[Wrong way] Going from a close to a long-distance relationship [Curious] (5)

There's a lot of talk about LDRs on this board -- whether they're worth it, how to handle them, etc. I was wondering if anyone here had advice or experience to share about transitioning from a strong, established, close-proximity relationship with someone to a long-distance relationship with that person fortified by Skype, instant messaging, email and letters.

  • Are there any common pitfalls to avoid? (Being too needy, clingy, etc.)
  • Are there are particular difficulties in communication?
  • What's the best way to stay in someone's life, romantically, despite distance?

(By the way, yes, both parties have mutually agreed to this and we're planning to visit each other once a year for two/three weeks. We have the funds to do this.)

I don't think it's gonna work, dude, unless you're also best friends and the long distance is only for a few months.

Partners aren't meant to be apart. You'd better reconcile yourself to this fact.

I wouldn't be as definitive as >>2, but the duration of the long-distance thing is important.

I think if you are to pull it off, you must have a defined period, and have for main objective to get back together as soon as possible.

The person who's 'going away' MUST always reassure and provide a sense of security for the one 'left behind'.

i don't care how confident or secure someone is...if their partner is miles away hanging out and having life changing experiences with loads of new people...its still gonna suck.

Doesn't work. I've tried 3 and all 3 times ended miserably.
