That said, we're definitely in a state of moral panic regarding this issue and it ought to be addressed with some rational thinking for once. Do weird things happen? Oh yes and no doubt a lot of us know from personal experience. Everyone has that MILF neighbor/creepy uncle. We only hear of the awful negative consequences because we only hear of the worst possible cases of abuse. I'm sure minor incidents happen far more often than we're willing to admit and there's no way to have a discussion about it or study it given the consequences of admission (for both parties). There's something of a witch hunt aspect about even discussing the topic at the moment (notice this is saged; notice I called >>47 a creep).

The main thing the US could use right now is a sliding scale especially aimed at softening the age 18 barrier. By that I mean a person age 18 shouldn't be made a life-long sex offender because their partner is 17 (it does happen; some prosecutors like easy wins). Why not a three year sliding scale based around 18? This would more accurately reflect the realities of the age group rather than forming a red line between 18 year-olds and those under.
