i used to read love roma waaay before it became popular. i didn't hear anything about the manga before i picked it up. if no one ever saw me read that one day, none of the people i know would have ever heard of it. then i found out that it was pretty common after 3 weeks of my picking it up.

so i thought i might share a few mangas that i don't think are that common and maybe discover some from those posting here ^_^

x-day (a group of people facing problems decide to blow up their school - more drama than anything)
translucent (a girl with a disease that makes her invisible learns to live with her sickness growing up)
confidential confessions (dealing with the dark side of high school; rape, blackmail, abuse, bullying, etc)
welcome to the NHK (waaay better than the anime; about life as a hikkikomori)
anne freaks (google it, hard to describe)
mitsukazu mihara: the embalmer (predjudice in japan about embalmers and the symbolism of embalming)
MSG ecole du ciel (training as a female pilot with a history with the zeons)

what did you guys discover??

everything by osamu tezuka that isn't astro boy

maybe it's more popular now that it's actually getting published in english, but i often hear "who the fuck is black jack?" from people

hmm... not sure what else... i liked hitsuji no uta (aka lament of the lamb) but then tokyopop raped it and shat on its corpse

how about spiral: bonds of reasoning?

If you want to bitch about NHK manga being waaay better than the anime, how about the fact that the original novel is waaay better than the manga?

For me, it's
Firefighter Daigo(one of the rare good shonen. Full of hot blood and manly spirit, with no power levels so far.)
Emma(well, no one outside this forum read it)
Louie the Rune Soldier(fun little fantasy comedy)
Project X - Datsun 240Z(fascinating story about the creation of a sports car)

Japan Tengu Party Illustrated, and Nasu, both from Kuroda Io. I didn't like Sexy Voice and Robo that much tough :/ it kind of disappointed me.
Anything by Junji Ito - Uzumaki, Tomie, The mistery of the Amigara Fault, etc
Naoki Urasawa - 20th century boys, PLUTO, Monster (he also has other works, but I've not read them yet)
Maya's Funeral procession was interesting, but nothing too amazing. Makes for a nice read tough. Zashiki Onna was also good.
