I've started learning Swedish (2)

1 Name: Doctor Denis : 2010-05-23 18:21 ID:yARpy7dJ

Hello all,

I'm 21 years old, and I come from England. My mother knows a few different languages, and my sister and dad both know some German. But myself, I've never gotten into language stuff, until recently, I decided to learn Swedish.

For the past 7 or so years I've been friends with a guy from Sweden, and he's exposed me to a lot of Swedish music and stuff. He'd also invite his other Swedish friends to chats. At first they'd speak English so I could join in, but they'd eventually end up speaking in Swedish, and sometimes I'd look words up in a Swe-Eng dictionary to try to work out what they were saying.

I picked up 'Teach yourself Swedish', downloaded some films, looked up words in the dictionary, and etc.
I also managed to get hold of the Swedish audiobook of 'Harry Potter och de vises sten'. I've tried reading the English text while listening to the Swedish audio. At some point I'll try to get hold of the Swedish text as well.

My goal is to be able to watch and understand Swedish TV programmes, Swedish texts, and Swedish speech. Being able to join in Swedish conversations online with my associates in Sweden would be the ultimate realization of my dream.

Post too long. Click to view the whole post or the thread page.

Dansker i 4ch? (3)

Hej dansker :3

I've just started learning Danish a few weeks ago, and I've made a tiny bit of progress in learning new sentences, phrases, and structures, etc; like "jeg er...", "jeg i..", "ikke...", etc.

Does anybody know of any ways to further my ability in Danish?

Tak!

Nordic = Scandinavia (including Finland and Iceland)

These are Germanic languages (like English), with the exception of Finnish of course. (which is not related at all) (and neither is Russian)

7 Name: Viking Gone East : 2010-02-10 21:15 ID:pxyVQ/ll

Allow me to sort this out:

The Nordic languages include Norweigian, Swedish, Danish, Faroese and Icelandic. Those are all germanic languages. (indoeuropean family)

If you want to include Finnish, which belongs to the altaic language family (not the indoeuropean family), You would probably have to say scandinavic languages. (Maybe you'll have to include estonian in this case).

Russian is neither a nordic or scandinavic language but a slavic language (which still belongs to the indoeuropean language falimy).

So Russian is more closely related to Swedish, Norweigian, Danish, Faroese and Icelandic (all being indoeuropean languages) than to Finnish, but is still not a Scandinavian language though Finnish is.

I've created this board, partly because of my own interest, and also because over the past few years I've had various people ask me for something like this.
Default Anonymous names: I'm not quite sure what to set this to, something that isn't just "Anonymous" in English but can be understood by everyone would be great.
Board Rules Translation: Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian and Swedish translations of the very short rules would be nice, please.

Finland is Nordic in culture, but not in language. Linguistically, Finnish is an anomaly. It has more in common with Hungarian and other Ugrian languages.

My rant in Norwegian(new norwegian infact) (13)

1 Name: Anonymous Linguist : 2006-03-19 00:57 ID:D0vJ8UTP
