Anonymous posting (82)

So how often do you people with names or tripcodes post anonymously?

2 Name: 404 - Name Not Found 2005-09-24 09:25 ID:wxG1VXN9

I pretty much post nameless all the time.
I don't see the use for names mostly and I think there are more often than not just creating drama and problems instead of contributing something useful or funny.

Also, this thread is relevant to my interests:

True, but there are definitely some "personalities" on the boards, and I was wondering whether they kept using them through laziness or if they occasionally took the effort to erase the name..

5 Name: lolocaust!rsvcwx6Axc 2005-09-25 07:39 ID:4Mdm2f+g

I occasionally take the effort to put my name in the name field.

6 Name: dmpk2k!hinhT6kz2E 2005-09-25 08:37 ID:Heaven

I occasionally take the effort to remove my name in the name field.

7 Name: 404 - Name Not Found 2005-09-25 10:51 ID:Heaven

I use a handle perhaps twice or trice a month, maybe not. There's usually no need for it, lolocaust taught me that lesson a long time ago.

8 Name: hotaru!hoTarufiRE 2005-09-25 13:21 ID:jPDcnBPw

i took the effort to put my name in the name field for this post. i almost never use a name anymore... it's so much easier to post anonymously...

9 Name: hotaru!hoTarufiRE 2005-09-25 13:22 ID:Heaven

oh, and i meant to put "sage" in the link field but forgot... sorry if anyone thought i added anything useful to this thread.

10 Name: 404 - Name Not Found 2005-09-25 14:40 ID:gQ7dlTDA

I take out or put in my name on purpose sometimes, and other times I just leave it in if it was already there, or leave it out if wasn't. If I'm just posting shit, that usually means Anonymous Sage. Also, if I'm going to criticize someone, I usually do it anonymously, because I don't want to pretend that whatever fame I might have would make my opinion worth any more or less than anyone else's.

11 Name: 404 - Name Not Found 2005-09-25 14:42 ID:Heaven

My name is Squeeks and most posts that I make are without my name or trip. I can't use capcodes either anymore, and I only ever used them to give a more "official word" when posting stuff, so people knew it was an admin and not another user.

12 Name: 404 - Name Not Found 2005-09-25 14:54 ID:Heaven

I'll only use a name when im referencing that I posted something else within the same topic, and that name would just be the post number.

I do that often too.
It's never happened on 4-ch but a few times on 4chan i've used a name because I saw another friend of mine or something post. Only happened a few times though, my handle is used mostly for other, more traditional forums, irc, instant messaging applications, etc.

I never post anonymously.

I use trip only if i feel it's important that someone doesn't impersonate me later on in that thread and even then i keep the name the default one of that section.

I post anonymously quite often, and additionally have a really crappy other name I use in /dqn.

35 Name: 404 - Name Not Found : 2006-08-17 06:57 ID:WKfQA2mE

If I ever start a thread where I need to be identified later in that thread, I'll use a tripcode. However, I won't use a name like username#password, i'll just do #password

36 Name: 404 - Name Not Found : 2006-08-20 19:38 ID:7inGDCtR

I post anonymously most of the time and rareley use my name... basically I only use it when I expect to/want to get trolled/flamed in DQN for the fun of it. Also, I don't use Tripcodes. I guess that means that you should just DISREGARD THAT, I SUCK COCKS!

IMO, names have no real use in any sort of actual discussion, while tripcodes actually have (What >>35 said).

heh, I've practically only been posting anonymously for the last few months.

In my *ch(an) history, I've used 2.5 other names aside from this one, and 2 other tripcodes. (One for a world4ch nick, and another for the wtfux /cams/ board)

Here's an interesting experiment in anonymous posting. This news aggregator site added a comments section for each article it collected, but it experienced slow growth. After a month, they were just shy of 200 posts per day. As with most sites it required registration. Even with that barrier to entry their automated moderation tool removed 4.5% of messages. They decided to test allowing posts without registration. Like most webmasters, they feared being overrun with trolls and spam. While usage jumped to about 1400 posts a day after a month, and soared over 5000 posts a day after 80 days, the rate of removed posts dropped to 2%. The called the effect the "Ni-channel paradox" and even quoted Shii's article. Good to see the theory holding up :)

Man, that's pretty awesome.

42 Name: 404 - Name Not Found : 2006-08-23 05:18 ID:DoCwznoy

I never post with a nick or tripcode. It's too much trouble for something so trivial.

43 Name: 404 - Name Not Found : 2006-08-23 12:39 ID:IE6W5mbo

I post as anon when I can, ## on 4chan (noname), ## on wakachan (no name - random trip) and posted as anonymouse on irc for a long time before deciding to get a nickname for IRC... when you make friends in such a way and have regular conversations a name becomes essential.

44 Name: 404 - Name Not Found : 2006-09-06 04:56 ID:iByQPXPN

Here's a question for those who consider yourself regulars of anonymous boards. Since you started using them, has your attitude towards registration to forums and in general changed?

I find myself more reluctant to make throwaway accounts or even use bugmenot ones although I do use the latter sometimes. Forums with unrestricted sig and avatar sizes have become nigh unreadable(not that they were all that easy before).

45 Name: 404 - Name Not Found : 2006-09-06 16:39 ID:Heaven

I wouldn't call myself a regular on this type of board, but since coming on here I have really seen the advantages of anonymous posting. I've never entered a name other than a post number to show which earlier post was mine, never even tried a tripcode. On the whole I feel more comfortable posting anonymously, thats not because I would want to post anything bad/illegal, just because I don't have to worry about what other people would think, its more relaxed.

I hate huge sigs and blinking avatars, and I often thank god for the wise vbulletin developer that decided to give the board a "light mode" where you can view posts without all that stuff.

Also, I posted with a tripcode for the first time yesterday. It was as MODD though, so I don't think that counts...

47 Name: 404 - Name Not Found : 2006-09-07 12:38 ID:wkbwr2FA

Huge blinking sigs and such sure are distracting, but what really kills me is how on that type of forum, you end up having about three sentences of actual content per screenful, the rest being avatars, sigs, sig quotes, posting stats, and so on.

Obviously the actual posts are not really important at all, given how little space is given to them.

You are not your fucking tripcode.

You are not your PC stats, your income or your Philosophy Major degree. You are not the size of your imageboard directory, or the amount of years you've spent watching anime. You are not your fucking postcount, and you're not your multi-layered sig with some half naked anime chick lying under your tripcode written in glorious comic sans.

Here, all you are is the text that you post. I think all 2chan ripoffs should be forced anon.

50 Name: 404 - Name Not Found : 2006-09-09 10:59 ID:TPmZ+gc1

>>49

I don't know about forced anon but anon should certainly be heavily encouraged.

51 Name: 404 - Name Not Found : 2006-09-09 14:54 ID:slWLCTPy

>>49
Forced anon is probably not a good idea for most boards.

There is a reason that the tripcode system exists: Sometimes, it is neccesary to be identified in a thread later on. That doesn't happen too often, but it happens, for example if you ask for advice, it might be a good idea to use a tripode so other people in the thread know who you are later on.

Also, just imagine: Fored anon on DQN... no MODD and all that, that would be a very bad thing, don't you think?

>>51
Not really. I mean, you can label that kinda stuff as "OP here". Even then it's not really relivant, questions get asked, and you either get flames or an answer. Who you are doesn't really matter.

56 Name: 404 - Name Not Found : 2006-09-11 10:41 ID:Heaven

I think forced anon is a silly idea, just like I think forced registration is. Also, several issues >>49 (rightly) points out are really just artifacts of implementation, and only tangentally have something to do with the issue of anonymity.

Too many people get anon vs name tangled up with something like kareha vs vbulletin.

I feel a bit strange rehashing a topic that's been beaten to death here though: http://wakaba.c3.cx/soc/kareha.pl/1110953600/

Psst... the ID code!

58 Name: 404 - Name Not Found : 2006-09-23 09:10 ID:Heaven

Another thing is that sometimes, especially on smaller boards, it is possible to tell the poster of each post just by its content.

For example, it is blatantly obvious that >>56 is WAHa.06x36

59 Name: !WAHa.06x36 : 2006-10-07 15:34 ID:Heaven

I'll agree that it is very possible, and I enjoy doing it myself, but unfortunately, you just failed at it.

I'd never end a sentence with a "though" without a comma in front of it.

The terrible thing that Anonymous had done was to persuade you the mere impulses, mere feelings, were of no account, while at the same time robbing you of all power over the material world. When once you were in the grip of Anonymous, what you felt or did not feel, what you did or refrained from doing, made literally no difference. Whatever happened you vanished, and neither you nor your action were ever heard of again. You were lifted clean out of the stream of history. And yet to the people of only two generations ago, this would not have seen all-important, because they were not attempting to alter history. They were governed by private loyalties which they did not question. What mattered were individual relationships, and a completely helpless gesture, an embrace, a tear, a word spoken to a dying man, could have value in itself. The namefags it suddenly occurred to him had remained in this condition. They were not loyal to a board or a website or a meme, they were loyal to one another. For the first time in life he did not despise the namefags or think of them merely as an inert force which one day spring to life and regenerate the world. The namefags had stayed human. They had not become hardened inside. They had held on to the primitive emotions which he himself had to re-learn by conscious effort. And in thinking this he remembered, without apparent relevance, how a few weeks ago he had seen a severed hand lying on the pavement and had snapped a photo and posted it on /b/ as though it had been a cabbage-stalk.
