there. I wound up taking her to her first con later that year and she loved it. We got married a year later and we have been married ever since then (going on about 6 years now).

The thing is be who you are, Otaku or otherwise. If someone likes you they will stay by you no matter what (unless you are into illegal things that is) just be natural.

The funny thing is we started watching Densha Otoko and we are just finished Episode 8. My wife loves the show because “They are both like us”. So I see no reason for anyone not to derive inspiration from it. Is it a Bible to live by? Not quite. Is there some inspiration to be gathered from it? Yes there is.

So, I feel like a goon for bumping this, but like alot of you here, I too, was and still am inspired by Densha Otoko. Thing is, I wasn't really looking for this place, but I'm glad I found it. I think its great that the tv show/movie/whatever it was, inspired this many people to get out here and support eachother.

It doesn't matter if the story is real or not (on a personal note, I do believe it could happen, weirder things have happend) it's the fact that it speaks to so many people, and it isnt speaking to them from so cheesed out macho fantasy angle, its speaking to them from the shy, never leave the house, anime guys. I think we should keep this whole thing going, and offer support to any of those who have the balls to put their personal life out in the open, and on the internet of all places. I know now that since I have found this place I will most definitely be lurking around offering what advice I can to my fellow geeks, and asking for help when I get stuck too.

If we want this to work for us like it did for Densha, we have to believe it will, and put our brains together when helping some one out. wow that sounded gay.

Well.....I'm only 14 years old and Densha Otoko was the reason why I went on this forum site, not only that but it too gave me courage to live for tomorrow, to take action when needed, and know where to go in need of help. I have an aspiration of becoming a movie director and I have some projects I'd like to make.(please don't take these idea's away other aspiring directors! Please.) Love Hina, Rival Schools, Calvin & Hobbs, and Battle Royale(don't worry! It won't be based on the manga nor movie! It will have the same plot though.Different characters and what not. America had forseen the horror of the BR act and decided to put it to good use. So they announced that every Senior of a certain HighSchool class will go toe to toe against another in a fight of survival, teamwork, and trust. The class that wins will be offered 1,000,000 to every student(alive) so that they may start there new lives away from HighSchool and into the real world!)

Being a fan of anime. I was really suprised when I first saw the series. It was shown on my local television channel and I knew nothing about it. But once the anime opening started, I was instantly hooked (either there was no subtitles and I knew very little Japanese). I saw the movie after I completed the series. Overall a great movie about how people can do anything with support from others.
