That's pretty much what I thought too -- except, in 1997, The Smashing Pumpkins weren't doing angst-alternative. That was when they were recording "Adore", which approximates what would now be called emo. You must have meant 1999 or 2000.

No, in 1999 and 2000 they were in their MACHINA/The Machines of God phase, which approximates what would be called 'braindead concept electro-art-alt-rock'. You must have meant 1994 or 1995.

I had really low expectations for Zeitgeist. It exceeded them, but that was not hard to do. Nothing like the Pumpkins in their prime, but a few cool songs, and "Doomsday Clock" did get stuck in my head at one point.
