The new secretary general of Japan's governing Liberal Democratic Party is coming under fire for comparing the largest opposition party to the Nazis in Germany.

Taro Aso made the remark on Monday when he met the Upper House president to report on his assumption of the party post last week.

Aso reportedly said there are calls that the opposition Democratic Party should be given a chance to assume power. But he said things aren't that easy, and cited the Nazis in Germany as one example of a party rising to power in response to such calls.

The Democratic Party's Secretary General Yukio Hatoyama called the remark inexcusable.

Speaking later on Monday, Hatoyama said it was an affront not just to the party but to the people who are seeking a change of power, and demanded that Aso retract the remarks.

Aso later told reporters that he did not mean to liken the Democratic Party to the Nazis. He indicated that he was only trying to say that the opposition party should deliberate matters more seriously in the Upper House.
The chamber is controlled by the opposition bloc.
