School (15)

Ok, so right now, I go to a School in North Carolina with a decent reputation, a cutting edge technology program, and a well-rounded curriculum. The thing is, its a fundie-Christian school. Every student there is racist towards blacks, and 95% hate homosexuals. I'm not a Christian; I'm simply going because my parents have placed me here, but I've grown sick of it. People have figured out that I'm not a Christian, and that my values and ideals AREN'T bullshit, and that I'm more than willing to back my beliefs up with facts and evidence. Whadda ya know? People hate that. So now school is getting more and more difficult for me, as I'm pretty much excluded from anything social now, and have everyone taking every chance they can to fuck me over. I'm sick of this. So at the end of this year, I'm considering doing whatever it takes to get me out of this school - this is going to put me in the public school I was zoned for originally. What do you think, /personal/? Should I go for the public school, or just stick it out another year at the school I'm at now?

tl;dr version: i'm stuck at a fundie school with assholes who hate me. should i just go to public school instead?

It depends, are you taking advantage of the technology program, is that what you want to do in the future?? Or could you get by on the normal programs at public school.

Do you have friends outside of school, do the social thing isnt that big??

Is there another private school you could go to??

Ok. By Technology program, I mean we do all our work on laptops. All notes are taken on laptops, all work is turned in on a server... Everything is automated. My future plans somewhat revolve around the medical field, so I can't see too much of a loss coming from the lack of computers.

As for the social thing, I normally wouldn't say its that big of an issue, but about 40% of the student body wants me gone, so you can imagine that it's not too pleasant in that regard.

Oh, so you actually want to socialise. OK. What are the people doing to fuck you over, exactly?

Er... I am not qualified to give advice. Heh. Join the atheist society, perhaps? Or convert to Islam, that'll really piss them off! Oh wait that's not the point. Covert to Christianity, perhaps? Might be a tad hard if you don't, y'know, believe it. Perhaps chat to people and show them you're not such a bad guy?

Well the current way to fuck me over would be vandalizing the school, then tagging my name underneath. Repeatedly.

Your advice is good, but sadly I doubt it would work in this situation; most high schoolers decide not to listen to reason, especially the ones at a southern Christian school. No matter how much I try to convince people I'm not evil, the conversations ultimately boil down to "wtf atheist hax gtfo my school."

Wtf they break shit at the school and write your name on the wall?
lol christians. It's like burning churches and writing JEWS/ATHEISTS/XENU DID THIS in the ashes.

Anyway, I suggest that you find the other "oppressed" and create an alliance. Start with the library and search for people who read ANYTHING else than a book with biblical content.

>>7 Why don't you just ask to be switched to another private school, it sounds weird, but Catholic schools are usually more low key. You'll still have to attent religion classes, but there are more people with different beliefs there. For exemple, I know of someone who is Jewish going to a catholic school.

Transfer. Especially if you're looking into going to a professional school. Specifically, transfer to a public school or a private, unaffiliated institution.

Is the school that you're at right now accredited?

I presently attend a large, public university and really enjoy it. One of my friends comes from a strict, Baptist family that sent all their kids (except her) to a small, private, religious (and unaccredited) school. Now her brother-in-law is unable to get into law school because his degree is "about as meaningful as a degree from Schlotzsky's Deli."

It sounds like you're going around trying to convert them or something. Here's an idea: make an effort to respect others' beliefs.

I fail to see how he's trying to "convert" anybody. How is wanting to make his school life LESS miserable not "respecting others' beliefs?"

My advice for >>1 is to transfer, either to another private school (if another school of equal quality exists in your area), or just to a public school. Even in the medical field, attending a public school won't hurt your chances of getting into a good university, as long as your grades are good and stuff. Good luck!

Which part NC do you live? I went to public school in NC and the quality of schools can vary wildly from school to school. But my best recommendation is to apply to the North Carolina School of Science and Math. If you graduate from there free tuition to any public university in North Carolina.
