A US passenger plane ditched into the Hudson River in New York City on Thursday after both engines failed. All 155 people on board were rescued.

The US Airways Airbus A320 made the water landing after it took off from New York's LaGuardia Airport bound for Charlotte, North Carolina.

Amid freezing weather, commuter ferries and other vessels came to the rescue, pulling all 150 passengers and 5 crew members to safety.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that the airplane apparently hit a flock of birds, causing its two engines to stop in midair.

An official of an air traffic controllers union told the Associated Press that the pilot reported double bird strikes and asked for an emergency landing
30 to 45 seconds after takeoff.

The US National Transportation Safety Board is sending investigators to look into the cause of the accident.
