Untranslated manga (95)

Here's a chance to complain about all the awesome manga that nobody's translating! I'll go first, because I LOVE complaining!

* Cloth Road. Story by Kurata Hideyuki of Read or Die fame, and art by Okama (http://okama.nicomi.com/). Runs in Ultra Jump.
* Propeller Heaven by Tomizawa Hitoshi, who did Alien 9 and Milk Closet. I love both of those, and I really want to read this one. Kotonoha has given some indication that he may do it. Also from Ultra Jump, I believe.
* Discommunication, by Riichi Ueshiba. His later manga, Yume Tsukai, has been at least partially translated, but his previous long-running (some 17 volumes in all) manga Discommunication remains untranslated. Ran in Afternoon, info here: http://www.kodanclub.com/cgi-local/comic.cgi?id=009-00096-01-013

Anything AstCd2 thinks is good.

Given that I can't read Japanese, I'll have to defer judgement... :'(

On the other hand, I certainly can complain about certain currently-translated series that I believe are underrated.

4 Name: Anonymous 2004-11-10 17:15 ID:y3qnDYNQ [Del]

Has the You're Under Arrest manga been completely translated? All I can find is a handful of comics.

5 Name: Anonymous 2004-11-12 03:33 ID:ewoLdZRQ [Del]

Hm, I don't read scanslations, but some of my favorites have never been completely translated...

Katte ni Kaizou (Kohji Kumeta)- translation dropped after some point in volume 2, understandable though, it's hard to translate.

NANA - I didn't read the translation, but I think it also stopped. Could be wrong..

Sexy Comando Gaiden Sugoi yo! Masaru-san -100% lol

Any of Conami Shoko's comics, especially Anghel Blood, Arashi wo Yobu Otoko, Yo no Hana Tsubame, or Futsu no Renai.

Dragon Half - Hasn't been done yet right? Why on earth not?

Kingyo Chuuihou - Pure cuteness and hillarity, I can understand why the anime isn't fansubbed yet since it's somewhat hard to get, but the manga is also great~

X (peke) - Old school 4 panel craziness

Minamino Mashiro's comics - I'm sure there's not a lot of BL readers here, but boys playing with puppies = win in my book~

Gin no Yuusha - I know I'm listing a lot of shoujo manga.. (>_>) But it's a nice fantasy story, I think people would like it.

Pugyuru - I haven't read the manga yet, but I found the anime hillarious. (I'm sure not everyone agrees with me there, though.)

But since I don't read scanslations (though I do read some USA releases), sorry if any of these are translated and I don't know about it~ I'm sure I'll think of stuff to add later, too.

>>4
Yeah I don't know about that either. Dark Horse was a total pain back then, they'd release a million individual issues numbered as mini series like 1 of 4, or whatever. I don't think they ever put out a graphic novel of YUA.

Speaking of which, I still haven't found all the old issues of Fantastic Panic (T_T) But finding the English version is actually easier than finding the Japanese, I wonder if it ever finished (in either version)...

6 Name: !WAHa.06x36 2004-11-12 13:39 ID:vxcHXb0w [Del]

I have scans of the two volumes of Pugyuru manga, and it is, if possible, even more wrong than the anime. I wasn't so damn lazy, I might try translating it myself.

Hasn't been done right yet... there's been at least a couple of attempts, but they didn't seem to get that far. I'd love to see more of Ryusuke Mita's other stuff like Darkhair Captured, as well.

Pugyuru looks interesting. Is it all in 4-panel comic format?

15 Name: Random Manga Otaku 05/02/05(Sat)09:27 ID:Heaven

I want to recommend "Shigurui" as samurai's manga.
It differs greatly from "Rurouni Kenshin" because of showing dark side of samurai.
If you like "BERSERK", it will be able to enjoy this cartoon.

In general, I wouldn't mind subbing some shoujo manga. But what I really want is something fairly kid-safe (pre-teen level). See, I wouldn't mind being able to read it to my kids, too.

No, I can't take this anymore - why is this funny? I tried watching a few episodes of the anime, and I thought every joke was forced and overall the show was just mildly embarrassing. So what gives?

the closest thing the US ever got to NB was during the 80's when viz translated a part of the Kamui saga...

i really wish more old manga would be translated. stuff like ashita no joe, kintaro of the graveyard, tetsujin-28, gaki deka... what really frustrates me is that some of the most popular "classic" artists will probably never be imported into the US. guys like sampei shirato, fujio akatsuka, kazuo umezu, go nagai, leiji matsumoto...

Many older mangas (though not nearly enough) have been translated into French. The works of all but one of the authors you mentioned can be found on amazon.fr, and who knows what can be found elsewhere.

I learned French when I found out that the Phoenix translation was being cancelled. It has not been cancelled in French :) It is the easiest language for an English speaker to learn, and certainly easier than Japanese.

Hello.
Im japanese.I have some question.
Will you buy " manga comics" that is written by
Japanese minor manga writers(including DOZIN)?
and,
How much do you spend money for such a manga book?

51 Name: Random Manga Otaku 2006-02-16 10:16 ID:ibAAkt4R

I dont know

52 Name: Random Manga Otaku 2006-02-16 13:51 ID:Heaven

>>50

It's very hard to buy doujinshi outside of Japan. Some events in the US have people who buy them from Japan and re-sell, and there are a few place to buy online, but mostly it is very hard. Personally, I don't live in the US, which makes it even harder, but I did get a friend to buy some yoshitoshi ABe books for me.

Untranslated manga is not very popular, and only really big fans will usually buy them. Of coures, with ero doujinshi you don't really need to understand the text, so those are a bit more popular.

53 Name: 50 2006-02-17 02:20 ID:Heaven

55 Name: Random Manga Otaku 2006-02-17 13:50 ID:Heaven

>>53-54

Kunrei-siki romanization puts the word as "dozin". Waapuro romanization is "doujin". Waapuro is the most popular among English speakers on the net, but Kunrei-siki is quite popular with Japanese speakers.

>>53, where would you sell it?

56 Name: Random Manga Otaku 2006-02-18 04:53 ID:neg4n2Zp

>>54 scanlated site I checked now.It make me sad.

>>55 We will buy them in net and send the book.non-digital.

Im surprised to see "Waapuro"....

57 Name: Random Manga Otaku 2006-02-18 22:13 ID:GC0tXZs/

Don't be too discouraged. Scanlations are produced because there's no other source for a translated version. When a commercial translator announces that they purchased the rights to a manga, scanlations usually stop. Unless it's a very popular series like Naruto, where you have a large number of people who can't wait for the translated volumes. There is a market for non-digital translated manga.

I would like to buy funny, high quality doujin(dozin?). A few volumes of Comic Party anthology comics were translated years ago, and I was sad when I learned how many volumes were left untranslated.

Tankouban(tankobon?) manga volumes sell for $10-14 US dollars in North America, so I guess I would expect a price in that range. I don't know about other formats. Do you mean you would translate individual comics or collected volumes?

58 Name: Random Manga Otaku 2006-02-19 03:35 ID:neg4n2Zp

>>57 Thank you!
We will negotiate some writters who make original douzin manga, and issue them translated for magazine.
But it is just a plan now.
We have some probrems.
A copyright,cost,and price.
So,Which Do you read? original manga or
parody like that(NARUTO for example)

60 Name: Random Manga Otaku 2006-02-19 04:33 ID:817Wcg0Q

What kind of writers are you going to get? Find native English speakers please :v

Now, about copyright: As long as you are selling from Japan there is no problem with copyright, because in Japan of course anyone can make doujin, and nobody pursues copyright across borders. But if you go to an American anime con and try to sell there, you might get in trouble.

Doujinshi production may not be allowed in the United States.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Pirates

As for cost and price, manga in the United States usually cost $10. You could try $20 but that would significantly drop sales.

61 Name: Kakanian 2006-02-19 13:43 ID:ilM7nxRI

I'd like to vioce some complains too.

*Hanafuda and "Roll Playing Simulator School" from Okama are still untranslated. I'd especially like to read the second one as it seems to overflow with that particular energy that distinguishes his illustrations.

*Anything from KYODAI Nishioka.

*And Same Hat should really do some more Kazuichi Hanawa. He's great even though his manga are really revolting.
