I rather do it because 1) you're actually funny, or 2) I'm not paying attention. Usually I'll mix it with lots of nodding and phrases like, "Oh yeah," and "Uh-huh." If the tone of your voice sounds negative I'll tilt my head to make you think I'm sympathizing with you.
