WHEN Barack Obama, America’s newest presidential hopeful, was hit by allegations that he had attended a radical Islamic madrasah school as a boy in Indonesia, the claims spread like a virus through the media and internet.
It was a lie — the school was barely more religious than British church schools — but it was also a sign that Obama’s chances of winning the presidency depend to an unusual degree on his life story and character.
The race is on to define the gifted but little-known senator for Illinois and The Sunday Times can reveal that his heritage is far more diverse and astonishing than anything American voters have heard so far.
Obama, 45, has two half- sisters, one living in Britain, and five surviving half-brothers, the eldest of whom converted to Islam, and whose stories span the globe.
Nobody was more surprised to hear that Obama had reportedly been educated in a madrasah than Julia Suryakusuma, a close friend of his mother until her death from ovarian cancer in 1995.

Is Madrassa like what Christians have as "Sunday School"? Children going to learn about the Bible for an hour whilst Mom and Dad are at church, singing songs and all that?
Or is it a boarding school?
Madrassa is like this: ALLAHU AKHBAR, MEMORIZE THE KORAN OR U FAIL, DEATH TO JEWS, CHRISTIANS, AND ALL MISCELLANEOUS INFIDELS.

I read a book by a Persian author, her name was Irshad Manji. It's called "The Problem With Islam Today". Quite interesting, she attended a madrassa in Canada. It consisted of koranic studies. Basically, all students are required to memorize a certain portion of the Koran, by the end of a certain period of time. Theology class was sort of similar, except the Imam would tell them what the verses mean.
Having studied the Koran myself, I can say that it is a book with a severe case of schizophrenia. At one moment, Allah seems like the god of the New Testament, while at another moment, it describes how to divvy up loot after a battle. A whole "chapter" is devoted to it, its called 'Al-Anfal', the Spoils of War.
I'd like to get a hold of a copy of the Hadith, but I don't have the money to do so right now.

A Madrassa is more like an extreme Musslim verstion of a Christian private school. They are very well known for teaching young boys the radical and dangerus verstion of Islam.

No matter how strict they were, their students were not forced to believe in anything radical as you like to believe. Most of these schools are rather peaceful and have a extra Quran studies on the side.

How could he not be African American? His father is from Kenya. What else could he be?
They're calling him African-African-American, but since that sounds so bad they tend not bring it up.
It does sound bad. Why not just say Kenyan American?
why not just say "AMERICAN"??? who cares about the rest at all? If he's an American citizen, the previous bloodline kind of falls out. I'm not a Scot-Irish-Brit-German-Indian-American. Anyone born or naturalized here is nothing more and nothing less than an American.
