just out of curiosity here - how much of your digital music collection was obtained legally (ie from legal downloads, or ripped from physical media that you own) and how much was obtained illegally? is anyone here 100% legal or 100% illegal?
i couldn't even begin to estimate myself, especially considering that i don't have the hard drive with most of my music on it, but i'd say there's quite a lot more illegal stuff on there. i do, though, usually buy something if i like it, or if i think i might like it but i can't find it (i operate by the general rule that if i can't find an artist's music on certain popular p2p network then they're probably obscure enough that they need my support)

I'd say 40% of my music was ripped from my personal CDs, and maybe another 10% from others' CDs. The rest of my songs were illegally downloaded.

98% illegal, I guess. But I'll buy a lot of what I have right now when I have a job, and the monies that come with it.
Also there's way too much of the stuff I listen that I can't find in regular disc stores (underground, foreign, or just way too old).

However, probably only about 10% of my 90% of illegal stuff would even be possible for me to obtain legally - I listen mostly to doujin arrange music, much of which was only ever offered for sale at a single Comiket or other convention in Japan, long since past.
Hm, I've downloaded tons of music from torrent sites, but I rarely listen to most of it. By number of listens, probably 30% or less is pirated OR bought. I love netlabel music and self-releasing artists.
Among music that was released traditionally on CD, probably 90% of it is pirated, but somewhat less (80% maybe?) by number of listens.
I don't feel bad about downloading (or uploading) music for free, but I do feel bad about supporting artists/publishers that don't want me to share. I've contacted and donated to several artists in lieu of buying their CDs -- and told them why I was doing it.
Releases directly to bittorrent --the music equivalent of Steal This Film II, which is getting much publicity now-- are the future.

What clears you morally is that there is absolutely nothing morally wrong about copying. Copying is how all culture spreads and develops, how new inventions and discoveries are made. Without copying, there would be no progress. Besides, every living organism is literally a copying machine... Think about it.
If you don't pay music artists, that's not morally wrong. It just might be economically stupid because you're not supporting the creation of music you like.
However, still note that a widely pirated artist has it much better than a widely ignored artist. Look at each album in your collection. If you couldn't have pirated that, would you have bought the album? Or would you have never heard it?
Most people will say the latter most of the time. Just as people take far more pictures with digital cameras than they ever did with film, filesharing enables us to explore much more music than we could before. That's not immoral, that's a great thing.
Increasingly, the only thing scarce in music is the audience. What musicians have to fear most is obscurity.

probably about 5% legal :S I'm not proud of it, but since my games are 100% legal I don't have much money to spend on music...
About 3/4 of it was obtained illegally, but about half of that is stuff that I can't actually get this side of the world. Stuff that's obscure even in Japan, let alone America.
100% illegal if it's not under a CC license.
If I were to get my music illegally, I'd rip it from streaming audio, so no recording industry could trace it (or would bother to look into a not-widespread method of piracy they're probably totally ignorant about).
I've only ever downloaded and listened to one album illegally. Nearly everything I own is either old instrumental songs free to download to age which I listen to when I have to concentrate on games or work, or from bands that are confident enough in their manhood to release their work freely.
Mostly legal here. I mainly listen to remix stuff, and the stuff I download is mostly foreign and old stuff that would be too costly to import on a regular basis.

I only buy music if i cant find it online or if i NEED the high quality version... or, if it's just one of those albums you need to buy, that it would be a disgrace to the album if you downloaded it (By The Way, Californication, H.A.A.R.P, and Black Holes and Revelations)
I would say nearly 100% of mine. Except for a VERY few albums. (Metallica Black Album, Some red hot chili peppers, and Nada Surf) I would also say the average retention time for most music is about 2 weeks. Net radio is where I get most of my stuff nowadays.
I'm probably 80% illegal. The 20% that's legal was downloaded from free artists.
ofc i'm not fucking legal. I'm 110% illegal, i hardly buy anything..if is free..i'm getting it free. Save tons of money and fight the evil consumer society by not buying anything but pissing it off on drugs
